11 years.
2 belt drive Numark turntables: I actually taught myself to scratch pretty decent on those things. By the time I actually got some motor driven tables I was like "damn this shit is so much easier!"

Gemini PMX 7 mixer. Always had to spay WD 40 in the crossfader because it would crackle and bleed so much.

I also had a tabletop Gemini CD player. I would click to phono/line back and forth from vinyl to CD because I didn't have enough vinyl to go all night. I would do my college house parties with all that crap. But im glad I learned the way I did. Taught me how use my ears. Taught me about song structure and bars and all that stuff. Carrying crates built up my back and arm muscles.

Crazy memories. DJing is like a whole other world now. Much easier.

18 years or so. i still have and use the original techs that i first bought off the homie back in the day who had originally bought them through a newspaper add from somebody selling off their whole system. i think they may be older (or at least as old as) me. also bought his old school 19" (no misquote) GLI mixer...if anyone remembers the old yo! mtv raps intro, it was the one that they showed with the faders magically moving up and down by themselves. had the needle peak meters. loved those things (meters).
DJ Bill Blast 2:42 PM - 5 May, 2010
I started in 1993 on 2 belt drivin Gemini's...And ended up MASTERING them!

Burned through at least 3 Scratchmaster mixers in 2 years..

& I had an old Radio Shack Realistic amp powering 2- 12" Cerwin Vega's

And I am a believer that if you start on crap turntables & get good on them, THEN move on to 1200's it makes a huge difference rather than just jumping on elite equipment from the gate.

Now I'm on 2- 1200's, I own a Rane-TTM56 & a TTM57 & running Serato!

Real answer:

Started in 1990 BUT I didn't consider myself a DJ until 1992. The first two years were very much for fun throwing house parties with 2 walk-mans and a radio shack mixer with no crossfader.

In 1992 is when I got my first pair of 1200's (MKII) which I still had until 3 weeks ago.

I went through numerous mixers but still had my trusty 1200's. I eventually had 3 sets of MKII's. However, after getting the M5G's 3 years ago, I was hooked on those tables. So, I sold all my MKII's and now I have two sets of M5G's and 57.... looking to get either another 57 or an updated 57.... whatever comes out first. And, I don't mean the current 57 which only has b-buttons updates.
dj_craigmac 2:39 PM - 6 May, 2010
Speaking of the 57. Sixxx u were absolutely correct about what u told me @ Mike Basics Jammy Jam when u said that if i took the time to get to know the 57 i would love it. I love my 57 now that i've set it up for my personal taste and know how to use it. I wish my clubs that i play would invest in a 57.
sixxx 2:46 PM - 6 May, 2010
Yeah man. I still know a few cats who have a 57 and don't use it to its full potential. It's a very nice mixer. I wish it had the sound quality of the sixty-eight though.

Nah. But, I know the SL3 sounds better than the 57 and the sixty-eight is better than the 57 so it's gotta sound better too.

my 1st numark mixer would bleed like a girl on her period but the m3 is just great for basic/intermediate scratching which is what i do anyways... once i get the cheese im gonna upgrade more likely to a pio but thats in the future of course... i really dont think numark is as bad as people say they are really... also most people who are buying their 1st equipment set up arent getting 3 gigs a month

while this might be true in a sense, but when ur 16 with none to help you out, 6-700 for ONE 1200 is stupid expensive... u buy cheap so u can upgrade later... which im still in the process of doing... haha

from what ive seen if your going to buy a used 57 you may as well just buy it new, alot of these big money mixers dont depreciate in value too much

ive been watching 57's on ebay and the lowest price ive been seeing them go for is like 1200....i can get that new in store on the right day

very true... ive looked around for mint pio mixers and used and new prices arent that different... and i dont count 150-300 bucks a big difference on a 1200 dollar mixer...

Question to the people who are beginners, is this your only form of income (djing)? If it is then you're right, you cant afford the new stuff. When I got my first set up, I was working at "THE GOOD GUYS" so I was able to make payments on my equipment. And again I was fortunate enough to get my stuff on credit. Once I started to book paying gigs, I was able to pay everything off faster. Never needed to upgrade because I had the good stuff already. I didn’t want to settle for less and if you're serious about this, you shouldn’t settle for less either. And if you cant buy new, buy used, but the good stuff.

And thats awsome in your situation that that worked for you in that way, but what you have to realise is everyones situation is different, especially now alot of people cant get approved for that credit and alot of people have other bills and responsbilities to take care of that make it not so reasonable to flop down a shit ton of money on new gear especailly when the current gear is working fine. Especially if you cant get approved for the credit to make payments on it

2 Fisher Turntables www.oaktreevintage.com

One Fisher reciever and one Sansui reciever. NO MIXER. We had each turntable hooked to a receiver. And had to turn the volume up and down like channel faders. My pops kicked the living shit outta me one day cuz he said I was ruining his stuff. Same thing happened to my boy, cuz he used to bring the other turntable and receiver to my crib.

I recently found this old photo and scanned it.

This was my first full DJ setup and the photo was taken sometime around 1989.

I see 2 plastic JVC turntables that cost me $99 each at Circuit City in 1986.
A 19" pyramid mixer.
2 Radio Shack Cassette Decks. 1 for playing and 1 for recording.
1 Radio Shack Microphone with Stand
1 Radio Shack mini keyboard.
1 home stereo amplifier (can't remember what brand, nor can I remember what's between the amp and the silver cassette deck.)

Not shown are my Koss Headphone that I customized by removing the right can and taping the foam back on and the large home stereo speakers.

Picture was taken at the Camp Las Pulgas baracks on Camp Pendleton.

First setup was 2 technics 1200s, Urei 1620. First PA was Peavy SP2s with CS800 amp.
First did video club in 1988 with Sony 3/4" decks.
Was spoiled by starting out DJing right in clubs with hgh end gear, never had a home setup before I started working in the clubs.

Been DJ'ing since 1978.

First setup? I didn't even HAVE equipment, I would borrow everybody elses until I got a set of 1200's in 1985.

At that point, I had the infamous Radio Shack Mixer - www.djjohnnym.com

2 - 12's

1 - Lafayette (Radio Shack) Amp - (which I took as colatteral when a dude didn't pay me the required amount for DJ'ing his party) - I still have it too...lol.

Some "Gauss" heavy azz speakers from back in the day...

I started doing that in a roller rink back in the early 90's. Tape decks...

Make a nickel and spent a dime for some good equipment as I went. And yes, I had the Behringer 700 mixer too for a while. Now it's just two 1200's and the TTM57.

I learned on a Bozak & 4 1200s in 1978 but............
My first set of my own was a Technics SLB10 (belt drive) & some Garrard Record player (no pitch) with a Clubman Meteor One-One in 1979.
I eventually got a second SLB10 but then 12s shortly after.
The Bozak I learned on eventually became mine, it worked until it just about detached its body from its faceplate, (and it still worked). Then I bought the first generation of Urei 1620 as soon as they came out in 1981.

my first set up was to belt drive jvc turntables with a dial type pitch (forget the model)
i used cut plastic grocery bags and table cloth napkins to make a make shift slip mat

the mixer was the same atus DJ GQ had in juice.

all this stuff was my pops second hand set up.

eventually when i got my weight up i got two gemini xl400, next the 500 and then the pt 2000

mixers where gemini 626, numark dm 1200 and last a tascam two channel x9

i started doing parties with two radio shack 15 3 way home stereo speakers my pops modded with ev woofers and crown horns.

so using all this second equipment made techs feel like cadilac once i got my first pair of 1200s after 11 years dj

s/o to gemini i dont care what anyone says they held up in a lot of tight situations and made me the dj i am today lol
Robert W 10:30 PM - 10 June, 2012
Back in 1999 i bought the $500 Gemini Scratch master box with 2 XL500 IIs and some cheap ass 2 channel, stiff cross fader.
Then upgraded to some straight tone arm Vestax (forget what model they were) in 2001.

Now i got the 1200 Mk2s and a Numark Pro SM3 mixer that i bought back in 2003, which Still works
as good as it did back then. I love the fact i havent had to upgrade my mixer in almost 10 years.
Robert W 10:36 PM - 10 June, 2012
Also went through a couple other gemini mixers and a berhinger mixer in my 1st few years too. I always liked having 3 channel mixers as opposed to 2 channels. I had a CDJ800 for a while too until my dumbass left a window open during a really bad storm and my CDJ got wet and shorted out :(
DJ Reflex 6:20 AM - 16 June, 2012
My brother dropped my Peavey 8.5 C amplifier down a flight of stairs right before a gig. Thing was beat up, but pounded the whole night. It's been 15 years and the thing is still rockin'. I now use powered speakers, but pull out the Peavey for live sound gigs about 3-4 times/year.
Alex B. 9:21 PM - 18 June, 2012
Ahh I remember it vividly. My parents house was party central back in the day, and guess who was the DJ! Pops had this jukebox with a turntable, tape deck and strobes on the front panel that pulsed to the beat, (that was my light show lol) and a small turntable receiver combo no mixer! with some BS house speakers! I use to scratch the hell out of Kurtis Blow AJ Scratch! I couldn't afford any real gear, fast forward to about 5 years ago, I got back into it starting with controllers, small Hercules joint, and worked backwards. I've done everything from Final Scratch, to CdJs, iPod mixers, you name it. Present day, I have 1200 mk2s, Pioneer CdJ 800s, VCI 300, always searching for more ish to by. Got a Rane mixer and a 909 in my sights as well as a Pioneer ddjs1 or Vestax VCI 380! It nevers stops for me!

I think I had the same JVC tables.

darkfade 7:04 PM - 19 June, 2012
7 years

[1st setup]
Deck: some random Sony Turntable/Tape Deck/Receiver type encased in a wood looking finish from a garage sale
Mixer: The Mighty Optimus SSM-1250

I just scratched and nothing else, used the line/phono switch since the crossfader was as smooth as quicksand. After obliterating a funky cold medina record, i moved onto a beatie boys 45" fight for your right single. Eventually the belt drive took a dive, along with the switch.

[2nd Setup]
Deck(s): Stanton STR8-30b
Mixer: Numark DXM06

I got two videos on my youtube of this setup, since the needles were factory, i did the tape some change to the cartridge and watch your records turn into grooves of static. As time went on, the table would lose torque about 5 minutes in and then as all good things come to an end, the platter would no longer even spin. (almost like sad poem.. lol.)

[Current Setup]
Deck(s): Numark TT200 / Denon DN-S3500 / Numark Mixtrack PRO / Numark DJ2GO
Mixer: Numark DXM06 / Vestax PMC-06 Pro A

Attempting to get well versed in all equipment types.

Jiglo 4:26 PM - 21 June, 2012
Late 1991 (early 91 if I include a belt driven Technics deck 'BD......' with rotating + - 6% pitch control + hifi deck and no idea). I've been collecting hip hop/electro/funk since 82, before collecting house/techno as well late 87 when it really started making big noises here in the UK, then got into hardcore and breakbeats, DnB. I still play out breakbeats, funk, hip hop, electro, nu funk, DnB, in fact music with a breakbeat.

I started out with:

2 x MKII Technics 1210's - including Stanton 500AL carts. They cost me £400 each, which was a lot of money back then.
Radioshack mixer (with left and right fader for each channel) that I got from my brother for free. Upgraded a few years later to a Vestax PMC 15SL at a cost of £650. Everything was really expensive back then compared to our wages. Records cost around £4 and imports were £6-7

I used to spend all my spare time practicing (up to 10/12hrs a day some days) beat matching and scratching before I thought I was good enough to start making mixtapes for friends. I really wish i'd kept copies of all those early mixes as I was really proud of some of them and there's very few old mixes remaining now.

It used to be very expensive to get set up with all the gear and buy the latest tunes on vinyl, so only the most committed did it, and now, well it's never been cheaper to get into DJing.
DJ Crookedstylez 5:05 PM - 21 June, 2012
I've been Djing on and off for 8 years now. My first set up was the ion turntables with mixer. It cost me 300 dollars. and I was 5.25/hr at a fast food joint!!
Al B Bach 10:19 PM - 23 June, 2012
I started when I was 19 and I am about to turn 36.
I got a couple 1200 Mk3's DIRT cheap from a young entrepreneur, sadly in hindsight someone was probably coincidentally missing a set of them. :-(

I had the 50$ Radio Shack mixer which I still own and works fine

and I practiced for hours and hours running it through my old guitar amp!

eventually when I thought I was ready and did a little auditioning I started buys some cheap Yorkville sound components.

I wish I had never sold my decks though I really miss them. I recently got one of those extremely cheap DJ2GO things... not bad for a wedding or playing in the house but not what I would ever dream of taking to a real gig EVER!!!!
Logisticalstyles 2:03 PM - 25 June, 2012
I found some early '90s pictures of me DJing. Not my first set up, but here are a few pics.

This was my first wedding. It was for my cousins. I think I charged them 75.00. The turntables were Technics belt drive BD10s, and the mixer was a pyramid 19" rack mount with the sound effects. I had a Technics CD player and a tape deck.
www.flickr.com

Still using BS equipment, I think I was 18 in this pic. Notice the skinny ass mic.
www.flickr.com

A couple of years later I finally got some 1200's, but was still using a crappy MTX 19' mixer.

I got started in '93 when I worked at a roller rink. Had two tape decks and two mismatched record players. I had to change the belt settings to get speed control manually. Oh yeah... the Radio Shack mixer!

34 Years,
Started in 1978 with a Garrard Hifi record player with no pitch and a Technics SL-B10 with a Clubman 1-1 mixer. Eventually got a second B-10. Then got 2 Technics 1200s original marks with a used Bozak CMA.
Then got 2 Technics MK-IIs and a Urei 1620 in 1981. Been evolving ever since

Ooh, look at you all 'high-roller' with your GM50.

Just a lowly GM25 over here!

RIP the Soundlab DLP-1 decks though. I'm pouring some out for my dead belt-drive homies... Obviously I don't actually miss them, but, y'know... Good times.

I have been DJing for 14 years (since March 1998).

My first setup was:

2 x Technics 1210mk2
Intimidation Apex Mixer

In subsequent years I still have the same set of Technics, but have gradually upgraded my mixers:

Vestax 05-Pro II
Allen & Heath Xone:02
Rane TTM-56

Mixers are like a good (or bad) pair of sneakers. I change every few years. But I'm on the 57 train and don't foresee changing unless I can get up $1500 for a 62

Casually for ~6 years
- Gemini PT2000's with Stanton 500 ALII's
- Gemini PS-626PRO
Robejz 11:54 AM - 12 October, 2012
I also started with the Soundlabs back in '96.

A couple of years after that I got my 1210mkII's (that I still use) and a Gemini PS626. Crossfader kept bleeding, so I always had to tape a match stick to it to stop the fader reaching the end!

I now use a DJM909 and a DJM700 as back-up and for video use.

about 20 years

first setup -
sony 5 disc cd changer
pioneer twin tray cd player
pioneer belt drive record player
hooked up to a pioneer stereo receiver with a set of shitty speakers.

played a bunch gigs with that - NO beatmixing on that badass setup - I learnt the power of track selection - even with a second of silence between every song I was able to keep a dance floor.

second setup
gemini mixer - woohoo
gemini dual cd player
- - still used the pioneer receiver as amp with my shitty speakers and had my turntable in the mix.

eventually saved up for a numark TT and a decent used amp and speakers.

It was 3/4 years later till I finally had enough to buy a pair or 1200's ( actually bought 1 at a time almost a year apart) that was about 1995/1996 - and I still am using those 1200's :D
Jairen 3:58 PM - 12 October, 2012
Started in 93.

1 Technics SL1200 - the most beat up 1200 you will ever see.
1 Radio Shack mixer
1 Technics SL 1400MK2 (let's see who remembers that one...)
1 Bad ass boom box for tracks I couldn't find on vinyl.
Carpeted home speakers to look like real "DJ" speakers with added Radio Shack grills. :)
1 Helicopter light.
DJ Reflex 2:39 AM - 15 October, 2012
I had a GEMSound dual CD player when they first came out. It had joy sticks on it for looping (not seemless though - you had to time it just right to get a good loop going). The thing kept over heating and would crap out in the middle of a gig. I had to have a discman handy just in case.
DJ Reflex 2:39 AM - 15 October, 2012
Oh yeah...

+1 on the Radio Shack mixer!

Started messing around when I was about 12, so nearly 10 years now. Although until I was about 16-17 it was purely just crossfading.

My dad DJed so we had gear around.
The first set I remember the model number of was these:
www.adjaudio.com
And the matching 19" AmericanDJ mixer.

Eventually ended up with a set of American Audio pro scratch 2s- they were never anything but problems. Effects would jam on, lasers died routinely. I actually got them repaired one last time and sold them about 3 years ago got $420 for both in a coffin with a 3ch mixer.

Pretty much from there, two stanton turntables and a mackie mixer (soon to be replaced with a Rane 61/62)
DJ Laurex 9:59 PM - 23 October, 2012
Started in 1992 with 2 buddies with 2 Gemini turntables, gemini mixer,eq,gemini amp and 2 gem sound full range speakers,
upgraded to Technics1200 mid 90s and built a wall with 2 wbenz for bass + midrange and 20 tweeter box,(heavy as hell)
part ways with my partners in 2001 and downsized to Numark CDN25 and smaller wall with15inch Gemsound subs and Gem sound full range tops using QSC for amps,
now I have a full Yorkville setup including the LS801P with 2 Denon3700s and SL3 with Allen & Heath mixer.I also have a Pioneer DDJ-S1 controller. Not trying to show off but its just that I came a looonnnggg way and most of my stuff was purchased with DJ money.

Dude - I had almost the same CD player from American DJ. It was either the model above or below and only had 6 hot cues. Anyway, I loved that thing until Serato came out. I did one gig with Scratch Live 1.1 and I sold the CD player on eBay the next week.
djransom 9:15 PM - 20 July, 2014
I started in 99 and my first setup was a Numark DJ in a box setup w/ belt drive tables and mixer. It got the job done for a short while. I then moved to CDJ 800s w/ a Pio DJM 500. I ended up trading the CDJs for a set of 1200s w/ a buddy.

I started in Germany in 1977-1978 time frame, while in High School. My dad was assigned there in the Army. The nearest HS was in Frankfort Germany, two hours away, so I lived in the dorm and Djed HS dances and local community dances when I was back home.

My system consisted of the following:

Rane Mixer

Pioneer Spec 1 & 2 amps and preamps (4 amps) tremendous power and headroom for the day

Pioneer SG EQ

Pair of Tech's turntables

Eight JBL 4311 studio monitors

Later while in the Army I Djed again mid to late 1980's in Germany with the following equipment

Numark Mixer

Numark Turntables

Pioneer CD Players

Four Soundcraftsman A5002 Amps

DBX Crossover

DBX EQ

Four Cerwin Vega V series 15" three way tops

Four Cerwin Vega V series subs
