DJ A-NAK 4:50 AM - 28 November, 2006
i am in the market for a new phone/pda and i'd like the advice of my fellow serato users and dj's...

please list the device your using....
it's advantages over the rest and some other features you use it for in particular.
thanks
A-NAK

i just think i might get a TREO and heard it has the advantage over the blackberry because the blackberry is geared more towards emailing strictly....

I have the Treo 700w running windows mobile 5.0. I love this thing. I have had blackberrys in the past and this thing kicks its ass. You can play mp3s videos it has internet explorer. It integrates with outlook and can recieve direct push email from exchange. My fav thing is being i work in computers i can control the servers at my clients from the handheld using the builtin terminal services client.

The bad:

Its kinda bulky. Battery is kinda wack if you use the phone a lot. You need a storage card to store any kind of music or videos on it. The biggest issue is probably the windows mobile software can freeze just like a windows computer so sometimes the phone will ring and when you go to pick it up the software will freeze and you will have to reboot the phone. At work 4 of us have em and we have to reboot the phone like once a day.

But i still love it.

try the blackjack, it looks pretty sweet. DO NOT get the tmobile MDA, its really slow, and shitty, dont let the touch screen fool you.
CMOS 6:26 AM - 28 November, 2006
I thought the sidekick was like the DJ Accessory. Every club i go to the dj pulls out a sidekick during the night for some reason or other.
DJ Limelight 6:27 AM - 28 November, 2006
Yezzur... The Blackberry is geared more towards e-mailing, but the web browser works pretty well. I have to have e-mail access because I have my website e-mail coming to my Blackberry just in case someone e-mails me wanting to do something last minute.

Skeetz is right. DO NOT get the MDA. It sucks. I sent it back after 48 hours. I use the Blackberry 8700.

Dude... The Blackjack has one of THE dopest features I have ever seen on a phone. You can hold it up to a speaker while a song is playing and it will analyze the beat and the lyrics and tell you who the song is by as well as the title. I sh*t you not. I almost want it for that!
GoodVibez 7:55 AM - 28 November, 2006
i was looking into the tre 700wx as well cant you hook it up to your laptop to get wi fi connect?
mister iLL 1:19 PM - 28 November, 2006
yo i just got a cingular 8125 (pretty much the same as the t-mobile mda)....what was wrong with the mda?
Dj-Motion 1:23 PM - 28 November, 2006

Maaaannnn, that doesn't impress me. Let me find a phone that when you hold up to a female, it will analyze her mind, body and credit and tell you if this girl is crazy or not. That's the phone I want.
DJ GaFFle 2:30 PM - 28 November, 2006
I used the Blackberry. I works with the BES device at my job. Primarily for work email, it is more secure than most other phones as we have server controlled password-deactivation and controls.

I want the Blackberry Pearl (smaller footprint).
wex 2:45 PM - 28 November, 2006
i have an MDA and love it. i think it's a great device (especially with the firmware update)... but it's not really something you can just hop on and have a good experience with. it takes some customization, a lot of practice, and the keyboard takes some getting used to.

cons:

cramped keyboard
t-mobile's service

pros:

SIZE
ability to open & edit all sorts of documents
decent email interface
handy touchscreen
great looking 1.3mp camera
miniSD slot (mine has a 2 gig card for movies, music, docs, etc)
windows media player (even allows you to stream)
wi-fi & bluetooth

I have a Blackberry 8700 (Cingular). I've never owned a Treo, but talking with friends who owns them always say the Blackberry is better for email and the Treo is a good "all around" device (phone, Windows features, etc).

The Blackberry is a decent phone. I don't care too much for the way it stores contacts, but it works. The internet browser is okay. I don't surf on it too much, but I can usually get things done if/when needed. I love the Outlook sync. I type in notes while I'm on Outlook (names of songs, shopping list, etc) and it synchs to the BB when I connect it (and vice-versa). No camera. No SD. No WiFi. No Media Player (that I know of). Just business.

One thing I noticed with cell carriers is that CDMA-based phones (Verizon, Sprint) have horrible battery lives compared to GSM phones (Cingular, T-Mobile). Keep in mind, I'm not as in touch with my geek side as I used to be, so my termonology may be wrong... all I know is my Verizon phone needs to be charged after a day or two if I use it (no more than 1 day if I use it heavily) and the Cingular can last a week easy. Coverage is much better with Verizon where I'm at though. Just something else to consider when choosing...

I must say, I get more females asking about the 8700 than I did the older model BB I had. They love this thing.
dj kiss 3:58 PM - 28 November, 2006
I Run the Motorola Q, Strickly for scheduling, syncs to microsoft outlook, holds all my contacts and creates a backup incase i loose my phone. Slim and light, has a qwerty keyboard and is pretty simple. Cons - Not a full version of windows mobile, not touch screen, carryin case sucks.
DeezNotes 5:29 PM - 28 November, 2006
I just got finished playing with the Blackberry 8100 Pearl (T-Mobile): www.phonescoop.com

As far as form factor, the thing is NICE! Perfect size and weight in a nice package. The trackball is REALLY nice and it's a sexy ass phone.

Check out www.phonescoop.com for info on just about any new or old phone. I also use www.howardforums.com to learn any "hacks" for my phone.
CMOS 6:32 PM - 28 November, 2006
Goodvibes im not positive but i think you can do that. For some reason i think thats an add on with your carrier for a monthly charge.
DJ A-NAK 6:46 PM - 28 November, 2006
yea see i think i am looking at the Palm version of the Treo...seems to be easier to navigate around?? are there pros and cons with this??
appreciate the comments

for me the MDA was super slow on AIM, and i got really shitty reception with it. However, i never knew there was a firmware update for it. That may have solved the issuesi just described.
DJ Silk 6:55 PM - 28 November, 2006
I love my Blackberry 7100. For me the selling point is the fact that I can send and receive emails while I'm on a call.
The web browsing and GPS is great too.
DJ A-NAK 6:55 PM - 28 November, 2006
hows the AIM feature and texting with the Treo??
CMOS 7:32 PM - 28 November, 2006
I hate the palm version of the treo. Its so limited and that wack ass versa mail client will kill your battery.

I recently went from a Sidekick to an MDA. The MDA is awesome!! Djskeetz is 100% right though about AIM. Slow as shit!! But then again, coming from an ex-Sidekick owner, nothing is gonna run AIM as fast. Still, the MDA is a sweet piece of equipment one you get used to Relative Mode. ;)
sixxx 8:57 PM - 28 November, 2006

why is sweet when you get used to relative mode?

yes, and about aim. It would lag sometimes upwards to as much as 20 minutes to get a reply. weird.
HittinSkinzTa2 9:09 PM - 28 November, 2006
Because of all the threads posted in this forum where people talk about switching from Absolute to Relative. Get it?
I sometimes have IM's that come through HOURS later. Not sure why it runs so slow.
djskeetz 9:17 PM - 28 November, 2006
lol.i get it now. relative rocks!

yeah, that's happened to me to. weird.
djskeetz 9:21 PM - 28 November, 2006
Yo, someone posted there is a firmware update for the MDA. might help with the MDA. right now im on the T-809 Samsung Slider, but i have like 5 phones.
HittinSkinzTa2 9:22 PM - 28 November, 2006
I've already got the firmware update... Same Shit. S L O W
djskeetz 9:28 PM - 28 November, 2006
lol. aight. thought it might help. i got a used MDA, and it had all these crazy pornography on it. like some hardcore shit. After checking out the phone i figured out it was Some Famous Porn Producers former MDA! haha.
Dj Ryme 9:37 PM - 28 November, 2006
I've got the same sidekick sixxx has...... pretty dope. I use the calendar alot. Its great for texting too. Like it alot better than my Razr.
Detroitbootybass 10:11 PM - 28 November, 2006
Treo 700 here...

:-)
wex 10:22 PM - 28 November, 2006
true, the MDA's fireware update helps with MANY things (namely, the email client is drastically improved... and makes it a "push" email device")... but AIM is still a weak spot.

me, i dont use AIM on the MDA at all... so it's not an important feature to me.
djskeetz 10:31 PM - 28 November, 2006
ic. i do enjoy the contact table interface.
DJ d.range 12:52 AM - 29 November, 2006
i got a blackberry 7100 for nextel. i like it.my friend has a treo and ii hAas more capabillities, but i'm happy with my bb.i would look into the new blackberry pearl, they added a camera and memory card ,which mine doesn't have,i love the blackberry interface very intuitive.

check the prices--i think the pearl might be more worth the money
b.o.w.d. 6:06 AM - 29 November, 2006
I have the blackberry 7520 thru nextel and it gets the job done here in the DC area. Definitely a bit on the bulky side, but the phone is cool and the email/txt messaging is always on point.

I think most DJ's who have the sidekick feel like you. I'm one of them. Mine recently malfunctioned. It had problems charging due to the fact that people have been pulling on the cord while it was charging. Well, it was under warranty so a replacement is on the way.

and WTF is it with T-Mobile exchange program for the sidekick? It used to be that they would send you the replacement first, then you would put the old one in and mail it back. NOW THEY WANT YOU TO SEND YOURS FIRST... What a bunch of crap.

Anyway, still happy with t-mobile and the sidekick. Oh yeah, except when they update the system at 2am on saturdays and I lose my network. hahaha
eder 8:15 PM - 29 November, 2006
Which carrier are you planning to go with, a-nak? I did an internship in the data sales consulting department of verizon wireless this summer so I know pretty much everything about all the PDAs that everyone offers. PM me or something and let me know what you're interested in getting out of your phone and I'll rec you the best fit.
DJ A-NAK 8:39 PM - 29 November, 2006
Sprint...it's my current provider so i want to upgrade to PDA and get the most reliable and still great features...
eder 9:16 PM - 29 November, 2006
hmm...it pretty much comes down to personal preference-

i'd go with the new 700wx if you like windows. it has more RAM than the verizon phone which is my only qualm with the verizon verizon of it (the 700w). plus the fact it'll work on Sprint's high-speed data network.

i'd go with the 700p if you've ever used (and liked) a palm before. stable as a mofo and once again, uses the high-speet data network. plus the 700p has access to the sprint tv network.

if you want to use the blackberry enterprise server (if your work has that), i'd go with the 7130e. the 8703 is REALLY wide, while the 7130e is roughly a little bit larger than most flip phones.

if you want to have a big keyboard or would like to be able to use wifi as well as the sprint network for internet/e-mail and such, the 6700 is the way to go for that.

they all do the same things (e-mail, internet, calender, etc). It all comes down to your personal preference (windows/palm/blackberry, size/keyboard size/extra features/etc)

hopefully this helped you out. let me know if you need more help deciding.
DJ A-NAK 3:49 AM - 30 November, 2006
yea much help...i know at this point almost 100% i'm scorin the 700p because it has got what i need...appreciate the help everyone and eder...
