i hate using the xone 92 but it sure does sound nice. Filters are pretty nice too...
I sometimes just mix EDM using a high pass filter and not touching the EQs.

two of my favorite mixers:
Ecler HAK 320 www.djservice.com
Love the faders, the EQs, and the FX send/return. This mixer would sound clean with every knob turned all the way up. I sold it after I got a DJM-707, which I would regret if I didn't sell the 707 for more than I paid for it. All the pain was gone when I got my 57 though.
Urei 1601S www.ureidj.com
I still have this mixer. HIghly under-rated. I never intended on using the sampler, but once I figured it out I used it quite a bit. I also like the EQs on this one but I had to paint the knobs to tell where they were, no center click and the pre-fade cue was pre-EQ. I also love the dual stereo XLR output, which I why I got this mixer in the first place.

Allen & Heath Xone 92 Hands down the best sounding mixer. I have worked on and owned Pioneer 800, Rane empath, vestax 05-08, nothing sounds as good. I have not worked with the Ecler line as of yet. I swore I would never go with another mixer but I am seriously thinking of the 68.

ive always been a fan of the classic DJM-500 mixer.. unfortunately, those mixers had almost to no headroom
you shouldnt have to have the master slider to max in order to get proper output (even with the secret knob on the back turned up)

@ Nicky/Johnny - A few of my mates had those technic mixers and the faders would go at least once a month. Nice sound but the faders really let those mixers down. I had the version before hand that was a tank. Just tried to google a picture of it but can't find one. It was black face, white writing and had no EQ's.
I've currently got a Ecler Hak 300 that I use for gigs that I love and a Vestax 05 the first one with the Hamster Switch. Been meaning to buy something new for ages though.

I still don't get why peeps would get the 57 after SL3 came out. It sounds so much better, especially over big systems. Why not get the 56s and an SL3? 2.0 got FX now too, so even less reason to get the 57.

Easy, with the 57 you may lose a bit of sound quality BUT there is less to hook up and if your doin vids its pretty much a must have. I know you can mix the video with the keyboard or with midi (which is what i do now) but you lose ALOT from the performance, its so much better to watch the video gettin scratched in and out with the audio at once than to hear the audio then see the video move later

My new favorite mixer is the Rodec ScratchBox. I would rate it as being far superior to anything from the Rane line, and I sold my TTM57 to buy one. The 57 and 68 do have the advantage of having the built in audio interface as well as controls for SSL, but as far as the DJ mixer capacity, sound, and build quality, the Rodec stands alone.

I'm using the Mackie to control my Logic and Pro Tools sessions. I record in Logic & sometimes to 2" tape and mix down in Pro Tools. Thinking about adding another one as some of the songs that I am currently mixing go beyond sixteen tracks. So it would be like having a 32 track board. It has nice pre amps for the mics, good eqs, also good for live sound applications. I'm thinking about recording a series of live shows (for an EP/LP) for a band that I work with and running everything through this.
Outside of my own studio I have also mixed on the Neve 88R and the SSL 4000 G+ which is my favorite.
As far as DJ mixers I am currently using the Pioneer DJM 800 w Innofader. It's cool but nothing that I'm in love with. Let's see what new mixer/SSL controller Rane brings out next. Should be coming soon.?.?

Empath Rotary here.
No jonesing for an Empath SL so much...
Rane have proven their ability with digital circuitry as well as analogue: waiting to see a MIDI controller in the vein of the Denon HC1000 that fits the Empaths (with support for three decks and three decks only), as well as an isolator unit in a similar format (not rackmount) that routes into the FlexFX chain.
Best I can do as far as visualising is concerned...

True that. If Rane had released an Empath SL, I would have gone that route rather than the ScratchBox (which is actually a 3-channel mixer in spite of its apparent 2-channel layout). There are so few 3-channel mixers, particularly with a functional and usable layout, and the Empath is easily in the "cream of the crop" end of the 3-channel market. Throwing an SL interface in there and maybe some form of control surface (something simple like on the 57) and that would be the ideal mixer for many, many, many people.

+1 On the Korg Zero4. Smooth faders, cool dual layer effects, and firewire MIDI. All it needs is a headphone amp.

Plus I hate the Rane 68 and think the 57 is just okay in its present state. It definitely needs a refresh.

Now, if Rane would just put an SL3 in it with dual USB ports we'd be in heaven.
and they act like there is no demand for this mixer.
thing is, if the do the rotary, Imma be pissed that they didnt do the standard too! 3 channels 1 buttery fader & native control! sounds good to me!

sure as long as you have the Rane hardware... and it would be a bit awkward with no cross-fader, but not impossible!

I used one of these for a LONG time before I got my 57. Love it, but the headroom/gain output was lacking. There is a mod you can do to fix this, apparently, though.
It's still chillin' in my bedroom with a janky turntable hooked up to it lol. Just for listening to wax when I don't want to bust the 1200s out of the road cases.

Urei and Bozak rotary mixers are on a whole different level of sound quality, IMO. I was shocked and saddened when I compared them with my 57. Urei is a bit more edgy sounding, Bozak more mellow.
One fun fact: people insist that the reissue of the Urei 1620 can't as good as the original (mostly because they paid a lot for an old one, I suspect). But, they're so similar that you can literally use the vintage schematic to repair a modern one. So if you find one and aren't buying it as a collector piece, it's an excellent value. It's electronically the exact same thing, only the parts don't have 30 years of wear on them.

Besides my Ranes, I'd have to go with the 07ISP, that thing was sexy as hell.

Think again, as i have mentioned many many times, sh-1200 was the model that fell apart after two weeks, the sh-ex1200 was built like an absolute tank! Ive had mine for what seems like ever, deffo at least 7 years with pretty hardcore scratching & ive still not replaced a single fader. I love this mixer. Will be sorry to see it go when i buy my next one. Which will be a 3 channel. Im thinking the emapth. Any suggestions?

Ecler Hak 360
Word! I just dug out my Tascam XS-8 (pretty much a HAK 320 with Tascam branding) this last week for an all-vinyl set. LOVE that thing still, only issue is somewhat quiet output even thru XLRs. Need to do the jumper mod on it but I rarely use it lol.
Other than that, I do miss my Empath sometimes, that mixer was SO nice just all the way around. I love my 57, but it does lack some of the features that I really liked about the Empath.

Interesting thread revival.
Really got me thinking, never particularly liked pioneers. The denon x1100 is nice besides the clicky cross fader. It works well, just real noisy.
Rane would be first choice although I really want to test some ecler mixers, hard to come by in Australia though.

Generally not a fan of Pioneer mixers, but I just picked up a DJM-3000 for the occasional 3-turntable set... and I love it. For some reason the 19" layout just works way better for me than the square-setup of the 500/600/700/800 - and when doing 3 deck sets, I can have the 3rd deck sitting behind the mixer instead of doubling up on one side.
It has some crazy "effect mix" feature that I haven't messed with yet too... I really need to spend some time with this bitch and get comfy with her. Only thing I don't like is the lack of MIDI crossfader for video shows, but usually when I'm doing a 3-deck night, it's all oldskool wax and no video anyway lol.

Technics sh-ex1200 only just decided to sell up but got 10 years of use, scratching constantly and never changed the fader. The older shiny shdj models were the ones with the lame xfader. Never really got on with the vestax 05 for some reason just didn't feel right somehow. The 06 was good due to its size. Just got the 62 and it got me hooked on ranes so got a 56s too as i run 4 turntables.
I also don't get everyones beef with the technics 4 channel. Smooth crossfader, nice cut, eq is nice, looks good in silver, again i used it for years and never failed me.

I love my 64.
Next favorite was my Vestax Pro5, the cross fader would wear out a couple times a year but I grew the most as a turbtablist using that mixer practicing for hours every day so it has a special place in my heart. I still have it even having switched over to Rane years ago.

As a previous owner of the 57, 62 and current owner of the s9 I can say for me it wins hands down... Not one single issue with it since I've owned it back in October. This is with 1.80 up to 1.90 on Mavericks.

This does seem to be computer hardware / software related, and not to the mixer itself. I don't own an S9 myself, but I once hooked up my laptop to an in-store model. It gave the exact same issues, while it worked flawlessly in the in-store mac.

I believe its hardware related. The mixer turned itself of within the first 10 minutes of getting it and won't turn on. It only turned on after i shook it to see if something was loose. I doubt the quality control is as rigid as Rane or a smaller botique type company.

No modern mixer is going to be as well made as a Rane.
