DJ Equipment in the BASMENT or the LIVINGROOM! Me vs. The Wife...

DJJOHNNYM_vSL3 4:17 PM - 9 May, 2010
So, I've been slowly dropping hints that I need to bring some DJ equipment out of the basement into an area that I frequent more, so I can do more vinyl rips....

I spend more time in the Living Room vs. the basement, where the equipment is now located...

I need y'all to help me convince her that it's NOT TOO MUCH equipment....

Here are some pics....

A subwoofer or 2 --- >>> www.djjohnnym.com

Another sub (or 2) to give it some height --->> www.djjohnnym.com

A mid, for some, you know, clarity... -->> www.djjohnnym.com

And a teenie, weenie, tweeter.... -- >> www.djjohnnym.com

All in all it would look like this put together -->> www.djjohnnym.com

Sideview ---->>> www.djjohnnym.com

I personally think it would add to the "decor"! MOST of it is carpeted!

Then I tried to slide these 2 puppies in... -->>> www.djjohnnym.com...

And she had a fit.... :-(

I'm sayin, she says this looks like a reggae stack or some mess -->> www.djjohnnym.com.

Sideview --->>> www.djjohnnym.com

I disagree!

This setup can double as a wall unit! You can put pictures in the subwoofer compartments and everything.

I don't understand what the problem is....

So how many of your wives/girlfriends/significant others would have a problem with a little extra bass in the living room?

Thoughts?
AMF 4:27 PM - 9 May, 2010

ZESH! 5:20 PM - 9 May, 2010
Johnny...You're nuts.

You know for a fact that's too much (and very harsh) for a LIVING ROOM. Hell, that too much for most bars and small clubs!
You pointed out that you want you equipment up there to rip vinyl. Well, you don't need your SUBS LoL!

My suggestion would be to compromise and have a table with your Turntable, mixer, and a pair of decent LOOKING monitors

Funny thing is by the look of your post...you already know the answer. Because if you read it yourself, it does sound kinda ridiculous

So...now that you're done showing off your equipment, tell the wife how everybody here thinks you've got a ground wire loose in there somewhere heheheh
RogerRabbit 5:22 PM - 9 May, 2010
You damm sure aint going to put that in no living room...everything will fall from the shelves of all the neighbors houses :)
dj_soo 6:13 PM - 9 May, 2010
the fact that you claim you need all that to rip vinyl leads me to believe that this is just a roundabout way to show off your gear.

it looks cool like a reggae dj setup, but I've learned that mixing different sub designs is a big no no.

DJ Kidd Insomnia 11:55 AM - 10 May, 2010
Next all you need is a light show and some uplighting and you can club out the room.....lol. In all seriousness be happy that your wife let you put anything in your house. For me, it was a fight just to put a small set up in an extra room that we were not even using.
Maskrider 12:26 PM - 10 May, 2010
Sell it and buy new compact speakers.
lumas13 12:44 PM - 10 May, 2010
When me and my wife first moved in together, I told her this: "You can fix this place however you see fit, but I will have a corner for my turntables" Now as far as the speakers goes, they're in the basement, plus 90% of my vinyl is upstairs.

lol...

Some of y'all got JOKES!

Anyway...

The system used to revolved around these babies... --->>> www.djjohnnym.com

For those that don't know, those are 2 Peavy CS-800's. The ORIGINAL WORKHORSE for all professional DJ's!

Now, you don't use them in regular STEREO MODE, nawww, you bridge EACH of those suckers, and you get 800 Watts RMS of PURE CLEAN SOUND. Well, it was moreso 700 Watts RMS with the Built In Limiter, I would NEVER have to worry about a "New Jack" DJ on the MASTER VOLUME of my rig, blowin up anything....

Then I added the 2 QSC 1500a's seen here ----> www.djjohnnym.com.

I'd run BOTH of these ALSO Bridged, which would give me 1500 Watts in to 4 Ohms.

So, I could basically eliminate the Peavy's and run 2 subs PER AMP, each speaker getting 750 Watts (1500/2). And that make the rack a WHOLE lot easier to carry.

Then of course, you had the RANE AC23 Crossover, which has never failed.

And a Furman PL-Pro, to make pretty lights...lol

Next up was my "Processor Rack" ---->> www.djjohnnym.com.

The heart of this baby is the Soundcraftsman DX-4200 PreAMP. Now, let me tell you a little bit about sound.

Most DJ's run out of their mixer into the crossover, into the amps....WRONG.

The BEST way to amplify your sound is to keep it CLEAN coming out of the mixer, and to feed it into some type of Preamp, (or Mixing Board), for the BEST type of sound.

A lot of cats don't know that....

I added a compressor for "Guest" DJ's, and a BBE for the pretty lights....lol

A beautifully lit rack was VERY INTIMIDATING to those on the come up....

The Furman VU meters are the most important parts of the system, as they warn me that I'm about to spend some money to get speakers reconed if I DON'T TURN IT DOWN!

When you're rocking LOUD sound for a LONG time, your ears grow tired, and you might keep turning it UP and UP, but those meters let you know when you're about to get out of your league...werd up.

Then I have ANOTHER QSC 1500a to run the MIDS, and it has it's own VU meters as well.

Then I have a Crown PowerBase 1 to run my tweeters......more than enough headroom.

I usually just use this setup here.... --->>> www.djjohnnym.com BUT I have to INVERT the signal Junior Earthquakes so the bass stays in phase.

If I need to rock out everything, I'll put the scoops on one side, and the Junior Earthquakes on another side....

Thanks man.

Cats wondering why I haven't UPGRADED, and basically, ONLY RECENTLY has the Powered Speaker market put out anything comparable to what I would lug around for a big function.

Now for a small function, 2 -35's do the job. They're heavy enough to give me the Bass I want, rolls on wheels, and sounds great behind a QSC 1500a.

And that was my cutoff. If a party was "too small" for the V35's, I wouldn't do it....Feel me?

Having all those speakers and amps was great experience when it came to learning about LIve Sound too...

No, The MOB stands for Members Of The Board...

That was the acronym I came up with, because in order to take over Rutgers, we actually had a "Mole" join one of the college entertainment clubs, and get on the planning board. So, when it came time to choose a DJ, they would always put us down, but they were actually a member of our group.

We learned the polictics FAST....And at times, REALLY worked like "The MOB", as far as intimidation, kickbacks, and getting chicks, was concerned.

"Members Of The Board" is stil used whenever I need to do Corporate Friendly functions, and everything else in between.

Oh, I hear you LOUD AND CLEAR, thus the reason for me phasing the Peavy's out, and using the 2 QSC 1500a's. Bridged, that's 1500 Watts apiece, thus 3000 Watts of JUST BASS.

So it's 2 QSC's x 1500 Watts for = 3,000 Watts of Bass Total
1 QSC for Mids = 350 Watts of Mids (really use about 250) = 500 Watts Total for Mids
1 Crown Power Base 1 = 200 Watts (really use about 100) = 200 Total for Highs

Grand Total 3,700 Watts of sound, and that was the standard setup.

Adding the Peavy's just made it ridiculous.

For small functions, it's the V35's and 1 QSC = 350 x 2 = 700 Watts total.

So you see how it's hard to go to Powered Setups from something like this...

limiter/compressor/xover/time diff./eq

and for live music it sends out this pink noise which the vocal and instrmt mics pick up and autmoatically adjusts settings for the speakers. (eq, xover, etc.) im not really too familiar with this, tried it once, but never really mastered it.

basically its a whole rack in one piece of equipment. its dope.

autosync like, the pink noise for band applications? so it prevents feedback and stuff? i don't get it.

I was just breakin balls. hehe
agentorange 6:29 PM - 12 May, 2010

i would never. lol
agentorange 6:30 PM - 12 May, 2010
especially if u switching thru like 5-6 bands a night.
agentorange 6:32 PM - 12 May, 2010
the pink noise allows the driverack to detect any possible feedback issues and smarts the acoustics of the room.

i seen a couple of sound guys use it, btw. they got this crazy little mic for it. i don't think it's auto-sync. i never heard of this term.....

You need to use/purchase the reference mic in order to get it to auto-program it for whatever room you're in. Most of us usually just do it by ear, but it pretty much consolidates a bunch of different things you have in a typical rack in one device.

DJ DisGrace 4:46 PM - 13 May, 2010
Drive Rack is dope b/c it is all digital. No limits on xover slopes. No inverted phase on EQ adjustments. You can correct phasing at your crossover points. etc, etc...

you still need to know what ur doing though. The complicated stuff isn't done on the auto-setup process..... but when used properly, it will crush any analog EQ, crossover, or compressor.

A good dj on serato (who knows how to use all the features properly) will crush a good dj still on wax. That's the comparison.

I don't like that reference, because it should be natural that a DJ on Serato vs. a DJ on Wax where both DJ's have equal skills, the Serato DJ should be able to do "Better" (and that's relative depending on what you consider better), than the DJ on Wax.

That SHOULD be the natural order, since there are more tools that the Serato DJ can work with, thus it should be expected.

IF on the other hand, the WAX DJ outperforms the Serato DJ, then the Serato DJ's skills just aren't up to par.

johnny, do you still gig out with all that stuff?

If it's a large party, I bring 4 subs, 2 mids, and 2 highs.

That's not a lot of equipment to me.

and what is "a large party" to you

I already had all my music on wax, but still bought serato ;) just bustin ur balls (nH) now, but yes, it's tough to justify buying all new gear when u already have the tools. That Rane xover is the bomb - don't ever sell that!

weight and size is definitely the upside of pro audio gear technology. With compact digital mixers like the LS9, compact powered line arrays like the JBL VRX line, you can literally do concert sound out of a cargo van (to a point of course). In the past you would need stacks of speakers, stacks of amps, stacks of processing, etc.... The new stuff is lighter, higher power, and sounds great!

To me, it seems that the Powered Subs are generally the same physical size as the Passive ones, and I've never been crazy about a 2 Way system in a cabinet to bring out the Mids/Highs, or I would Bi-Amp the cabinet...

So I figure, if I'm going to Bi-Amp, I might as well have individual cabinets and let each do it's job to the fullest.

The issue I AM having however, is that TODAY'S HipHop has lows and highs that are digitally reproduced, which create a different output for the speakers, so I am constantly adjusting each song to match a previously Analog sounding system.

So, the Digital Aspect of the DBX is what has my interests peaked.

All I need is 2 other cats, most times, just one.

Like I said, the 4 bins are on wheels, and so is the rack.

A handtruck for the mids and highs, but I DON'T DO STAIRS....
