I want to say since first hearing about SSL in JAN 04 Ive never seen a better time to be a DJ. This by far one of the best products that has come along in a while. Theres so much potential in this product that im trully amazed with excitement.
But heres my wishlist for a future upgrade. I would like SSL to be either a REWIRE,VST/AUDIO UNITS,rtas PLUGIN and etc. application an still work as a standalone application. This would be well worth the price of a serious upgrade in the future. So far I havent figured out how to record to a DAW application such LOGIC or Cubase for editing or sequencing. This by far would let a DJ compose there own mixes or music track with greater ease. That sure would be nice to do sometime. I know other people are putting this wish high on there list.
Being able to resize the screen would be nice since you dont always have to see the screen when your mixing or scratching. As long as i can hear what Im doing through the headphone. I can pull the screen open again an select my next track. SSL is a fantastic program as a standalone but this could be a dream come true in the studio as well. Those are my suggestions for an upgrade.

I've recorded mixes back into the onboard on a pretty modest desktop, the application I used to record the output of the mixer was very basic and thus the processor kept up.
But that was with the express aim of recording a mix live and not editing it to any great degree. For studio scratching I would definitely wan't to keep it in the digital domain and thus Scratch Studio Edition would be the answer, for me.

Some questions about the SSE...
1. needl dropping, will that work in the future?
2. does SSE use the same control-signal records as SSL does?
3. Any chance to get a SSE version with reduced price if you own SSL?

1. no plans
2. no
3. This is a common one, we consider SE and LIVE two very distinct products aimed at different markets, and as such there are no plans to either bundle the two or offer crossgrades/existing user discounts.

Ok, scrap SSL as a plugin I now see this having limited use. Ive checked out SSE before but it looks far different from SSL in the way both programs work.
HMMM....only supporting RTAS on SSE? Does this relate to the issue of software piracy?
What I would like to see is SSL supporting REWIRE in the future. SSL being set up to work live with a dj setup REWIRE seem like the best choice to recording. REWIRE would enable SSL to patch into other software programs such as a sampler, sequencer, or multitrack. I think SSl would work best this way without resorting to a plugin by going this route to record.
Having SSL supporting REWIRE would be less of a need to clutter up the GUI with more features that would constantly be needed to support the recording of SSL. Thats become the problem with sequencers vs programs such as Traktor and Ableton Live with cleaner GUIs. SSL has a very clean GUI right now to navigate. Another program supporting REWIRE totally design for this, would far better handle all the recording and editing.

The trouble with taking the digital signal from Scratch LIVE is that it is pre-fader. Anything more than a baby scratch needs the "scratched" sound to be cut by a fader, which usually means going into the analogue domain.
If you just want to use Scratch LIVE as a controller for other apps then MTC is much more appropriate.

However, scratch live is not just a program for making scratching sounds. If you want to use it as a mixing tool, there are plenty of ways to crossfade two tracks in software. I can see the benefit of rewiring the audio out to another program, if you were creating a mix CD or whatever.

Im glad to hear from both moderators STEVE W and AJ.
Rane/SSL really couldnt benifit from using REWIRE as I liked, if you cant use the DJ mixer and cdj/turntables to mix n scratch. Using REWIRE in the INTERNAL MODE wouldnt benifit best here either without a some type of mixing features an it wouldnt be called SSL anymore. After hearing both comments I see the problem with recording analog into digital would come down to the DJ mixer itself.
Recently, I checked out WWW.SKRATCHWORX.COM an they have a story on the NUMARK DXM SCRATCH PRO MIXER supporting SPDIF. This is the only mixer IVE seen that can even convert A to D. This is a preview product that hasnt been officially annouced. This gives the idea of sending audio to a sound card an the program of my choice much easier. I dont know if this really solves much for me in the way I would like to record but it gives hope to the possibilities.
To really be able to record live from SSL the way I like would mean that analog to digital convertor would have to be built into DJ mixers in the future. That doesnt sound like an option anytime soon. Theres no possible way to keep 2 tracks separate once mixed and scratched together when being recorded. A new type of scratch mixer would have to be developed to send audio on its own separate track. The crossfader would automatically have to separate each channel once opened according to where the track was to be recorded.
If theres a SCRATCH DJ MIXER like this, I would like to check it out sometime. This would definitely help me use SSL in more ways in the studio and live settings.
