I was looking for Highest Hip Hop Dj and didn't see one. I know EDM is the most popular music in the world, but did not a single non EDM DJ make the list?
DJ FLATLINE 8:24 AM - 26 October, 2006
i vote that someone start an urban top 100.
DjWoody 8:43 AM - 26 October, 2006
There used to be hip hop DJ's on it before. But I guess no one votes for them anymore. I remember Qbert and Funkmaster Flex used to be on it.
DjWoody 8:53 AM - 26 October, 2006
I guess Paul Van Dyk is number #1.

PAUL VAN DYK VOTED WORLD’S NO.1 DJ

Paul van Dyk clinches most prestigious DJ title for second consecutive year

October 26, 2006 – Fans across the globe have once again named Paul van Dyk as the World’s No.1 DJ for the second consecutive year. The Grammy nominated artist, composer, producer and political activist was announced as the winner at a ceremony held at London’s Fabric Club on Wednesday, October 25th.

DJ Magazine’s Top 100 DJs Poll, the most prestigious reference point for DJs around the world drew almost 250,000 votes from 235 countries, indicating that dance music is rapidly growing beyond its core audience.

“To be voted No.1 last year was a great honor, and to win it for a second time is very special,” van Dyk said. “I’d like to dedicate the award to all those involved in electronic music who make and play the records we love. The amount of votes in this year’s Poll is testament to the continuing strength of our scene, and that in difficult global times, our culture stands as a positive force in uniting people from different cultural backgrounds through music.”

PvD, as he is affectionately known by his fans, is renowned as one of the hardest working artists with sold-out tours across the globe, headlining spots at every festival, and a flurry of awards to match.

Aside from his musical activity, Paul van Dyk has always dedicated a significant part of his life to politics and social justice: after growing up in communist East Germany, PvD became the only electronic artist involved with the Rock The Vote campaign in 2004 with a national tour, joining P Diddy, the Black Eyed Peas and Mary J. Blige among others in encouraging America’s youth to sign up to vote in the presidential election. His charitable activities have ranged from benefits for Ground Hero Kids after 9/11 and for the Red Cross after the Tsunami disaster and Hurricane Katrina to his support for the Akanksha children’s charity in India’s Mumbai province and his partnership scheme with the German Red Cross to help poor and disadvantaged children in Berlin. He was most recently awarded a medal of honor by the State of Berlin, to recognize his unique accomplishments and dedication.

Paul van Dyk continues to tour the world as part of his VONYC Sessions tour to promote VONYC.com a unique combined internet radio station and download site created by van Dyk in order to make the music he champions easily accessible to fans all over the world.

Paul van Dyk just completed his remix of the new Depeche Mode single “Martyr” and is spending any time which remains between tour dates in his Berlin studio or with other artists recording material for his next studio album which is due out next year.

Top 10

1 Paul van Dyk - PVD has retained his crown as the world’s number one DJ in 2006. The German trancer remains top dog for the second year running.

2 Armin van Buuren - After spending three years at No.3, Dutch trance star Armin has beaten the mighty Tiësto to second place. His hard work continues to pay off.

3 Tiësto - Three times No.1 DJ Tiësto remains one of the world’s biggest spinners, capable of filling stadiums with his epic Dutch trance sounds.

4 Christopher Lawrence - North American trance don Lawrence is leading the scene Stateside and is increasingly present on the global stage. He’s climbed up 10 places since last year.

5 DJ Dan - US jock Dan wins the ‘Highest House DJ’ accolade this year. Although something of a dark horse in Europe, in the States he’s huge.

6 Ferry Corsten - Ferry has had a number of big hits over the years, and 2006 was a great year for him - his album received critical acclaim the world over.

7 Sasha - Sasha is the highest placed British DJ in this year’s poll, and still one of the world’s biggest. He played at Sonar in Barcelona for the first time in 2006.

8 Digweed - Diggers has been in the Top 10 for years, and has constantly strived to inject new sounds into his sets. He’s a true renaissance man.

9 Above & Beyond - The DJ/production trio are one of the main acts breathing new life into the trance scene. It’s no surprise they have finally broken into the Top 10.

10 Deep Dish - The Washington-based duo fill clubs the world over, and have won many awards over the years whilst remixing the likes of Madonna.

Ya know, if it wasn't for coming to this forum for the past year, I would only know who TWO of these DJs are. Actually 3. PVD, Oakenfold, and Carl Cox. And out of these 3 I've only heard Carl Cox spin once. Now I at least recognize 15 of 'em. I guess I should try and get out more :-P

I have a theory on this. You see, EDM doesn't evolve as much as hip hop does. It has remained virtually unchanged for years allowing DJs to make a name for themselves and hiphop always changes from year to year, not to mention your catering to a smaller, 'bring it' type of audience. Then there are different types of hip hop djs. You have your turntablist, then you have your mixologist, and then there's the screaming mixtape(compilation) dj.

All of them struggle to differenciate themselves from one another and almost none of them are thinking of getting an audience like PVD, but instead hip hop djs and tablists focus on competitions from an actual battle standpoint such as the DMC or ITF or various other local battles to distinguish themselves as the top dog.
Monk-A 2:54 PM - 26 October, 2006
There's at least 50 names on that list i wouldn't even let carry my records.

Utter gash.... I'd like to see the demographic they canvassed to get that sh*t pile together.

EDM evolves A LOT. I can think of at least 10 different types of EDM right now. Minimal is pretty hot right now. But not hot enough to make huge DJs out of it. Electro is huge! And Trance, well, it seems like it's branching out to.

There's many type of EDM Djs on that list, but Trance is still nominating it.

The Top 4 DJs in that list are trance. But all 4 spin vary different styles of trance. PVD is freakin HARD with some techno thrown in there. He usually spins about 140 BPM. That's FAST. Then Armin Van Buuren is a more melodic. He has a certain sound to him. Tiesto. Well, when he's not slacking off, he's freaking awesome. His a bit more appealing to a wider audice, more vocal, dreamy, and more commercial. Plus he was the first DJ ever to play during the Olympics. Christopher Lawrence. He's pretty dark, almost underground I would say. See, all those 4 DJ's play trance, but you can easily tell them apart from each other cuz their styles are way different.

Hahaha yeah, there's some DJs there that I'm like UH? How they get there? Remember, this his a poll, so it doesnt necessarily mean they are the Top 100 Best Technical DJs. For that I think Sasha wins hands down. Tiesto wrecks a lot. It's just a damn popularity contest.
Monk-A 4:20 PM - 26 October, 2006
yeah completely...

Sasha is a great mixer people don't often realise exactly how good that guy is, and how much he remixes on the fly.

It is a very trance orientated top 100 isn't it? nowt wrong with that, it's just i think maybe their demographic was alitle bit... er... biased. :)

Well put Osiris... I'm not feeling this list at all though. Jazzy Jeff, AM, Spinbad aren't in the Top 100 in the world? Regardless of genre. Yeah right.
Monk-A 7:41 PM - 26 October, 2006
exactly.. the poll was obviously given to 15-25 year old spoon feeders trpping their tit's off whilst gurning at eahc other.

There is some dope DJ's in there, but it's not even remotely the top 100.
DjWoody 7:52 PM - 26 October, 2006
Maybe the hip hop heads should start voting for their favorite DJ. Like I said, hip hop DJ's have been on it before. The poll is a simple write in poll, where you write the names of your Top 5 DJs.
Monk-A 7:57 PM - 26 October, 2006
ok, but DJmag isn't exactly known for it's hip hop, it's mainly read by edm peeps.

anyway your right people, me included, should just shut up about it :)
s42000 8:45 PM - 26 October, 2006
We have had this discussion before about this DJ popularity poll .... Deja Vu all over again. And we came to the same conclusions.

Sh!t aint changed.
Melissa 9:20 PM - 27 October, 2006
If the Fader or the Source did the poll, the list would be very different...
DJ_Mike_Coquilla 2:53 PM - 28 October, 2006
i wonder if there's a list/poll for mobiles/wedding DJs?

out of a 100, i'd probably score more like the nosebleeding section of the bleachers :)
