i have rock behind my real first name. it was just dj brett. i didn't think it sounded all that cool. people said i rocked because they like the music i play. it made sense. and besides you need to pick something descent that you wont mind getting stuck with for a long time. after a while some would ask me if that was my real last name. i said that it was. i still have yet to meet another brett rock so i still feel kind of un-cliched. but rock is a good name, a strong manly name. its b boy. short and to the point. its a classic hip hop suffix. i respect the roots of all this and im somewhat knowledgable about the past. i hope people would look at my name in the same way. i feel like a descendant from a long line of proud rocks throughout history.

its not unlike having the word "fresh" in your name. that one has definately shown up in more than one place. but i think thats kind of cool. i used to dj with a dude named "crickett" and theres a well known dj from the bronx who many call "Bam" for short. and hes been djing for quite some time. its just a name.

my gang is called the better beats bureau. weve had that name for about 5 years now. ive heard that theres others out there with the same name but i havent found them yet. someone from "the better breakbeat bureau"(i think better breakbeat bureau sounds a bit silly) contacted my homey to make sure we werent biting. he assured this fellow that we were not.

taking on part of classic name is akin to fat laces and having your name on your jacket and such. i think that style is dope and should be kept alive.

who out there is just so original that they are completely unprecidented? we play other peoples music(mostly), on equipment others invented using methods that have been here for decades. so what?

will the guy who invented djing please stand up and point his finger at all of us and talk about how cliched all of this is?
George Tunee 5:41 AM - 10 January, 2007
all of this is so cliched
Dj Shamann 5:50 AM - 10 January, 2007
LOL not to throw salt in the wounds or anything Anthony but what Dj Ryme said was pretty much my initial reaction. Even if it wasn't "gay" sounding it's just too much to say. Dj Names have to flow, especially if you're gonna throw the "Dj" in front of it. Think about it from a mic mans prespective....Personally I like to drop the fader every now and then and throw whoevers name I'm mic'in for into the lyrics, how would I do that with Viewtiful Anthony?

Anyway it's no attack, just food for thought.

thanks for the explanation but it's not really necessary - you do you. i hope you didn't take my post as a diss or as impetus for having to explain why your name is what it is. i just happen to see alot of 'Rock's. and 'Fresh' too!

the way i see it, true skills > everything else. we just create the "dj handle" so that people can make connections between us and our skills. "oh, dj so and so, he's nice!"

yes, our names have meaning and whatnot but there are some DJs out there that have not-so-creative names but are still recognized b/c of their skills/accomplishments (DJ P and DJ AM come to mind).

Thundercat 2:49 AM - 11 January, 2007
My DJ name was my graf tag before I ever used it for spinning. I had breakdancing names, dj names & a graf name. The graf name stuck as I also put it on every piece, every jacket, every shirt, every pair of kicks & every pair of Lee twills I painted for myself or other people. The timeline was something like this:

'82 - Chilly J (first breakin' crew)
'83 - Kid Elite (2nd breakin' crew)
'84 - DJ Jinx / Psycho (breakin' crew / break dance instructor @ a studio)
'85 - DJ Jinx / DazZ (taggin', writing & painting)
'86 to present DJ DazZ or just plain DazZ

Thundercat? That's strictly an internet thing.

IMHO your DJ name should be one you earn... not just come up with yourself.... You peers (other DJ's and non DJ friends) start calling your something.. thats your DJ name.... I used to just go by DJ Chris (real name) DJCD (my first 2 initials) and DJ Dep Dog (my friends used to call my deputy dog b/c i used to work security as a full time just b4 i start djing full time)... But what finaly stuck is alot of my friends started calling me DJ Disturbed b/c i used to DJ alot of Biker parties (of the harly davidson kinda bikers) and played alot of Rock in my sets.. and now most peeps even just refer to me as "disturbed".... thats an earned name.....

Roy G Biv is a very cool guy. Didn't he have a dude in his crew that went by Monochrome?

A-Blur is solid if I remember correctly, and I think DJ AC is married to a good friend of my old neighbor. Small world, eh?

I used to go by DJ Doyen, but spinning progressive house its more common to simply go by your real name, so now I only use that name for playing hip hop.
