Playing the Same Artists at one gig...

tig ol' bitties 1:47 AM - 31 October, 2006
I was jus wondering...

when you playing a gig lets say 9-1 or 10-2, I know sometimes people may play the same song twice, but how many times a night do you play the same artist..like 3 jigga songs.
Sim 3:19 AM - 31 October, 2006
plenty of times, if the song is hot, Ill drop it, dont care who its by, I just wont do it back to back

when u got an artist like 50 for example, who has plenty of club worthy songs, its bound to happen
djskeetz 4:29 AM - 31 October, 2006
I play em back to back to back sometimes.
ditc 4:37 AM - 31 October, 2006
i def will either make a point to quick mix like 2,3,or 4 tracks by the same artist (ll, michael jackson, jay-z, biggie etc) back to back, kinda in like a themed progression, whether it be from new to old, or old to new etc but if i'm not doing that, i try to not drop the same artist twice not back to back within 45 mins-an hour (that doesn't include guest appearances etc.)
djskeetz 4:41 AM - 31 October, 2006
i think its more of a DJ thing than of a crowd thing. drunk bitches could give a fuck less, and if they do give a fuck, fuck em anyways.
CMS 12:30 PM - 31 October, 2006
I'll play multiple songs by the same artist, I usually try not too play the same song twice though. Usually there has to be some incentive for me to double play a song, like cash or boobies :)
soeasy 2:12 PM - 31 October, 2006
you shouldn't ever be playing the same song twice in one night.
rock the same artist back to back...yes, one or two verse mixes with some biggie and it's on. but yeah, if you picked the right time in the night to play that one hot club banger then you shouldn't have to play it twice. and for the people that want to hear "insert newest hot song name here" at 10 at night, they just don't get it. those are our weapons yo! we ain't gonna pull out the wu-tang sword to the stomach yet if yall are just throwing jabs!
DJJOHNNYM 2:25 PM - 31 October, 2006
Multiple songs from the same artist, sure...back to back...sure! A Jay-Z or G-Unit quick mix, but NEVER the same song twice...well, I may rock the Instrumental of SEXY BACK with an accapella of something in the beginning of the nite to tease the crowd, but I wouldn't play the words until later.
Rebelguy 3:01 PM - 31 October, 2006
I have no problem playing the same song twice. I have even gone so far as playing a song three times. What was the reaction...off the hook each time. I am starting to feel like the old school DJS rules are changing. Anything is fair game nowadays, as long as the crowd goes home happy and chanting your name...haha.
DJ Silk 4:06 PM - 31 October, 2006
If the song is hot...it can get played back to back.
I think I still have video footage of a DJ playing Lean Back 5 times in a row and he got the same reaction from the 3 thousand people the fifth time he played it that he did the first time he played it.
It just depends on the song and the crowd.

When I was a young cat in the game I never repeated tracks. Now that I have more experience I'm not against it. I don't make it a poinot to repeat tracks, but if I play a track earlier in the night, and then get request for it, and its a hot enough track then I'll run it back.

At the end of the day in the club it's what the people want. Got to give the people what they want...otherwise I would have deleted all my dirty south records..LOL
E-Double 4:59 PM - 31 October, 2006
When 50's "In Da Club" was hot, a buddy of mine looped the chorus for like 5 minutes to see if the crowd would notice. The crowd didn't really mind...up until about minute 4. It was pretty funny...
DJJOHNNYM 7:21 PM - 31 October, 2006
I feel you DJ Silk about the Dirty South stuff....
gucca69 7:59 PM - 31 October, 2006
i never play the same song twice in a set no matter how much it rocks!
djskeetz 8:06 PM - 31 October, 2006
aight, ill try the double-triple song thing, and see what happens.

i do this sometimes, but i'll quick mix 'em.
djskeetz 10:59 PM - 31 October, 2006
shit, if chris the rebel is double and triple playing songs, i'm gonna try that too!
djtonypsalms 11:25 PM - 31 October, 2006
In Reggae dances...

If a song is "hot" AKA BOOMSHOT (classic or new), lighters would light, and people would bawl, FORWARD!!!

A tune with that status gets played 3X, at least, ie. Bob Marley & The Wailers "One Drop."
scotty B 11:40 PM - 31 October, 2006
it happens... I have no problem playing a few different songs by the same artist in one night. Especially if I think the artist is dope. You will always hear at LEASt one Dilated Peoples song in my sets....

Slow down now.....it has to be an absolute, undeniable, hit/hot track.
Lean Back....was one of those rare records.

You'll know when you can do it....the crowd and your heart will tell you. ;-)
sixxx 6:09 PM - 1 November, 2006
I'd say it would be best NOT TO PLAY THE SAME GENRE TWICE IN ONE NIGHT so it would go something similar to this:

Throw 1 hip hop song, 1 jazz, 1 r&b song, 1 old school, 1 oldie, 1 house, 1 techno, 1 cumbia, 1 ranchera, 1 banda, 1 country... etc.

:P
DJ Evil One 6:15 PM - 1 November, 2006
i'll play a whole night of just TUPAC! i'll even play "all eyes on me" straight through. i'll sometimes play a night of all acapella tupac.
sixxx 6:18 PM - 1 November, 2006
I'd like to play all night of a "silent" track and get paid for it. That would rock.
DjWoody 7:07 PM - 1 November, 2006
Hahaha

I heard Sasha drop Moby - Lift Me Up, 3 times in a row. But each time a different remix. It was weird. 20 Minutes of the same track!

gucca69 3:24 AM - 3 November, 2006
if the crowd dig it do it if they start leavin the foor quick cut out of the track with a banger!
look you are a dj you can read the crowd after the first half hour so just do your thing!
keep em rockin!!!!!!!
AKIEM 6:29 AM - 3 November, 2006
dont return to an artist too quick. play somebody as much as you want, just dont go back to them for a while once you play someone else
Rebelguy 11:53 PM - 3 November, 2006
I still don't understand where people come up with these rules. If you can make party off the hook by playing the same song 5 times, the same artists 20 times in a night or country mixed with Polka then good for you. Your job is to take the party to the next level. How you do it is your perrogative.
AKIEM 6:56 AM - 4 November, 2006
they arnt rules, they are suggestions, the DJs version of requests.

hey rock the party however you can, whatever b

but paying attention to these, understanding them can help you be a better DJ

If you are hosting the Wu show do you play ODB?

If you are spinning the Prince after party do you play Michael?

If you are playing the Clinton function do you play Mambo #9
djHSL 8:30 AM - 4 November, 2006
... a little bit of Monica in my life ...

Sure :) Why not? *grin*
AKIEM 7:18 PM - 4 November, 2006
haaa, which Clinton? haaaaaa

do drum-n-bass rewinds count?

I've never heard you do a rewind in the 5 or so years that I have known you...

But I heard that when Roni Size dropped Bodyrock for the first time, he rewound it SEVEN times, and the crowd went nuts every time. I guess Roni got it direct from Andy C before anyone else had it (other than Andy C, that is, who opened and closed his set with Bodyrock the previous night).

So I guess a dnb rewind is ok, especially since it is a crowd response thing to do.
