only thing making me nervous is since im doin videos i bought an external HD and ive head they can be finicky but last night i transferred all the vids to is and annalized them before i went to bed, i woke up and loaded a video and it loaded so it should be fine, just hate adding more pieces to the setup, more pieces = more things can go wrong

Nice.. you get a fist pump, lol! Get there early so you can setup without problems, no rushing! Once your setup, practice and warm up your ears and hands for at least a half hour. Do a set without anyone hearing it. Start off chill and build up from that. More importantly mix as much as you can and rock em as soon as you get a decent crowd. Keep em there, take their requests. Build a relationship with them so you can keep working.

One last thing.. make sure your hair game is tight, lol!

Nothing ever goes as planned but you become a better DJ/Performer with every blunder you face, and in a few months you will have the place eating out of your hand!! Ya thats what i had in mind, i wanna get there at like 7 or 8 to get started setting up, the old DJ got there at like 9:30 but he was just using their computer, im on from 10 to 2 so i figures if i get there at 8is i still have plenty of time to run to GC or radio shack if i need anything connector wise, which shouldnt be a problem cause ive played there 1 time before and everything was hooked up great. Noone really goes out on Fri in mobile and this place is kinda small so i think the 1st hour or so i can pretty much just have fun with it. The owner said i can play whatever i want but when a crowd gets there cater to whatever crowd is there which should be fun cause the crowds are ALWAYS different, she said sometimes its white frat boys, Ques and AKAs come in there alot, older people come there after big downtown events, alot of trendy club types will pop up from the other club ect

the guys whos spott im taking still works for the club doin work on the building durring the day (hes a friend of mine hes the one that got me in the door) and hes gonna pop through and kinda fill me in on some of the in and outs of the place, people i should know what crowds to expect ect ect

also the nice thing is the owners heard me before its the same spot i played at on new years (there were some issues on that story lol) and she liked what i was doin and how i played so its not liek im going in blind auditionm style

Another thing that kinda cool is the club its attached to is one of mobiles hot spots and since their connected by a door and theres usually no cover i will pretty much always have a crowd drawn i just gotta keep em there, and the guy who spins at that club is one of the guys who got me into spinnin serious to begin with, someone i kinda look up to as far as local djs go so to know that he was the guy who took me aside like 6 years ago and said "quit talkin bout gettin tables and do it get serious you would be a great dj you wanna know why....cause you LOOK like a great DJ" and now hes kinda my direct compition kinda shows how far ive come, its really cool to be able to use that as a measuring stick, if im good enough to really draw his crowd over itll be amazing

Not sure yet, since the crowd varrys im just going to have to be on game with my crowd reading, gonna start off kinda safe with your billboard top 40 but depending on the crowd i wanna push it a bit and get into an open format, she does want me to keep the energy high so im thinkin 120 and up unless i get a hood\young crowd whos wantin that new gucci\waybne type stuff but even if i dip down there im going to transition up ASAP

I know i have to control the crowd and lead them ect ect but until i get locked in at the spot a lil more i want to play it closer to the safe side and keep the "this dj sucks i dont know this music" "this dj sucks hes playing remixs" "this dj sucks he only played____ 4 times before i got here" ect ect ect complaints down to a minimum, its a small place and the owners really accesable so i wanna put a smile on as many faces as possible

i wanna earn the owners trust that i know what im doing before i start pushing my musical envelope

also thats something im looking forward to at this spot, since theres a bigger club playing all the normal top 40 stuff 1 room over i think it WILL give me liscense to push the envelope and try some out of the box stuff to compete with it, i dout im goin to pull a crowd and keep it by playing the exact same songs as the bigger more packed club

Back when I was there it was not a thug place...but it's been years since I was there. Loved the DJ booth that was higher than the floor.

One thing im hoping stops real quick is that the current DJ is SUPER request happy, hes constantly on the mic asking for requests (makes sense since hes not mixing)...i hope he hasnt trained these people on requestsd........shutter

Turn that into a positive....

My current spot is a 10 -2 (,vs 9 - 2) and it is a little tougher. What you may want to do since you are new and you need to establish a connection with the regulars and patrons is take requests EARLY (10 to 11:15/11:30). They may ask you for heaters at 10:30, tell them you'll play it after 11:30/12:00 JUST FOR THEM. Some of the early request that fit the Opener mode will make your job easier because you are playing stuff they want to hear and you can build sets around that.

Train them to make requests early and tell them that you don't really play requests after midnight, shit you'll probably have midnight to close mapped out for you so it will be a breeze.

It's 11:30am est and no update...either Bezzle did such a great job last night that he got laid...or they lynched him.

ok heres the low down on the gig, got there early to set up and got that done with no incident, when i was done the owner had a tiny concern about how the wires looked visually so as i was cleaning them up a bit i accidentally pulled on the external HD wire causing my brand new terabyte HD to do a back-flip off the table, i dusted it off and plugged it back in and NOTHING, after having about 3 heart attacks i realised the cable wasnt plugged in all the way and fixed the issue. I talked to the owner, bartender, and new shot girl and got a feel for everyone and started playing. While i was playing the DJ from the club next door came over to kick it and told me they had some kinda private event goin on in his spot so he didnt have much to do and kicked it, he let me know the owner had asked him about me and he gave the thumbs up that got me in the door (THANKS BRO!!), at this point there were 0 customers, at first i thought i was just so bad i was scarrin em away (lol) but i found out it was cause A) the crowd that usually comes from the attached club never came because of the private event and every bar on the street was dead, i even walked out on the balcony and saw that for myself the entire area was a ghost town. So i used the opportunity to have a BLAST i got to play rock rap breaks electro country, i really just went nuts on em doin some quickmixn and wordplay (wordplay stolen DIRECTLY from THE micheal basic lol), evenutally i went out and kicked it with the staff who was chilln on the balcony (theres a speaker out there to so no they werent running from the music) and they all said they LOVED the music. The owner actually came out and personally said i was great because i didnt play the same songs EVERY other dj in mobile plays and she loved the mixing of different genres that i was doin. Eventually 2am rolled around and we still had not had any customers except the dj from next door who kept comming back to watch, lol he came back and watched for so long the owner of his club had to come tell him to come back to his own spot. After his private event was over he acutually came and watched the rest of my set. Heres where it gets interesting. When the private party let out next door i was doing a full on Fl breaks and electro set (my fave genre and the bartender\owners too bartender was even doing a glowstick show with stringed glowsticks straight 1990s raver style) and the people from the party next door heard it and all came over, apparently it was a bunch of asians and some dudes from orlando and they were HYPE to hear some edm, they all came over and started dancin and takin pictures with me but more importantly there were droppin mad money at the bar. I got requests for benny banasi and tiesto in about 3 different languages. The owner told me that it was up to me i could stop and call it a night or keep goin, i told her id play longer as long as they were buyin drinks, i did another hour and they all refused to leave lol, they were sayin its the best music they've heard since they've been in mobile. Stopped my shift around 5ish and had to make em all leave. Owner was mad appreciative since those people were the only people who spent money in there that night and really appreciated me keepin them in there spendin. The owners only complaint is she said she would like me to talk it up on the mic more but said it wasnt a big deal cause there wasnt reall a crowd (i need BIG WORK on my mic game that shits harder than it looks!!!!!)

All in all it was a pretty awsome experience, i got to play EVERYTHING i like, i fit in great with the staff, the owner likes me, my girl got along GREAT with everyone who works there (which is MAJOR cause when she dont shes a vibe KILLA) and overall i think i did a great job, it looks like hopefully ill be there for a while

As a far as the mic thang..I tell folks all the time when I do small parties and stuff.."if you want a DJ..then I'm your guy..if you want an MC..I cant help ya". But like in any other event, they're ALWAYS seems to be people who want to talk on the mic..so i just give it to they azz! I'm not a mic person either.

Whew, I thought you wouldnt make it through the night without someone throwing something at you or being thrown out literally. Good shit man. The owner was happy, thats all that counts to keep you spinning. As far as the mic work, that takes practice. Give your night a name, theme. Start letting people know who you are during breaks of the song. Something easy, "you are now rocking with Dj Pauly M. Bezzle, Club____ , Friday night fist pump"!!! Make it quick, easy. Get used to that and everything else will come. Dont yell, be cool and keep the mic level balanced with the music. Practice at home and listen to your voice through the master mix on your headphones. You did good kid were all proud of you lol.

All good to hear it went down well, sounds like you definitely got that first impression done really well.
One of the thing I noticed, good to hear you kept it going even though the spot was completely dead. I know a lot of DJs that would've just dropped on a mix of theirs and sat at the bar on a night like that.
If you kept it going till 5 on a dead night and got the bar some business they wouldn't have had otherwise the owner/managers will definitely be happy with what you did.
Nice work playing a heap of different styles through the night to, can only look good to show you can play a heap of different styles.

Ok heres the update, sat night im kinda left wonderin how good of a job i did, weather was terrible so there were not alot of people out, i got there and set up on time and let a mix play for about half an hour then started mixin a warmup set while waiting for some customers, it was DEAD until around midnightwhen an older couple came in (regulars), they were on some dancin with the stars type shit so i kinda catered to them for a while and i assumed they enjoyed it since they dropped me a $40 tip for playing some older rock for them, eventually a group of about 10 girls came up there (looking confused that i was playin rock) so i dropped into some top 40 rap\booty music, the older couple went back to the bar(which is great cause the bartender said they spent a good bit there), eventually another group of girls came up there and were dancin too and a couple guys came up there to hang out but i noticed there were a good bit of people walkin through the club and not stopping (since my clubs connected to the bigger club alot of people use it as a quicker entrance since not alot of people know about it) and that kinda made me a bit self conscience, wondering if mabye i had been playing a different song mabye they would have stopped and checked it out though im probably just overannalyzing since most people at the moment are there to go to the other club (apparently not alot of people know my area exists). So this went on for about an hour, but after that i mixed into a new song and the girls on the floor stopped dancing and dipped suddenly followed by the guys who were watching them. I though shit did i just kill the dancefloor? About an hour went by and finally another group of girls came up there to dance, i played a few songs for them when the original older couple came up and threw me another 40 to try to work it back into their music a bit, i figured i could walk the line a bit and keep both of the groups happy and got a bit darring but ended up losing the group of girls after the 1st non top40 rap track i threw on, i played a few more nonconventional tracks for the older couple (once again the only people in the room) and they told me i was great gave me another 40 and dipped. A bit later the 1st group of girls i played for came back, they hopped on stage and were dancin near me so i called one over and was chattin with her and jokingly asked which song scared them off earlier (tryin to learn my crowds) and she told me it wasnt that at all, they went downstairs cause the birthday girls exboyfriend came up there and pissed her off then went to the other club to start shit with her new BF. They danced for a while and then left again and i got a new group that walked in the door walked straight to the stage and said they wanted to hear lil wayne gucciman and hood music, it was gettin late and they were the only people there so i said fuck it and played some shit like that for them and kept them dancin till we closed.

I didnt have any complaints at all, no play something i can dance too or do you have any GOOD music, and i acutually had alot of compliments on the mixing but im kinda wondering if i was mabye fuckin up on the song selection or not building enough energy or anything like that. For the most part i played it safe and i know the club next door was playing pretty much the exact same music, but im wondering if i did all i could to keep people in my area, its definatley a tough club to play because in this one when you kill the dancefloor they dont necessarily go to the bar and chill, they can just go through a door and their in a different club. I was chattin it up with the owner afterwards and she said she liked all the music i played and told me i made a good choice tryn to please the older couple cause they spent tons of money at the bar that night and the group i sacrificed all had under 21 braclets from the other club on (my club dosent charge a cover so its all about bar sales)

A couple issues that i think also affected my night, i found out the girls BF started a fight in the other club that was pretty massive (one of those fights where the entire club gets involved chairs are thrown shit gets broken fights), also in the other club the main entrance, bar and dancefloor are on floor level, theres also a upstairs with a bar and pooltables and thats where there door to my spot is, apparently the other club shut down the upstairs bar so noone would go up there and wander into my spot (this is the 1st night theyve done this so i kinda take it as a compliment) also my GF who was in the other club told alot of people about my club and most people she talked to were under the impression that that was a private VIP area and didnt think they were allowed up there

So all and all it was an experience, im really not sure how well i did, i know there are some areas i obviously need to work on and im sure that will all come with experience but im sure theres alot of stuff im blaming on myself that had nothing to do with me as well.

That is pretty cool that your Mom and Dad came down to support you on your first night out, plus gave a $120 advance on your allowance to boot ($40+40+40 = $120 right???)

lol ya im hoping to get some honest feedback but im predicting what im acutually going to get will be far from constructive critisism

Dont sweat the multi club stuff...at least for the first month...the fact you were able to jump genres and hold diff crowds for awhile is the key...
Ive been in clubs where its the norm to rotate...hr here, 30 mins there, 2 songs here...the key is to rock what you got while you got it...eventually if you will either see no one will stay or that you get a following willing to stay with you all night...just takes time and like you said no one even knows they are allowed up there...

I say give it a good month before you start to analyze the situation...



I was in the same position when I moved back home...got a gig in the smaller front room and for 2 weeks...everyone just paid walked through and didnt come back till about an hr before closing...after those two weeks you could see more and more people coming back before 1 then before 12 till it got to crowded and they were like yeah next week we gotta switch you to the main room...


Just try to avoid the put on a cd mentality till you get a consistent crowd that way when you do get ANYBODY hanging out your energy is already up and you'll be ready to cater to them and in the mood to rock...

Ive even gone as far as to just recreate a mix live while waiting, practiced some light scratching or beat juggling...anything to just keep my energy where it needs to be...

Glad to hear it went well Bezzle, well, it sounds like it went well anyway...it's great when you hear a DJ who is just getting into playing the clubs, when they first start off they have so much fire in their belly lol. But you WILL end up bitter and twisted like the rest of us haha, only kidding. You cant control anything that happens away from the dancefloor (fights etc) so dont sweat it, they aint issues for you to worry about. It is always a test when you start off at a new club but in a few weeks you will get used of the certain times that different crowds come to the place and change your music accordingly. Ya one issue with this spot is noone knows its there, in the main club nooone really goes upstairs and when you do its not an obvious door that goes to our spot, when you do go through the door theres a middle room with bathrooms and you have to walk through that and then go around a corner to be in my spot, the other way to get in is to take a spiral staircase up to a patio type area and go in there, its abover a restraunt and very not noticable, theres no sign to speak of except foa small chalkboard at the bottom of the spiral staircase thaty just basically says my name and the clubs name but its not something that catches the eye, so if you dont know about this spot youd never happen apon it. I think the rain really hurt us that night to because im assuming alot of busniess comes from foot traffic of people walking around downtown (its on a street with lots of bars and clubs bourbon St style)

be proactive then...Shit Get some black paint and some glow in the dark paint and "light the way" (assuming the owners are the same for both spots...) lol

lol I acutually did that, gotta give a shoutout to my girlfriend who (unexpectantly) really hit the floor running on this one, that girl was workin the crowd like she was the one being payed to be there, every 30 minutes or so id see her pop in with like 15 girls saying see this is that place is told you about or comming in there with alot of guys flirting with her, introducing them to the chicks and then dippin lol She was even help flip the floor, i gave a few birthday shoutouts and afterwards shed go up to them and be like ohhh its your bday lets all go do shots, i was talkin to the dj who used to work there and he got kinda bitchy about that sayin it might piss off the other owner. I see that mabye wouldnt be good but its not like im sending her over there to do it shes a ligitimate customer over there whos just chattin with her friends and happens to pop back and forth.....i dont think i should tell her not to tell her friends this clubs here

Loved the writeup, Bezzle! Sounds like your first night at your new residency couldn't have gone any better, considering the circumstances!

As for mic skills, here's an idea that I've used over and over again -- Use the fact that the venue wants you to step up your mic game (and the fact that the owner and staff seem like cool people who enjoy innovation) in your favor. Go over to the owner when there's a decent size crowd (like at 3am or so on the night you covered) and ask him/her if they could declare a window of time (say, 10-15 mins) where there will be a special, such as beers for happy-hour prices, or 1/2 off shots. Then mix in a song about drinking and during an intro announce the special in a very excited/enthusiastic manner. You'll practice your mic skills, get the bar business, show cohesiveness between the venue and the DJ, and create an excitement with the announcement. Keep going with drinking songs (put your drinks up, etc.) until the special is over. Works for me!

Im sure this will come back around to bite me in the ass and invite all sorts of surely hilarious comments but i really wanna get some honest and hopefully constructive opinions (im interested to see what sixxx writes back in particular lol), i went ahead and posted the playlist for both nights, overall i was much happier with fri nights set than sat, sat i began putting to much pressure on myself to pull and keep a crowd, it didnt flow as natural and i feel i played it to safe. Also remember when lookin at the playlists that for the better half of the 2 nights i was playing to an empty room so it was less set up and more of what i wanted to hear at the time on the big soundsystem and kinda testin some things out, theres also a few hiccups for requests that came in (if theres 1 girl\group of girls in the room and she has a request odds are im playing it lol). When people did show up i tried to change the pace to the vibe i picked up off them.

Obviously you cant get the full vibe without hearing the mix (im going to try and record them in the future i just didnt want to chance any performance issues on my first few days) but i would like to know if anyone sees anything that just jumps out as terrible or if some of you vets (audio1 micheal basic ect ect ) can comment on the flow\energy of the mix and what i can do to improve it

IMHO You're never 'playing to an empty room'. If there's no one on the dance floor, you're playing to the staff. I've gotten several gigs because the staff enjoyed the music and told the owner or friends!

practice at home belting shit out... suck ur stomach in..and hold the mic like a man, not a bitch.. or a rapper.. make sure ur not covering the top of the mic., that will prevent u from being heard well. in the begining of ur mic building skills, its good to look away from the crowd, or look at the ceiling, i remember when i was younger.. the crowd intimidated me... so i would look at the ceiling or the turntables or a bartender that i knew very well and made me comfortable.. after a while u'll get used to getting on the mic.. and then u can look at the crowd directly.. listen to ur mic levels as much as ur mix levels.. ask bartenders if they can hear u properly. i prefer to turn down the music a notch instead of using the mic button that does it for you...

always start off saying the same shit.. it makes it easier for you(i learned this from radio) start off saying.. "friday night! its dj bezzle in the mix..." and then u can ramble on about the drink special or upcoming events or whatever.. i always do this and it works great!
notice how radio stations they always spout out whatever radio station they are, and whatever their phrase is..
like my radio station will say "star 104 eries number one hit music station.. its ty the night guy" and then blah blah blah.

plus by doin this... ur building ur dj name ;)

staff = 1 bartender + owner lol, owner likes everything and the bartender is into EDM so if your considering them into the equation i think i did a pretty good job

im not at all intimidated by the crowd, the problem i have (and this will come as a shock t board members) is the second i pick up the mic i run outta shit to say, and when i do think of something i feel like im being fake, like ill end up thinkin of something a big name dj would say and i feel like im acting "cool" and i feel like a duechebag





this was the owners only issue with my sat gig, she said the levels on the mic werent right and you couldnt understand alot of what i was saying

ya im good at networking and getting people to show up but for this last weekend i only had about 2 days notice that i even had the job so i really didnt have time to put together a street team lol, i did make a point of bringin into conversation everywhere i went for those 2 days which is great cause i had no idea that noone really knew about this place

lol and of course with my luck it looks like my gig may get a bit more complicated, i just got a call from the old DJ who said he was talkin to the owner (the dudes doin paint work for the club now) and apparently the owner of the club my spots attached to is bitching to my boss that me being there is hurting HIS busniess lol....apparently its been slow for the last few weeks and last week when i played to many of HIS customers were going up to my area to hear me play....so many that he apparently had to shut down his upstairs bar and tell people who wanted to go up there that it was a VIP only area and that they couldnt go up there.....apparently he is also taking issue to me ADVERTISING and telling people that im playing there on fri and sat nights. A lil background, the owners are brother and sister and both lease their properties seperatley from someone else in their fam....when i signed on i was told there were 2 seperate busniesses and there was compition and she wanted to do better than the other area. The owner of my spot hasnt brought anything up to me, on the countrary she called me last night saying shes getting banners, fliers, ect made which i guess means im she likes what im doin since the last DJ never even got on a flier......should be interesting

@ Bezzle yeah dont ask for more money yet. she will offer it soon, once her brother try's to steal you from her. it will get packed in a few weeks or so. when people find out they have a better dj that listen to their request.I do a bar and at first it was empty. they said they a dj that was not good and didnt listen to request. but my uncle had his party their 2 time's and I djed it and the owner was like who is that dj. so i ended up getting a 3 day gig their paying well. its also free to get in but the bar make's a grip. and i got like 3 raises already. well to start at 7pm in stead of 9pm. but he paid he $75 more each night. I do video on friday karaoke on thur and sat video again. all three night stay packed. the other bar gets mad cuz i steal their crowd. but even the old dj came thru and was like telling me to backdown on the music selection. I said ok yeah ok and just hit'em harder. i killed it last night I played that new llyod and mystikal set me free and they went nuts. I was talking to my cousin like i wanna see their response off this new track. boy he was writing down everything i played .but keet up the good work.

lol this thread had me ROLLIN, sorry for the wait ive been down in panama city beach doin the spring break thing tryna make it up to myself for missin the WMC, heres the gig update, fri night was realy weak, i played for about 2 hours with no customers again, i think its the spring break season because even the attached club was dead. After that a couple of "regulars" came in, which was funney since before the night started the manager warned me about them and told me that since they come in often to try and cater to them BUT dont let them run shit cause they think they do and the other DJ used to do everything they said, apparently they have their own playlist on the computer the club was using to play music off of. So they come in and 3 songs later i recieve my 1st napkin playlist (ill post a pic later lol), the songs on the napkin werent all to bad but they def werent songs to mix together so i played 2 then popped the other 5 in the prepare window to get to as i could. Not to mention they were all bangers and it was still early with no crowd. They danced to 1 song then apparently got mad and left when their playlist wasnt played in order on request. I asked the manager afterwards and she gave me props for not bein a jukebox and said thats what she wanted to see as the last DJ would just [lay every song on request and never got a good tempo goin. So after that my night became kinda difficult, basically the next 4 hours or so consisted of a small group of lets say 10 people wandering over from the other club and kinda request something different that I was playing (which was really funny cause i would be playing some 120/128ish dance stuff and they would come over with "we have some ladies who want to dance could you stop playing this stuff and play something more up tempo like bedrock or 5 star bitch") then i would be like sure and run through the slow BPM hoopd shit i know they were asking for and they would stay for about an hour dancin then pop over to the next club, then a new group of 10 or so would pop over and ask for the same low bpm ish.....it got so bad by the 3rd or 4th group i would start playing a track and see someone walk up to talk to me, id cue up a track and tell him to hold on before he said anything then when he started to talk i would fade into the next song and their eyes would light up and theyd say "I WAS JUST GONNA REQUEST THAT" lol.Towards the end of the night we had one big group come in and i had em dancin and my girl came up and said the owner was kinda bitchin i wasnt on the mic enough so i spent the last hour or so on the mic between each and every mix...had the manager and crowd crackin up at the dumb shit i was sayin. I didnt think i did that great but almost everyone who came through made a point to come up to me before they left and tell me i was an awsome DJ and they all asked what nights i would be playing so they could come back.

At the end of the night the owner said i was doin great and said not to worry about the small crowds cause she talked to other owners and every spot is sufferin right now with alot of people out of town on spring break and what nots.......Sat night i didnt play because i was out of town (i had already discussed this with the owner i had booked it and had money down on a trip before i was offered the job so i had the other dj fill in, she said it wasnt a problem and if i ever had other gigs or needed the night off it was totally cool for him to fill in)

I really wasnt feeling my set, i hate playing tracks more than once a night and i also hate staying at LOW bpms after midnight but i figured if you have a 100% new group come in and thats what they wanna hear then fuck it, The panama trip really helped me out though cause after my fri night i was thinkin mabye i need to get my head outta that high BPM open format stuff cause obviously people dont like it but then every club i went to in panama was playing a similar style to me and the same tracks i like and noone was running up there bitching about the music being to fast, so i know its possible to play higher BPM non radio hit stuff in my general area i just gotta train em and start building a crowd to work with, kinda make a name for myself at what i wanna do instead of catering to what i havta play.

My panama city trip was dope though big up to any DJs on here who spin down there i didnt see anyone half steppin down there and i was def feelin the vibe you guys built down there......i gotta move from bama to Fl lol

btw yall take notres on what im missing, apparently my GF "forgot" to pack my laptop and iphone charger (she hates the amount of time i post on here lol) so im using the hotel computer right now. The owner has a good head on her shoulders and i think im going to have a sitdown with her and find out what direction she wants the club to go. It dosent make sense to me to be trying to cater to the crowd that spills over from the bigger club. Since that club plays the whole "what the people want top 40", i think i should be able to play my specialty and do higher BPM dance music. The issue there would be i would have to BUILD a crowd that is really into that, since theres no spots in my area playing this i would have a lock on the market...the only problem is the build time




True, im using this to build my crowd reading skills so im taking hits and misses, my main issue as ive ALWAYS said is the crowds in mobile SUCK. Even when i was in panama city 2 hours away and in Pcola 1 hour away they were playing high energy stuff so i know it can work if i do it right.....also these last 2 weeks arent good gauges of how this gig will go, its s big college scene with big beach scenes in driving distance. Im thinking the upcomming few weeks will be better

take care in that even building your own night (which I agree with)...that you do it once you have a crowd to play for...I play alot of BMORE and songs that my area is unfamiliar with...JACKSONVILLE...and I have to be careful I usually do it in the middle or complementing other safer songs...and never to abruptly...

Which breings me to my second point...Jacksonville is...

2 hrs from Orlando and the hoodest of clubs plays NY hip hop all though the night to compliment the SOUTHERN hood music....

Daytona is 45 mins or so away and to compliment the booty and stick music they play some uptempo stuff usually the watered down pop music but still...

Tampa 2.5 to 3 hrs...tons of stick music northern music and southern of course...

Miami 5 hrs...well we know what they like...lol

the locals want southern all night, hood, and nothing new...

I play songs for months before I get any reaction in Jacksonville when the same song gets a huge pop anywhere else in the state...and most my local following is from out of towners...

ya but whats your opinion of playing the same music type as the club that your club is directly attached to...as in club a is 2 levels and holds 1500 people and club b is on the 2nd floor and holds mabye 500 people....does it make sense to play the same top 40 BS that the big club is playing and hold (as the manager states) 20% of whatever the larger club has

nah they were shot on my iphone but i had to keep moving it cause i couldnt see if i was gettin a picture, i had to keep movin the camera around to see where the light was good enough to get a good shot, also i would have it on something i wanted to get in the shot but it wouldnt look right or it wouldnt be at the right angle to see it the whole thing or whatever so i had to keep moving around. Plus walking while using a phone to record isnt the best way to get a steady picture.

I havent used the video recorder on my phone enough, i always record one way then when i get the video later itll be all flipped, usually i just edit the video but i didnt have the time to do it with these

WOW, i know the weekends not over but i had to give you guys the breaking news. I must be doing SOMETHING right at my ne spot. I got a call on wed saying that this spot has a private function (some promoter or a historically black frat (i think it was the ques) rents out the club and brings in their own dj for the night) the owner told me i had the night off but kinda hinted that i should swing by, saying the last dj would always come by and kick it in case they needed anything and she would give me an free bar tab to show up. So im like fuck it ill go grab a few drinks and get to know the staff a bit better. Well i show up and theres a ton of people and noones dancing. I dont like to talk bad about DJs sets but the guys spinnin was keeping the energy REALLY low playing mostly 90s RnB and smooth tracks. The music wasnt bad but there wasnt any life to it, also he was doing videos and he must have DLed them off youtube or something cause none of the words were matching the mouth movments on the video. So im just hangin out drinkin helpin out with odds and ends when the dj from downstairs comes up and were shootin the shit and hes givin me some tips on runnin a night. Well finally im ready to head out, i walk around the corner and the owner comes running over saying that the dj playing sucked and she wanted me to start playing. I thought she was playing at 1st but she told me people were complaining because "the dj last week was better" and "their gonna come back tomarow when the other dj is here" she had asked him to switch up the music cause the crowd wasnt diggin it and he said "fuck this crowd they dont wanna dance they just wanna sit there" so the owner told him he had 1 more hour and he was off, he told her he only wanted to do a half hour and she told him to just go ahead and get his shit and go. I didnt have my laptop with me (not leavin home without that anymore) so i had to ghetto up a set by playing tracks off her limewire and youtube lol........2 tracks in i had the dancefloor PACKED. I dug around in their computer and .........i cant belive im admitting this....found a copy of tracktor pro, i had never used this software before but it wasnt to bad, the sync button is a lifesaver when you don have any headphones to preview the music.....i enjoy SL a ton more but that wasnt a bad backup. So i ended up gettin paid on my night off!! She also said their not doin any more busniess with the other dj and if the promo company wants to throw partys there their gonna need to book me. It was a crazy awkward feeling djing on this computer while the dj who just got fired packed up his shit behind me. Im glad i was there though cause there were a few odds and ends of equipment his boy tried to pack up that i had to point out that it was mine and to put it the hell down (minor shit laptop stande fog juice ect ect)

Since it wasnt my computer i didnt really do a "set" i was mostly just taking requests and to my dismay i had a conversation with the owner about the club direction and she envisions the club being a request oriented club (IIKKKK GAG) she said she wants me to mix and build energy but to be really into requests......im not sure how well thats gonna go, when she started tellin people to make requests i started getting requests to go in 10 different dirrections at once and the requesters are getting big on this play it now shit....i let it roll since i wasnt even really mixing but tonight should be intereting

For those keeping score heres how the weekend went. Got a call around 4 fri afternoon saying there was a big event goinon downtown so she needed me to come in an hour earlier, i came in and set up, peeped the crowd and noticed it was mostly older people (not a huge crowd but there were a few moms there ready to hit the dancefloor) I started up and started runnin through some older rock and 80s stuff and had all the soccer moms groovin, owner even came up to tell me i was doin a great job pickin tracks for em. About an hour of this went by before i kinda started sweatin a bit. I though i was pretty good on my older track selection but i really didnt realise how little I really had since usually i just use those tracks as odd sprinkles on a set....lesson learned that i need to step my old school game up and more importantly that i really need to get down to work on organising my crates, i was def having issues thinkin and findin which song to play next since 80s and pre 80s really arent my fortay. That kinda had me down a bit for the rest of the night cause i really feel like with more prep work i could have kept that crowd in there a much longer time.

Sat night went better though, i arrived to set up to find out there was a sorority formal that night who had hired a band so i was told to just hang out and chill while they finished. I went downstairs to our other club to kick it with my homeboy who DJs there. The club had JUST opened for the night (staff was still doin opening prep work), i noticed he was sweatin a bit so i asked him what was up, apparently his external HD had gone out on him so he had to take it apart and had the drive and USB port sitting next to the clubs computer, it was reading the drive but SL wanst reading his files or crates, he was really panicing because his boss kept asking him to start playing but he couldnt pull it up. I told him to let me on and renamed his SL crates folder and imported his backup and WHAMMM everything was working again. dude was THRILLED and probably pretty damn happy that he put in a good word for me to get the job upstairs. After that i chilled for about 15 minutes talkin to him when i got a txt from my boss upstairs, i went up to find that after 20 minutes the sorority decided the band sucked and wanted dance music so i ended up having to play songs off pandora\youtube again so the girls could dance (the band had a massive amount of equipment that took 3 hours to set up taking up the stage and only played for 20 minutes OUCH!!!) After the sorority left the band packed their shit up and i set all my gear up and started playing.

In my personal opinion im def getting better every weekend at reading the crowd and contolling my dancefloor. Im having the same prob keeping people in my area since its not the prime spot but this weekend i was able to keep prob double the people in my area double the time. I had a packed dancefloor for about 2 hours which was great though there were a few points where i feel i did manage to kill the floor on accident, not positive if it was something i did but i feel it was.

All in all i think the gigs goin well, the bar doubled the money they made at the bar last sat, and the owner was talkin to me about how i need to work with her to rework the DJ booth so i can use the booth with my equipment instead of the table ive been using, which is a good sign i think. Other highlights include a dude who came up to me early in the night and immediatley asked how much id charge him to fill his external with all my music cause he was a dj too and didnt have much music, i told him i wouldnt do that and he told me hed make sure i was payed properly, i told him no again and he got PISSED and started barkin about how I fucked up cause he woulda payed me at least $25 a track, i told him fine he couldnt afford my library on that and went into super "i GOT money mode" and started goin on about this barber shop he owns and how im turnin down makin a ton of money not hookin him up......ya whatever dude. Another was this girl who came up there with her friends, i guess she thought she was makin fun of the music cause she was doin this dance that looked like what youd do if you were to make fun of a raver.....except i was playing boom boom pow, then when i mixed to the next song she began booing and giving the thumbs down...then she proceeded to climb on a couch and began trying to climb into this potted plant that was next to the couch, i asked my friend to go find out if she was handicapped of something but before he could stop laughing she was passed out in the plant with her friends trying to wake her up. Later right before close i was playing to the 5 or 6 people left in there and they were diggin the song i was playing so i was like cool ill let it play, i let it play all the way through before i mixed out and a few of them looked at me like WTF WE LIKE THAT SONG...which was odd because the song was over i didnt quick mix it or anything, i thought that was pretty odd.


I havent really been getting to many requests...thank god...and the ones i have been getting have been asked really respectfully, though i have devised a new method of handling ones i dont like i acutually discovered a cool new method of handling requests last weekend...make them think the next song your gonna play is THEIR idea. I would be playing a song and lets say i had Plies "Becky" cued up. Girl comes up and says

Maybe it's harder to pull in clients into your area because according to your stories you play every genre of music (or so it seems like it).

This might be holding you back from building a 'following' since on any given fri/sat night you could be playing rock/rap/oldies/pop/polka etc. Most DJs that build a following and build up a residency do it by sticking to a certain few genres.

I know you have had all sorts of people roll through from different ages and different backgrounds and you are trying to please everyone that comes through, but perhaps this isn't the best way to go about getting people to come and stay at your gig. Maybe talk to the owner about this and what she thinks?

You may be right but heres how i kinda see the situation

The owner likes that i play that range since the crowd that comes in there varies but i dont think thats the issue per se, I play it pretty safe as to when i choose to push the envelope, the spot attracts an older crowd early on because its above\part of a really nice restraunt but as the night goes on and people start comming through i do rein in a good bit and play whats kinda expected. So to be honest my sets really arent that out of the box, ill let it rip and play some off the wall fun stuff when theres noone there or just a few people who are down to have some fun but when its game time and people are commin through i do play it kinda safe, and over the weeks ive noticed my safer sets have worked the best


I think the biggest part of the problem IMO is location, see to get into my spot from the main downtown area you have to come up this staircase from the street above the restraunt that most people have no idea leads to a club, theres no signs or anything like that that really get someones attn to go oh theres a club up there lets check it out, ive verified this because the clubs hired a few girls (my GF included lol) to go out to the street and recruit people to come in (its a downtown area and all the clubs\bars are on 1 street so theres alot of foot traffic). The issue we run into there though is when people DO come up they explore around and find that by walking through a doorway theres a much larger club were there tends to be more people, since my lil area is kinda a small room and since theres no crowd to speak of its easier for jon Q public to stroll over there were the real action is. While the people in the club next door really have to go out of there way to find their way into my area, that larger club has its entrance on the ground floor where the bar and dancefloor is, to get to my area they have to go upstairs away from the dancefloor, past all the pooltables into an unmarked door, past the bathrooms down a hall and around a corner before they get to it and when they do the dont see anyone there so they dont stay

Thats kinda why i was hopin the splash of cross genre works, i was kickin it with the redident DJ from downstairs and we were discussing how almost everyone in mobile is a sheep..therefor his boss has him limited to only sheep music, he cant really stray to far or he gets bitched at. So playing what i know my area wants prob wont grow a big crowd cause its what hes playing in the next area and hes got a corwd thats there and its a MUCH larger area. so its kinda impotant to add a lil something to what im doing to try to develop my own space, in his word "have some fun and play shit that he isnt aloud to play"


The real bitch is i HAD a pretty big following from my breakbeat parties but one of the dudes i was doin those partys with opened his own club on the other side of town so most of my audience goes there as he as owner has more ability to cater to them speciffically (free vip free bottle big name area EDM djs ect). I dont think his club will sustain though cause my crowd isnt isnt exactly made of big money spenders and noone but the few EDM heads of the area go there.

I think im going to make a better video of the land layout of the area so you can get a feel of what im dealing with protionally.

EXACTLY, thats exactly what i was thinking, ive been brainstorming of different special events we can throw to get some people in there, it may be smaller but my areas alot chiller and nicer so i thnk there IS a crowd that would love to come chill up there they just gotta see it. So funny to get categorized as a city in general lol.

Well of the 3 main clubs in Daytona, one of them has a 40/20 rule (40 mins of dance for every 20 mins of hip hop (top 40 hip hop, no plies, bedrock, etc)... That club owns the other club on the same block (same 40/20 rule).

The one I work at has no rules. Problem is, it's exactly the opposite of the other 2 clubs... If you play house or dance, you might as well have pulled the fire alarm. All hood pretty much. Plies, Boosie, plus all the smaller regional artists down here (Papa Duck, etc)..

I think that's where you get the generalization, the one club is all the uptempo stuff, the other clubs are all the hood stuff.

Ahhh Paint parties. Nothing like having a bunch of drunk / trippin / rolling girls taking all their clothes off. The only thing I don't like is no matter how much you cover up with tarps and drop cloths, you will still have glowing paint in some very strange places (I noticed specks of paint on the video screen that's 15+ feet from the floor)... And then some dumb chick decided to "paint the dj" but missed and we had to clean a streak of paint off the CDJ-1000...

I can't believe nobody mentioned foam parties... We've had 6 paint parties, and 1 foam party.. and there were more people at the foam party than any of the 6 paint parties (we had probably 1500 turn out for foam, and maybe 500 at best for paint).

Sounds like that door to the other club needs to be a one way door. Why are they letting customers leave through that door into a competitors venue? Once they are in your space the only way out should be to the street. Should be a teeeeeny cover to come from the other club into your smaller more posh VIP space once the restaurant crowd is gone. Two ways in, 1 way out.

They need to do a few things.. One trick.. No re-entry. Charge a cover (provided they can't see how dead it is from the door), so there's a "cost" of leaving.

Another thing, if there's any high end universities in your area, one small place I know hosts an party just for students of that college (in this case it's Stetson University), and you have to have a student ID before 12, and after 12 they let locals and others in (with a fairly hefty cover).

It's a double trick. First you get these college kids who think they're the ish an exclusive party, but you also get the locals who want to come because it is an exclusive party and are willing to pay a cover. Something like this sounds like the ticket for a back room VIP venue...

Man, you need to be doin' something that the OTHER club isn't....Point blank.

Definatley good ideas, and i totally agree with them but i know shes not gonna go for it, this is the same spot that was gonna charge a cover to pay me with when i spun there on new years eve but backed out of the cover cause it wasnt packed at like 10. A cover scares this woman to death because she thinks most of her crowd are people who wander over from next door and she thinks having to pay again once youve already paid to get in 1 club would scare people off, and if they get scared off they have noone to sell alchohol too.

I think the biggest hinderance is the lack os signs that distinguish us as a busniess. Obviously theres no sign saying hey this way to the ultra lounge in out competitors section, but from the street theres also no sign and the club itself dosent look like a busniess at all it looks like your normal upstairs downtown loft\apartment. If you were walking down the street you would have 0 idea this place was up here unless you saw the small shalkboard sign at the bottom of the staircase or if there happened to be people on the patio drinkin and you were brave enough to go explore and hope it wasnt a private house party. She said something about shes having some kind of issues with zoning or something and shes gotta jump through some hoops before shes aloud to put a sign up.

I don't post here alot, but I've been reading your thread constantly. I really feel for your situation, because I've had to deal with somewhat similar things myself.

I would advise first on really building your relationship with the owner, not saying don't recommend ideas right now, but maybe save some of the more "out there" or business model changing ones for when you guys really have built a solid understanding. It seems as she likes you and what you're doing, so just continue to build on that trust you have.

All ideas are mutually beneficial. She makes more money, and you keep your job (maybe a possibility of a raise as well) I would approach it in that manner, basically saying you really like it there and want an opportunity to what it grow etc etc.

It sounds like she has a few issues with some of the aspects of her business, and in my opinion, the no sign is really really a big one. You mentioned it looks like an upstairs loft, is there a possibility you could maybe put a lighted sign in the window? Many bars have neon signs and such advertising beer etc. and I have seen a few that has the venues name as well, this may be a way to skirt around signage issues she has for the time being.

I know she doesn't like the idea of cover, does the other club charge a cover? I don't remember from the thread, perhaps a small increase in cover stating you get 2 clubs in one type of deal, with a small cost added on to the other cover (if it charges) even a dollar or two, the other club keeps the normal cover and anything above would go to your club, hell to sweeten the deal, pay the other club a fee to collect it, like 50 cents for 2 dollars over and she gets $1.50.

No matter what it seems like you have the opportunity to do something different, so run with it. To be honest I'm not able to wrap my mind around the genre situation that's described (too many plays here but not here scenarios) but it is indeed possible to spoon feed the sheep while being just a tad different. In my current Saturday gig, I get to do just that, and I find it's even more fun to rock a smallish spot with 100 or so people, than a bigger room, even when you have the normal played everywhere stuff in rotation.

Thanks for postin, you hit the nail on the head 100% on all that, its all pretty much what im thinking too. Im doin my best to get in cool with the owner cause from my experience thats the key to keeping ANY job especially a fickle job like this one, im def not gonna tell her to change any policys but i do drop some opinions in conversation in the guise of "a bunch of my friends go to X and they Y they said they really liked it" but i also compliment her on the things i like and make it very clear i like the venue.

As far as signs right now she has a few lights up there that give it the hey theres a party up there atmosphere but adding some more would probably help a bit. I dout well get much help from our attached competitors, we ran the idea of raising the cover to cover us both for our new years eve party and they were not havin it one bit, also theyve been makin new rules to kinda handicap\seperate us, since ive started hes closed his upper level on slow nights and made it a VIP area, and hes instituted a policy where the door between the 2 clubs stays closed until midnight



this is exactly how im looking at it, im really happy about the situation cause if i can build it, itll be what I want it to be instead of inheriting someone elses night and having people already expecting some certian kind of night. The best nights ive had personally are the nights where theres not alot of people there (fridays in general in mobile are dead), on these nights i just have a blast and really push the envelope and try new things, another cool thing about that is theres a pool table room i really cant see from the booth by the main door so ive had occasions where ill think noones there and ill break out into some scratch practice or try a live mashup or throw some rosck or old stuff and at the end of the night have people come up and say how awsome it was even though i didnt know people were listening lol

I think things will pick up steadily once the thrill of summer calms a bit, we have so many cities with awsome beaches near us (hour away in any direction but mobile dosent have any) that were losin alot of people to beach weekends.

My current dilema is the owner dosent think that setup looks very professional and wants me to figure out a way to incorporate my setup into their "booth"(to the left of where you see that table) it may be a bit of a bitch cause its a poorly put together booth that dosent really give me the room i need for the tables (since they historically have just had laptop heros dj there)

take some video of the layout of both clubs/lounge and maybe the outside so forum members can get a better picture of how your lounge is situated. Maybe start from the outside and walk your up to the lounge from the outside so we can see what patrons see and how they get to your residency.

LOL, acutually it was an interesting weekend, i didnt get there early enough to film like i said i would though. Fir night was what ill consider as my 1st real sucessful night. I got there to set up and there were several people already there (we do a free crawfish thing on fri nights apparently) so ince i had set up i decided to runthings a lil different and started throwin down on a rock set, about 15 minnutes into that 2 dudes who didnt look like rock fans come running up, i figured their about to bitch and ask for some hiphop but gave me props and asked for some of that linkin park jayz stuff, so i did some of that then when a younger group came in i worked my way into some hipper new\fresh hiphop\rap. I think they were on their way to the club next door but i used some mic work to get them to stay. I got them dancein which made the club look kinda packed so when more people came in they stayed to see what was up there instead of just walkin through. By 12 am it was shoulder to shoulder packed on the dancefloor and the party was in full swing. I went to use the bathroom and checked on the other club and it was DEAD, i was REALLY impressed with myself, also it made me feel pretty good because typically my area kinda self segregates itself, if a group of preppy white clubbers see a bunch of black clubbers they keep on goin, but i kept goin back and forth between hood music and dance music and managed to keep both crowds in their partying together which isnt something that happens every day in mobile. The party was PACKED until about 4am (2 hours after our normal closing time), and when the owner finally told me to cut it off people were real upset that i had to stop.

Whats funney is EVERYONE in there was having a blast and i got soooo many compliments on my DJing, but the next day i was talkin to one of my homeboys and he mentioned that he got into it with a DJ from outta town who was in there tellin people I sucked and I was wack and all my mixes were off beat, ill be the first to tell you my set was by no means perfect, there were a few tracks that could have been mixed tighter, a few vids courtesey of 8thwonder with odd number intros, and i learned how difficult it is to mix accuratley on turntables which are on a shaky card table when you have 5 girls grabbing the table for support as they booty shake for the crowd, but all in all i feel like i did a pretty good job and the unknowing public seemed to be really enjoying themselves. So i dont know if i really wasnt doing as well as i thought or if it is just that thing where when a DJs in the audience they pick apart the dj whos playings set. I know i shouldnt let it get to me but when i got there on sat it was kinda eating away at the confidence that was built the night before.

When i got there sat i was pretty hyped thinking since there were that many people there on a dead night then sat should be on and poppin. The bartenders homeboy came up there early, apparently hes a scratch dj (the bartender talked to me about him the night before and told me he was bringin his boy and hed prob talk shop with me but to not get nervous cause hes got his own thing goin on as a promoter and isnt tryna steal my residency ), Dude was pretty damn cool to talk too (no homo) and he showed me a few tips on scratching and confirmed my suspicions that i need to readjust my innofader to have less cut on the gap.

As far as the night itself went it was pretty dissappointing, we never got the big crowd i thought we would, as most of the nights have gone people would come in and see there wasnt a crowd and make their way to the main club. I was doin all i could to keep them there but i only have about 20 seconds to get them to change their mind about just walking through. There was a couple big groups that came up there and i held them up there pretty well and they seemed to enjoy themselves but i was hoping for more as the other club was PACKED. The DJ who was up there kickin it with me told me he thought i was pretty good and liked the set so i guess the music was ok, though i gotta admit towards the end of the night i got a bit fustrated and kinda started payin more attn to BSin with him about DJin and less on my mixes, gotta learn how to balance the 2 because where my "booth" is located is pretty much right where everyone is so LOTS of people come up there and try to conversate

I had some drinks with the owner after the show just seein how everything is going and she told me she thinks im doin great and that she realises its kinda difficult especially for a "rookie" dj (being my 1st full time residency) seeing as theres such a popular club attached to my area. She told me she thinks im doin damn good and likes that im the only DJ in mobile that can switch genres to suit my crowd the way i do and she wants to see me do more of that early on like i did fri night (more rock and 80s ealry on) which is the same thing i was thinking since its usually the restraunt leftover crowd early on


Funney moments of the weekend
Had a girl request "my chick bad" i told her i played it earlier and i may play it again later, she stood there for like 6 tracks each one asking me if i would play it next, then she looks over and realises the dude near the booth was my homeboy so she brings him up and tells me that was her best friend since like the 2nd grade......then asks me if ill play her song, i tell her no. Then she grabs this other hot chick and introduces me to her and then says the other chick wants to hear "my chick bad" (the other chick asked me what i was gonna play next, i told her "ima transform ya" and she goes YES I LOVE THAT SONG and left lol) then I mentioned my GF and she claims she knows her and they go way back.....then can you play my song now. FInally i get sick of it and drop her song, i play it and realise shes not paying att, after i mix out she comes back up and goes "WHEN ARE YOU GONNA PLAY MY SONG", when i told her i JUST played it she asks me to play it again. I tell her no way in hell, then she goes to request another song and i tell her her damn request privliges are revoked. My boy laughed and took her outside lol.


A chick who was celebrating her 22nd Bday told me i was one of her fave DJs and her dream in life is to own a multimillion dollar club, her goal is to have it open by the time shes 35 and she made me promise that when it opens ill be the DJ

Had a girl literally walk in the door walk STRAIGHT to the dj booth and say "buy me a drink", i asked if she wanted to hear the song by akon and she goes no i used to work here go buy me a drink. I laughed at her and told her to go get me a sandwich cause i DO work there.

ya i dont have a MIDI mixer so i use a korg kontrol to control all the VSL functions, it def limits my performance with the videos though so im looking to upgrading my mixer to a midi capable mixer as soon as my financial situation can allow it

pretty cut an dry weekend, had another blast on fri, packed till 4am (closing time at 3 lol) Whats been helping us is the adjoining club has been having latin\oldschool nights booked on fri nights which has been driving a lot of traffic our way. Sat wasnt bad but we had a band that was scheduled to play for a bday function from 8 to 11 but the party didn't start till 10ish so they didn't get off stage until about 1am, add in the 20+ minutes it took for them to unpack and me to set up and a good bit of the crowd had moved along. The crowd that was there all seemed to have a great time though . Im beginning to have returning customers, a few gils from last weekend came back and told me this is their new spot so its a start.

Request highlight of the weekend, 5 asian girls stroll up there and ask where the old (asian) dj was, i told them i was the new dj and they get pissy. They ask for "good music" i ask them to be more speciffic and they tell me they want to hear some "black music" there was 2 black girls who are repeat customers dancin next to the booth while im playing "rock the casbah" i ask them what they wanted to hear and they tell me that what i was playing was awesome, i tell the asian girls the black girls are lovin this music so this is obviously "black music" lol they got pissed and left but the black girls got 3 times crunker saying "what kinda shit is that black people listen to EVERYTHING" lol

i tried to record some of the night itself (theres a few vids in the youtube link but you cant see much) but my iphone wasnt really holdin up well in the lighting conditions. I gonna try to bring my GFs camera and figure out a good place to set it up to get a good view of whats goin on. Ive also set up soundforge on the booths desktop computer so i can record the music.

lol This weekend went pretty well, cut and dry mostly, im def feeling more comfortable with reading my crowds and adapting. I got a good idea of what works with whom and what certian groups are expecting.

Fri was slower than it has been for the last few friday nights but that was all around, our brother club and the st were all dead too so it wasnt just me. Towards the end of the night we had a decent size group come in and stay and 1 group who i couldnt wait to get rid of, yes ladies and gentlemen, THAT GIRL, made an apperance at my club last fri, you know THAT GIRL who is annoying as fuck and gave all the material for the worst request thread. It was a group of 3 blonde girls and 3 poloed out DBag dudes. One girl was cool and immediatley took to dancing, another came up drunk as fuck leans all over my laptop and asks what all i have on my laptop cause she didnt like that song, she requested some nikki minage so im like sure whatever and mix into that massive track she has, the girl runs back to the dj booth yelling "I SAID NIKKI MINAGE" i tell her this IS nikki minage and she goes no GOOD songs like # 4 on the album and # 12 from some mixtape ect ect. I tell her i dont have the album and either way im only doin videos so either come up with something else or dance. About 3 songs later she comes back waving her drink all around my equipment screaming.."PLAY NIKKI MINAGE I WANNA HEAR NIKKI MINAGE" i tell her to get her drink away from my equipment and of course she slurrs out "om not gonna mess up your damn equipment so play nikki minage", i look at her friend guy friends like come get this bitch away from me and they did, while their pulling her away shes screamin "NO THIS DJ DOSENT KNOW SHIT I KNOW WHAT GIRLS WANNA DANCE TOO" (all while her friends are dancing on the dancefloor), then another one of her friends comes up and tells me "Can you play something else" i asked her what and she replied "I wanna hear something FUN"....i tell her I have no idea what she means since "fun" can be anything from soulja boy to the cupid shuffle to grils just wanna have fun ect ect. i ask her to give me a song example and ill move in that direction. At this point she literally stands there for (from the moment i started timing) 25 minutes going ummmmm ummmmm ummm how about ummmmmmmmm ahh ummm. It was so obvious my 2 homeboys started making fun of her singing a little song with ummmm ah ummm as the lyrics. At this point drunky mgee blonde bitch comes back and starts creaming for nikki minage again, then starts asking for rihanna rude boy, i explain to her agin to A) get her hands of my damn laptop cause its not there to be used as a damn drunk bitch handle bar B) I dont have any more nikki minage songs i played allt he vids shes in already and Rhianna is on my list of artists i cant play tracks by. She starts getting beligerant again about how i suck and cant make people dance so i look her dead in the eye and scratch into boom boom pow and the bitch sprints to the dancefloor to dance with her friends. I look at my the dude who was in the booth (i didnt know him but he was friends with my boy) and sarcastically say "wow ya i really suck i just about made her break her ankles getting to the dancefloor" he thought i was being serious and was like dude fuck that bitch your bad ass lol. A litle later this dude comes up and my girl tells me he can rap and that i should let him on the mic (i figured she knew him so it was ok but i found out later he had no clue who he was he was just outside talkin about a contest he won at a club down the street) so i said fuck it and threw on an instrumental and let him go. Dude was pretty nice and the crowd was feelin him, i was helpin out droppin the beat out and doing a little scratching on the side. He freestyled non stop for about 4 beats and about 15 minutes before i had to cut him off.....had to wrestle the damn mic outta his hand. Also found out the beamer benz and bently song is a hood magnet in my area, i played it and the security guard at the door said about every black dude for about 3 streets came in lol , i counted at least 10 at the door, that is a powerful beat. Once again the party was supposed to be over at like 2:30 it ended at 4

Sat night was VERY VERY interesting. From the moment i turned the music on a HUGE crowd came in and packed the place. It was an older crowd who apparently were doing some run for cancer type event where they ran across the state of Al and ended up in mobile, they were older and from all over the country so i gotta really have fun, i was playing all the 80s and 90s cheese music rock bands country the whole 9 yeards and the dj from downstairs acutually came up to tell me good job cause at about 11 they were STILL dead and we were throwin down HARD. I was doin GREAT but then ran into a string of unfortunate events, 1st mistake i made was deviating from what was working, i was playing all the old school fun music ice ice baby en vouge poisin ect ect and i was also playing some lady gaga and bayonce (on request) so i knew they liked radio hits. Well my girl suggested i play something dancier (of course since shes a dancer there) so i played a couple newer radio dance hits like tao cruz and lost a bunch of them. It was kinda an experiment cause i know theres 2 types of older crowds the old heads who liek what they know and then theres the old heads who wanna act like their still hip with the new music....this was the latter of the 2 so i immediatley went back to cheese party stuff and got most of em back. Then a lady came up and told me i was doing awsome and gave me $40 to play these 2 songs i didnt have, i had already gotten several requests for the 2 songs so obviously the group liked them so i loaded the song up on youtube (my gear goes through a seperat mixer and that mixer has a channel hooked up to the clubs PCs just in case someone requests something i dont have, she pushes that this is a request heavy club so most requests i have to take so if i dont have it she wants me to play it off youtube or grab it off "a search engine i wont name"), so i pull it up on youtube and its loading slow as hell, soemthing was slowing the clubs internet down so i mixed 3 songs and it only had a minute of the song downloaded.....the lady came back about 4 times asking when i was gonna play it and i kept tellin her it was downloading...then one of my "boys" came up and started asking if he could spin (ya how ballsy is he) i kept telling him no, even used the excuse the manager told me nooone else could spin but he was on my ass about it, then one of my boys from out of town came up and started arguin with that dude and they kept tryina pull me in it, so im trying to ignore all 3 of em and i think ok im not playin the whole song anyway ill just play whats loaded, i start playing the song off youtube and the crowd LOVES it........until i find out the video on YT wast mastered right and the volume begins randomly spiking and droppin KILLIN the vibe so i quick mix out and go to pull the other song she wanted (i have an extra pair of headphones to preview the track) the ladt who paid me starts bitching about the song not finishing and the next song isnt loading for shit, she tells me she needs to hear it now cause their ready to leave and i explain to her that its not loadin right i cant do anything about it but since i DID play her 1st song that killed my vibe id give her half the 40 back since she didnt get her other song, she told me to just keep it and that the rest of my set was awsome so i deserved it. I spent waaaayyyy to much time on all that and really lost my rythem, i played for that group a while longer ebfore they headed out at about 1. For the rest of the night most of the crowd was hangin out on the balcony and near the doors windows because the owner didnt have the ACon, it felt like 100 degrees in there but when you walked outside it was perfect weather, and i know it wasnt the djing cause theres speakers out there too lol. Then one of our amps overheated, an issue i think was caused by a new light we put in that was creating mad heat right near the cooling fan of the amp, so we lost music for about 15 minutes. The rest of the night was pretty slow with on and off crowds, our other club was packed and it was one of those nights where it would have been hard to compete with em.

When that club closed i was still playing and the DJ from downstairs and 2 djs from other clubs all came to my spot to hang out, club was closed but the owner lives there and dosent care so were were all just takin turns practicin some scratches, they were givin me some scratch pointers, bullshitted about what some of the other djs\clubs ect are doin kinda caught up on some dj gossip ect, until about 8 am when the owner took us all to the restraunt downstaris to get us some breakfast......i found out as an amployee i get a 50% discount there and its one of the best restraunts in mobile SCORE!! lol, breakfast was AWSOME!!!!!

I don't even have to go clubbing because I vicariously do it through this thread.

For real though, Bez I have read all your stories on here bro, and I can tell you we all have dealt with all the bullshit you have spoken of at one point in time. Last year I was at the tail end of my residency at this hood-rat infested club here in Washington, and I was playing to a large group of people 3-400 or so, and I had the dance floor freakin packed, it had been a slow-start, but I finally had them them where I wanted them...on the dancefloor. This d-bag comes up and requests the most assinine song you can think of to have me play...some metal bullshit I cant think of right now..anyway so I looked straight at him and said "Are you serious?" He was really fucked up, and I told him sorry no way in hell. So he gets off the dj booth, and goes back to his table. I throw down a couple more tracks, and here comes D-Bag again, and he says "where is my song?" I looked straight at him, and said "on your ipod in your car!" "I am not playing metal tonight nor will I ever be." So he goes back to his table.....not ten minutes later he comes back up..."wheres my song?" Finally I had enough, and said" Okay here it is"....at which I promptly dropped a remix of I kissed a girl....he was so fucking pissed he knocked both of my externals on the ground off my dj stand and took off running out the door, needless to say the bouncer caught him with a clothesline half way down the stairs, and drug him out by his feet, bouncing his head off each stair out the door. Thankfully my shit didn't get broken, but I tell you what fucking people have no idea at how much work goes into doing what all of us in here do, between researching trax, practicing our sets, and buying, and maintaining our expensive equip, if they only had half a goddamn clue.

nah the residencys really hit its stride. I have return customers now and were getting really good crowds on both night i play, its really building. Im also getting offers to do mobile gigs for people and im playing a memorial day event in the big club we're attached to. Its turned into what most of the people on here experience on a weekly basis so i dont want to bore people with the typical stories. One thing I will say is i retract any comments ive said in the past about understanding people who play for free or for bar tabs. That made sense to me when i was doing like 1 gig a month, now that is a every fri and sat thing i cannot understand why anyone would play for cheap, this shit is alot of hard work, im exausted after every weekend and enjoying playing my sat night set is kinda diffcult because i put so much energy into my fri night set.

If your still interested in the storys, last sat i had a dude come in and continuly ask for requests, after about 4 i started to blow him off and he started tellin me he was gonna give me $100 when the night was over so i kinda catered to him. After we closed dude was nowhere to be found. Then last fri night comes around and he shows up with more requests. I gave him the crazy look like youve got to be kidding me and he acted like he forgot, then came back and hit me with $80 for playing his requests, which was pretty cool. This same dude comes in sat night (which was slow cause there was a concert in town) and he hits me with another $50 and buys a bottle of goose from the bar. SInce this guy is probably the 1st and last guy to ever buy a bottle and it was a slow night i was basically just playing all the shit he asked for...not very entertaining for me but oh well.

Im required to play any requests that come through and basically to get over any artistic integrity i may have had ive made my mind up that im not even a DJ in this club, im an entertainer, because most of the things i have to do to work there go against most of the rules that DJs here swear by, i have to talk on the mic alot (like at least once every 2 songs) i have to take all requests no matter how lame (i have the leeway to put them off till later but i really dont get to many requests and the ones i do get are usually really respectful of what im doing). Since ive adopted the im an entertainer mindset i think its helped me out because it relieves alot of the pressure i was putting on myself. Also im getting alot more comfortable with my position there and more comfortable with song selection and knowing what to play and when and learning how valuable that is even over prestine mixing.

Also theres really no spotlight stealing, were a team, she helps bring people in and i keep people there. Cant ask for more than that!!

ya, pretty much all of my harddrive is classic hiphop, rap, pop music, down south stuff, underground, breakbeats, house, and drum and bass. Plus there were alot of albums on there that i recently cleaned out....now that i have a residency im finally realising that albums are worthless in a club setting for the most part, since ive gotten into video anyway (up to 800gigs of video) ive been cleaning up the music folders so im down to about 300 gigs of just music (on my gig laptop not on my desktops).

To put it in perspective i have 25 gigs of whitelabel tracks alone also I have every whitelabel track thats been put out in the last 5 years, every track from DMS wax, a majority of the tracks that were on breakbeatalliance and the now extinct clubmusic online, and every track from 8th wonder. Plus when it comes to EDM i havd tons of different remixes of the same songs.

I may acutually have more than i know, i REALLY REALLY REALLY need to get down to busniess with my crates. If i really went through and made like an 80s crate im sure i would be able to run through a longer set. Thing about 80s music to me though is i NEVER listened to it, except for real hiphop. I never listened to rock at all until somewhat recently. To me all of that was something you sprinkle in your set for cheese effect, so its hard for me to tell which tracks from those genres are cheesy now because they used to be hot and cheesy because its always been cheesey

So what happened this past Friday and Sat?

Hummm I don really remember...? Big crowd. Had fun. That's just my perspective his is always different.

Had a pretty interesting weekend, fri and sat were pretty slow. We're still suffering from a pretty serious case of people not knowing were up there so its really hit or miss on how big the crowds are. Ive found that if were able to get a big group early on we have killer nights, the reason being all the people who either cut through or come up there and look tend to keep walking and not stay if they dont see anyone, reasonable enough but if even half of those looky looos stayed there would be a hell of a party. The one highlight from the weekend was at one point a lady came up and started chattin me up, then she asked for my card and contact info, i figured she was some lady who had a wedding coming up or something. She stayed up there and was talkin to me and i find out shes a rep from def jam. I just filed it under the BS cabinet in my brain and let her go on about all the artists she represents and how she liked how i played and was interested in me when shows come to the city. I brought it up to the owner and the downstairs waitress who apparently know her and apparently she wasnt BSing, she really works for def jam. Def networking potential there!!!!

Sun night i got invited to spin with the DJ from the big club downstairs. Poor guy has one of the worst situations and i def gained alot of respect for him for puttin up with it all and making everything go so well. 1st off we get there and he gets into an argument with the owner, apparently the owner wants him to stop bringing his external HD of videos and just put all his videos on the clubs computer.....YA RIGHT. Dudes smart enough to know that he paid for em so hes not leaving them on some clubs computer so the owner can replace him with someone who didnt pay for anything. He ended up telling the owner he would love to put everything on the owners computer......if he paid for all of the pools lol. So get up there and hes running 2 techs and a 57. Ive never used the 57 so i asked the dj to show me the ins and outs and the dude really didnt know how to use it, he ssat there for about 15 minutes trying to figure out the loops and cue groups then said he didnt use it but since i was opening i could figure it out before the crowd got there. I think that mixer is SUPER confusing but its just because i was trying to figure it out on the spot.......As you can probably guess I looked like an asshole more than one time by mixing in a song, finding my next song, loanding it, hitting cue1 and BAM playing song goes back to the begingin. Also doing video is alot trickier with this mixer for me because of the indipendant audio\video control i have with my set up. I had a minor but annoyin issue of not having a moniter, and in that club no speakers are anywhere near the booth or pointed in your direction. Also his setup had a HUGE delay when scratching quickly so i opened setting and saw he had the calibration waaaaay off, i messed with it and quickly learned that it wasnt off the needles were just shit. Basically im just titty spoiled on my own setup.

So anyways I banged out an opening set, it ended up being pretty funney because the resident and the other DJ who were playing that night were so busy handing out their new mix and promoting with the radio station they completley lost track of time. I was being a good opener and not playing any bangers, sticking mainly with "jiggy" new stuff people dont know and some older hot stuff. I could see all the toes in the crowd tapping even though it was some ULTRA sloppy mixing as i was getting used to the setup, at after midnight (show ends at 3)we started getting a pretty big size crowd so i started picking up the heat a bit and the resident came up to BS with me, i told him sorry for gettin into the good stuff but its kinda gettin into peak time, the resident looked at me funney and asked what time it was and freaked out because he didnt realise it was that late lol. He said he appreciated me openin right and settin him up to get on right, he hopped on and started killin it. He did great then the next DJ did great.

At about 2 Some local "rapper" showed up to record a music video. I can tell it was kinda bobo because I recognised the cameraman as a guy who works at the mall. He did a few songs that noone was feeling and took up alot of time. The resident then told em to hop back on and i was KILLN it, had the whole floor crunk. About 30 minutes in the resident said there were a few other djs he knew that had showed up and asked if i minded them gettin on. I told him no prob and wetn and chilled in the crowd and got ALOT of compliments on my 2nd set. After the show i was bullshittn with the 2 djs who played after me who told me they were realli impressed by my second set, we were jokin around and i was playing the, im the worst dj in the world role, and they were really impressed. Turns out their pretty big DJs in my city, the been spining for 30+ years and do ALOT of REALLY big events and they were really impressed about how humbile i was being. He said i impressed him to the point he wants to work with me some more and offered to copy his Terrabyte HD. I told him i care enough about my library not to copy it but if hed give me some names of some remixers (breaks) that id love to go out and find em myself. He was impressed by that and told me hed get up with me soon about doin some gigs. After that a promoter i used to work with durring my breakbeat partys approached me and said hes been hearing alot about me again and wants to work with me again. Hes throwin a multidj party at another club in the area and asked me to drop in and do a set either before i go into my residency or after im off (paid and advertised of course). So all and all i did alot of good networking this weekend.

Another interesting story from this weekend took place outside the club. One of my DJ "friends" is a super cocky dude who i know talks shit about everyone behind their backs and isnt really well liked in our circle. Well i wake up sunday morning and i have a missed call and a voicemail. I listen to the voicemail and apparently he didnt call me, it was an accident and he ended up leaving a 25 minute long voicemail talkin shit about me and every other DJ in mobile to one of his friends. Now mind you this guys dosent have a residency or own equipment but i have him on tape saying hes better than all of the other DJs, hes better than big named DJs, how every dj int he city is scared of him ect ect. So i hooked up my iphone headphone out to audacuity, EQed the recording so it sounds great and cut it up into scratch samples, then shot the audio to a friend of mine who i knew would appreciate it who shot it to some of his friends who have residencies (all of these people mentioned by name whose names were involved )who acutually do production. They took the audio and are now making dance remixes to the track. Im failry sure dude has no idea that he left that voicemail as the recording stopped recording waaaaayy before he was done talkin.

Weekend Roundup

Anyone who was following my www.twitter.com knows that this was a crazy weeeknd. I got my new odessey blacklabel coffin and xstand and they are AWSOME. Now im able to have all my equipment behind the booth and i was able to get rid of the big ass table i was using which opened up more stage space. It looks and feels 100Xs more professional and its a much better feel while im performing, i LOVE it!!!! Very happy with my purchase.

Fri night was pretty slow

Sat night we were hosting a reunion for the class of 2000 so i had to come in early, i get there and before i even get in the door i hear the guy who was in charge of the party arguing with the owner because the venue smells "smokey", apparently they wanted the owner to tell the fri night crowd not to smoke so it wouldnt smell smokey durring their 2 hours rental on sat...FAIL lol. So i go in and set up, as usual while im setting up i play a mixtape through the computer, im scheduled to start at 8 and its a little past 7am im playing some DJ am while i set up, 5 minutes into the mixtape i get people comming up saying the music sucks and start giving me requests. I tell them im havent even started playing yet but ill play them when i start. After some more complaints i switch to a DJ Vice mix, and im still getting compaints and people sitting around literally screaming at me that the music sucks and they want to dance (at this time theres only like 15 people there). So i finally get set up and i go outside to use the phone because its still not time to start. When i get outside the guy running the party approaches me and tells me that its a class of 2000 reunion and they want me to play mostly stuff that was hot durring the later 90s, stuff like BG juvenile ect ect. I tell him i was class of 2000 too and name some artists off the tops of my head and we are on the same page. So i come back in and start the show at about 8.

I start going through a dope 90s set and about 20 minutes in i start getting people comming up to me saying the music sucks because its all old and they wanna hear new lil wayne gucci and ludacris. I explained to them that we were startin off with 90s (as i was told by the people in charge) and i was gonna work my way into new stuff as the night goes on. They litrerally walked away pissed and pulled up chairs and starred at me with pissed off looks and came up after every song asking for how low (mind you its like 8:30 and theres now mabye 25 people there). Eventually i said fuck it and started playing newer stuff, not prime time stuff yet because it was still early and still noone was there and people were STILL bitching. At this point i went to the bar to grab a drink and the bartender was pissed because apparently in the 3 hours that these people had been there not 1 person had bought an alchoholic drinkm, they were only getting sodas and water because that came free with the price of renting the venue, and not a single person had tipped the bartender.

So i get my drink and go back to the tables and people are still sittin around not even talking to each other just starrin at me except for 1 girl who was dancin her ass off. A few more people showed up so i decided to say fuck it and get into it, so i played the cupid shuffle, in my 5 years of DJing iive never had a slide\line dance fail me.....until that night. I play it and they all just sit there, determined to get these people off their asses i hop on the mic and yell "I know at leas tone of you knows this dance dont be scared"...nothing....back on the mic "Look i was in the class off 2000 and the class i remember wasnt scared of getting on the dancefloor, the class i rememebr knew how to have a good time!!!" so they all get up, do the cupid shuffle with these looks on their faces like they were doing so begrudgingly and as soon as they heard a new beat come in they ran back to their seats. So since i was in the higher BPMs and every one was bitching that they wanted to dance i tried some flo-rida, pitbull, black eyed peas ect. And people are still comming up bitching that they want to hear something they would dance to. I start askign people what THEY want to hear and noone would give me an answer, they would just say shit like "i dont know somethin GOOD" and walk away like damn children, then i started gettign people comming up and requestign just random shit, stuff from mixtapes and bootlegs, then they were taking things i said and flipping it to bitch to the guy running the party. For example one girl asked if i only played videos, i told her mostly so instead of asking for a song she went and told the party chairman that i said i only played videos so i wouldnt have anything shed want to hear.

So finally the head guy comes up and says noones happy with the music, so he lists off a few songs hes said people want to hear and they were all songs i had JUST played, so he said he was going to make a list....an hour goes by and he comes up with a piece of paper and says he talked to everyone there and heres the playlist they want to hear......the paper has 3 songs on it...he was gone an hour and he was only able to come up with 3 damn songs, Rich boy throw some Ds, stanky legg, and lil wayne roger that. Also at this point we were having issues becasue they had stopped getting drinks all together, and what they were doing was having 1 person get a drink, then like 3 people would get a cup of ice and they were splitting the damn drink so they wouldnt have to spend money.

By this time more people stared showing up and i went into my primetime mode and I got the place jumping, it was shoulder to shoulder wall to wall and everyone was on the dancefloor goin nuts EXCEPT for a few the people who were there bitching originally. I KNOW i was doing great because i had 2 DJs, one from my city and one from the carribean come up to me and tell me they were really impressed with what i was doing, and we all know that most djs just criticize other djs, so to have 2 djs tell me i was doing awsome really made me feel good.

Overall the people from that class kinda struck me as pathetic. It was a class of 2000 reunion, which means these people were all about 30ish, and they were btching when i was playing things like Biggy and r-kelly, but they were on the floor going ape shit doin the stanky legg, and the booty dew, and jumping up and down screaming the words to all the way turnt up. I mean really if your 30 at your 10 year reunion theres no damn reason to be stiffing the bartender and sharring drinks in the bathroom your supposed to be some grown ass people, so so so sad.

Bezzles night had a mobile dj feel to it but it happened at his residency so thats why i guess hes venting out soo much but bezzle this is the norm for mobile dj's especially with hecklers, cheapskates, drunk outta there minds type... it already passed so just focus on this weeks and simply move on... lol or else u will b one angry dj... lmfao

lol oh im over it, the crowd that came after them rocked so it dosent bring me down, it acutually ended up being one of my more successful nights. Even when that crowd was there i didnt feel to bad because it wasnt just me, the owner, the bartender, the security guy, and our "promoter" all had issues with them, they were just a shitty crowd. Only thing that did kinda dissappoint me was that my parents went to eat at the restraunt thats below where i spin at for their anniversary(its an AMAZING restraunt, delicious food, one of the better restraunts in mobile) and when they were done they popped up to say hey and have a few drinks and see what it is i do. My set was still great and they enjoyed checkin it out but it kinda sucked having them see me live for the 1st time and seeing a crowd just not diggin it.

Now I get the pleasure of having to show up to my gig on friday and force myself to not crush in that piece of shits skull because theres no way im risking something ive wanted this long and worked so hard to get over stupid shit like that.

As far as promoters comming an going hes the bartenders roomate so hell probably be sticking around for a minute, its kinda touch n go with how engrained he is with ownership too. My goal is to get the spot poppin on my own so that we just dont need him. Right now all he does to "promote" is walk around the st on fri and sat asking people to come to the club and putting fliers on cars, i would guess hes responsible for mabye 6 people a night comming up there. If i can just rock the fuckin spot so people will come to see ME hell be obsolete anyways. VERY VERY TRUE, thats where my head is at now, without having someone to divert my attn i can realy get on my hustle, im trying to find places to pick up nights that i can build, and networking to get some out of town gigs to really get my name out there. I know freejaying is a sin (hold on hold on put down the torches and let me finish) but the owner told me i can come in on any of the off nights and spin if i felt like it though she couldnt pay me for it, of course i told her no Now last night i was thinking theres is NOTHING to do in this city on tues and wed. Would it be worth my time to promote an off night party and do it for free to promote the spot to people who dont know about it so that we start building a fri and sat crowd?? Not a perminant thing but kinda an advertisment until the club builds a name since alot of people dont know about it and theres kinda designated places to go on thurs fri sat and sun.

I also came up with something i think may be genius.....ok we all know promoters are shady as fuck and this forums full of storys about promoters who get bedroom DJs with stardom in their eyes to do gigs for peanuts and sprites right...WELL how about we as DJs cut out the middle man and play that game. Ive noticed the clubs are always full of people who want to act like VIPs, has anyone ever considered playing them like promoters play DJs.......find some wanna be VIPs, theyll typically be in required dueshbag edd hardy uniform, and befriends them, talk to them when they show up mabye buy em a drink.......then tell them that your club dosent have a promoter and your trying to convince the owner that paying one is a good idea but the owner dosent believe you. Let you new "friend" know that you think if he started geting all his friends to come in and show a profit you can probably convince the owner to hire him and hed get paid PROPPER....let that run for a couple weeks then tell him its a no go with the owner

like i said fri nights are slow in my city to begin with so im already startin out at a disadvantage, then what really pulls people in are bands, the main people that go to clubs (and not bars) are mostly the 18 to 23 demographic, so since we dont have a cover and the 18-20 cant buy drinks anyway, AND we are attached to a larger club, we dont see big profits all to often. It also dosent help that since the big club has a name and a good consistant crowd they have great drik specials...an idea our owner is still pretty resistant too. But when we DO get a nice crowd it works out twice as well.....i think we ended up doing really well sat night.

if i we're you bezzle i'd charge for 18 and over, out here in cali Promoters/bar owners always do it they'd charge $10-$20 For 18 and over while 21 and over are free till 11 and $7 dollars after.. i'd suggest bring that up to the owner of your residency maybe you can take all of door since you'd be promoting the night and you can get rid of the promoter that got with your ex girl.. solves your problem and giving you more money in your pocket!! good luck to you bro!

Well it started out they were doing the promoting together, walkin around putting fliers on cars and talkin people into comming up there, and as time went on i noticed that they were ALWAYS walkin around together whenever i was spinnin. Then i started noticing little things like theyd be sitting at a table outside and id walk up and shed leave so they were never together while i was present. So she asked to go up there on one of my off nights and i went to help the downstairs DJ with some problems he was having with serato and they went off to go put fliers on cars. So when i was dont i went walkin around and couldnt find em. I was pretty pissed but didnt say anything about it, so that night we get home and she said she had to go call her friend, she was on the phone for a while and the next morning i was super suspicious so i checked her phone and all the incomming and outgoing calls and texts were erased so i KNEW something was up. The next night at the club both of em were acting pissy towards everyone and they kept bein mean to eachother, like he would ask her to help him with fliers and shed tell him to fuck off and hed have an attitude about it. So finally monday at work I had just had it so i went in her Facebook and all her messages were erased except for 2 she forgot to get to, they were in her sent messages, one was kinda flirty and the next one was one saying she was pissed at him for playin games with her and makin her think something was gonan happen ect ect.

I confronted her about it that day and she came by to get all her stuff yesterday from my house. Shes pretty upset about it, she was saying she never acutually DID anything with him, it was more of a flirtatious thing and when it came down to it they decided not to do anything out of "respect" for me LOL, thank god for "friends" right.

Still havent talked to the dude, still dont know how thats gonna go but all i know is that from the moment i walk in that club to the moment that i leave im a professional whos there to do a job so none of this shit matters durring that time frame, those are personal problems and their left at home. Like ive said ive worked to hard to get here to fuck it up now. Things are really starting to pick up for me!!



3 and a half years, im whatever about it because im focused on the whle DJing thing. I love the girl like no other but there was alot of time and resources going into that that prevented me from doing things i need to do. For example she HATED me being on the computer while she was there so i would never have time to do any major digging for new tracks or organising my crates. I think its little things like that i need to focus on to get to the next level.





To each his own, still waiting for a pic of msjohnnym, and in either case looks arent always everything. I would define FAIL more along the lines of losing a battle and not being able to own up to it even years after its had time to sink in

ya this thread is definatley on a course for being locked so let me loop it around back where it should be, im going to ignore the post from msbez except for one line that i do feel the need to clarify



I think we have a bit of out of context and a misquote here, in the actual conversation i mentioned i posted what happened on here and i got a lot of support, thanks to all the PMs i got and all the people being supportive like a fam, the FUCK them came right after i told her that everyone except 1 person was supportive, only 1 took the opportunity to talk shit and use the opportunity for their own so fuck him and anyone else who will use it to talk shit and i stand by that. I respect pretty much every single member of this board except for about couple of people, i really don't have any respect for them and think their kinda sad.


As far as johnny who comes in at no respect sad individual # 1. My entire persona on this forum is to act like an idiot, if anything to be the opposite of jackasses like you who sit on their DJ thrones like it means they discovered the cure for aids and think they know everything because they can beat match 2 records, so the dumb immature shit i say is to be expected, as a matter of fact i go out of my way to make it that, but damn son i got you hopping around in here like its your 1st day in jr high and you tryna make a name for yourself by playin the dozens lol. Keep having your fun, whatever makes your day better B. If i can put a smile on 1 persons face then i did my job whether im telling the joke or the but of it so keep up the good work.

So hopefully we can get this thread back on course, its purpose is to document my journey through all this shit, kind of like a documentary for people just gettin on the path, to let em see the kind of shit people go through walking this road and let them learn from my mistakes along the way. So thanks to everyone participating, keep droppin advice where you can cause i definatley use all of it. As for all this bullshit, like i said, im going to go to work friday night and just use it to rock the damn crowd THAT much harder. Thats what i live to do and itll take alot more than all this to derail that.
