I am in San Diego, and I listen to Hot97 mixshows all the time. Love it especially the time diff. I get to work at 830a, and I am jamming by 11 to the new at 2 and then a 1pm my time again.

Power, no wack station period. Clear channel has no balls anyway! But def I F___ wit Camilo, Kast, Flex of course, but CAMILO, nice mix game.

I notice the trend were DJs don't mix anymore, just smash records in. Camilo does it too but mostly mixing is taking place.

Big Ben, Kast One, Camilo = the future of HOT 97 the rest of the mixers need to retire already they are sloppy, uncreative, and should be phased out.

Power is not really whack - there just a younger station that hot 97. And I know lots of people who prefer power over 97. It's just that 97 still got that hardcore legendary status on the streets....

Power 105 have some good DJ's like Self, Suss One, and Prostyle. It's just that Hot has the veteran DJ's that people have been accustomed too for years. But like somebody pointed out, Kast One, Bobby Trends, Camilo, Big Ben are the new younger generation at Hot. Actually Hot is recruiting new young DJ's. If you ever get a chance to listen to Flex, every thursday he has a guest DJ come up and show their skills for a half an hour. So the recruiting process has already started.

Also, if you pay attention, Power 105 as a whole is more geared towards a female audience. The reason being the majority of their playlist is R&B. That's why a lot of women I know listen to Power over Hot. Hot 97, on the other hand, plays more Hip Hip. Plus a lot more local talent get burn on their via people like Kay Slay. It's normal to hear an artist like Joel Ortiz, Vado (Cam'ron's new artist), Red Cafe, Maino, Freck Billionaire, etc on Hot 97 on the regular. The only time you hear those artists on Power is during their mixshows.

back in the day power in cali was the shit... we had dj vice here on power until he got bigger and better things to do... now hes just a guest dj on power nowadays on ocassion... how do formats vary or differ?

Cali radio, is a entire diff story. Def don't have balls and no identity. West coast radio doesn't even play the coast own music on the stations. (I am here in San Diego and uhhh, radio here makes me want to puke. Instead I listen to talk, how sad is that?)

Take KVEGAS in LV, they at least dedicated WEDS for Westcoast and Mix all West Coast old school at noon and Current WC music during Weds evening.

Well said. Power 106 plays tons of uptempo that Hot 97 will never touch. I also noticed Power 106 will stick the format playlist even during the many mixshows they have. Reflex goes left with it a bit - but overall they always play the normal rotation songs within a mixshow even if they are 30 minutes apart from each other. (I heard B.o.B 4-6 times within 1 hour)

Hot 97 does the same in a way - but the DJs have more freedom (not much) to take it somewhere else. Alot of New York hiphop (Joell Ortiz, Maino, Red Cafe, Fab etc.) mixed with some regional hits - While Power 106 is (LMAFO, Lil Jon, New Boyz etc.)

The cutting and scratching Power 106 mixers do on-air is 100x better than any DJ on Hot 97 has done in all its history though.

Yonny is very talented - kid can cut and appears to have that Spinbad style with the effects on the 909. He is now with 92.3 now and plays on Fridays. The other DJs on that station suck though - trainwreck city.

btw.. Kast one is humble homie. hes dope.. even tho he might not mix on air, he can mix live and do chases n rock doubles.

I've been to LA a few times and to compare/contrast, Hot 97 DJ's have way more freedom on their mixshows. I agree that the DJ's on Power 106 show their skills more but they hardly break any new artists from their region. They stick to the top 40/up tempo tracks. Atleast Hot 97 DJ's play new artists from the area, plus exclusive joints, freestyles, etc. The times I heard the mixshows on Power, I ain't hear none of that. Also wasn't there people organizing protests against Power for not supporting local artists? Hot 97 is far from perfect, and I barely listen to it during the day but their mixshows are still about somethin.

Well you have to understand the companies that own these stations.

Hot97 = Emmis Communications (heritage urban radio owners)

Power 106 = Clear Channel Communication (More coorporate radio owners, this station is chemisted by VP of Urban Programming, Doc Wynter this station is his baby! Also, this station sounds def similar to all the other urban stations that he programs throught the country. For example the voice of most of the urban station is Dr Dave the voice of most of CC stations in that format.

YES - Cocoa has the illest right hand scratch on Hot 97 but that does not make her the best. The energy, track selection, and mixing is subpar.

Dosent mean anything in my world. I don't like his constant yelling on the mic and his mixes are sloppy. I'll admit he has a cool drop though - "ssshake the block" but thats about it.

Honestly from a Djs point of view, Im not impressed by the Djs on hot97. Sloppy slam mixing and drops in between songs dont make you an amazing DJ. Also any DJ that spins and promotes regularly on the radio can pack a club, thats a given. Its more hype than talent from what I keep hearing everytime I tune in. In fact I didnt hear one song mixed the entire time I listened to hot 97. Again, this is from a Djs point of view. Now dont get me wrong, what those Djs do on the radio works in the clubs they play at. Please lets not continue where that Mr. Cee thread left off.

Also for the record I do like Bobby Konders, Camillo, Enuf and Funk Flex.

Thats just how the DJin culture is in NY. It's more so about interacting with crowd. So you get a lot of call and responses, slam mixing, yelling in the mic to hype up the crowd, etc. Don't get it twisted, all the DJ's I shouted out on here do know the fundamentals of DJin (scratching/mixing/blending, etc) But they cater to what the crowd wants. So from a DJin perspective, I understand what you are saying. But from a fan's perspective, they don't give a damn about the fundamentals, which is sad. At the end of the day, if you can keep the crowd rockin and everybody is having a good time, then you did ur job.

This is incorrect. KPWR-FM Power 106 (LA) and WQHT-FM Hot 97 (NYC) are both properties of Emmis Communications. Doc Wynter has absoulutely nothing to do with either of these stations. He is the VP or Urban Programming for Clear Channel Radio though. So you would be correct in saying he would have quality control over WWPR-FM Power 105 (NYC). Maybe you just mis-typed.


To keep with the discussion, for my job I monitor Hot 97 on a daily basis and Power 105 about 3x a week and I would say that Power 105 DJs tend to exhibit more fundamental DJ skill than most of the Hot 97 DJs. Even DJ Clue surprisingly.

However, I think that comparing the two stations' DJ line up is relative to the listener. Personally I feel they are about even talent wise.

If I was to rate the DJ line up per station, I would put DJ Camilo as the best all around DJ at Hot 97, and DJ Suss One would be his counterpart at Power 105.

you right about that. the best go unheard. far as the ones who are on radio, when it comes to actual skills and not just shouting or playing a hit, the best DJs at HOT 97 are camilo, coco chanel, enuff, kast one & big ben. on power 105, dj spin bad use to be THE BEST dj on NY radio on a skill level back when he was still there, nobody could touch him. Coco is nice (shes probably the best on 97 with scratchin) but shes not on spinbads level, he is on another level that few djs outside the battle arena can match.

the djs on hot 97 MOSTLY are older and when theyre not playing the top hits, they play old school (exceptions are camilo who is younger and plays new stuff and enuff who although isnt young, plays new stuff)

the djs on power 105 are younger and play newer stuff with a few exceptions...

basically if you want a hip hop radio station that plays a lot of throwbacks: hot97

if you want a station that plays more new hip-hop and HEAVY on the r&b: power 105

First off Clear Channel is all about sticking to there demo, its all about programming. That's why Power is heavy R&B can you say Female 18-34 wonder what they listen to more of?!

That's exactly what I've been saying. If you listen to Power on any given day, you are more likely to hear more R&B then Hip Hop, with the exception of their mix shows. And if you make a survey and ask the ladies which station they prefer, majority would go with Power because they more R&B during the day then Hot.

thought i'd give my 2 cents to this whole matter.

IN terms of skill (cuts, track selection, mic rockin, blending, etc etc) i gotta go with BIG BEN.... I've spun wit this guy many times, matter of fact i used to open for him back in the day rockin Vinyl, i mean this guy would rock doubles with no markers on his records, the guy just knew where to bring it back.. I was amazed! needless to say I've learned ALOT from him... none of the other DJ's on HOT97 can touch him... However, Cocoa Chanelle DOES come in second..., everything thats been said about her is true.

As far as Power 106 and west coast DJ's i definetly feel that they're technical skill, cuts, mixing, transitions, blending... are superior to HOT97 cats.. No Slamming records, no mic rockin, just striaght music. which is dope...

Ok, I see what you're saying, and coincidentally, I was actually listening to Hot97 the night he actually DID that show, but unless he became super smooth on Saturday/Sunday till 4, I don't think my mind will change.

I say this because of 2 things.

1 - Cocoa's movements are fluid and tight, if you didn't see it, you might not know she was even doing backspinning, and transistions. That's an extremely hard task to do.

None of B.Ben's cuts are that precise. Not saying he's not good, but not to that level of perfection.

2. Everytime I listen to her, she will do something where I get a chill and she IMMEDIATELY makes me want to go home and practice.

Jeff and Spinbad are the only other ones who make me want to do that on a CONSTANT basis.

Plus she's doing it on that whack azz setup that Hot97 has. Before this vid, I just KNEW she brought her own setup...

Coco being in this game for a minute (80's ) so she is on a different level/style from Ben, It's is just what you like in a DJ that make one sound better than the other.

i think coco is dope but she plays too many av8 breaks. her cuts are sharp as hell but it doesnt make her better than big ben. Big ben is the only dj that can crab & flare on hot97 plus his selection is diverse. Coco def needs more airplay tho cause she has a good flow.
