Peeps Setting Drinks On The DJ Table

DJ Uncle Needle Drop 1:53 AM - 19 October, 2006
I'm sure some of you have to deal with this also, lately I've had an unusual amount of people think that it's ok to set their drinks on my dj table while they dance. I'm pretty militant about stopping what I'm doing and picking them up right away and putting them elsewhere, but that really cuts into my music selection time and mixing. Has anyone found a sure fire way to keep people from doing this? -Short of putting up a big ass sign?

I'm to the point where i'm thinking of going to a printer and having a really nice classy little card/sign that asks in a polite way for them to please not set their drinks on the dj table. Any ideas?

Ok heres the solution..ready...

hire a bouncer
Freedom 3:27 AM - 19 October, 2006
Ive found that if you put up a cloth like a towel doubled up where they put there drinks works so they kno its un unstable surface..

or just decorate the table enought that they cant place anything anywhere.
DJ Michael Basic 3:29 AM - 19 October, 2006
Wedges work well. A sloped surface on any part of the table you aren't using works well, either they see that it's not flat, or they put their drink down and it falls off the tables away from your equipment.
nautical 5:08 AM - 19 October, 2006
i use caution tape at some parties when i dj.
but ya, crowd the table so there's no space for them to put it.

I was having this problem also last weekend and what really sucked is that they were my friends.Sober of course, they would have known better.I tried to keep my cool but I found that it was all wet right next to where I had my Yamaha mixer board set at.A few more inches and it would have gotten all over my sh*#.I was so pissed!I told one of my boys"WTF man you spilled your beer right here. and my boy said "I f I would have spilled it I would have told you straight out so relax" then my cousin stepped in and said"Both of you chill the fu*# out".Maybe I was wrong to acuse because I didnt actually see anyone spill there sh*# there but they definetly had there brews on the table.

In this case, I thinks its best to tell anyone that comes close to your table right from the start not to put drinks on the table.
DJ_Mike_Coquilla 12:09 PM - 19 October, 2006
tha sign sounds like it should do the trick. i'm sure they'll respect that.
Monk-A 12:16 PM - 19 October, 2006
Just wave your hand at them, and shake your head when they go to put the stuff down....

That or throw the drink at them. :)
JayB1200 12:25 PM - 19 October, 2006
i take the drinks when there not lookin and throw them away
DJ_Mike_Coquilla 12:32 PM - 19 October, 2006

Yep that works best. I was djing at this lounge and these girls insisted on putting their drinks right next to my hard drive. So I politely got their attention and asked them to move the drinks. They moved them but then two minutes later this next girl tries to put her drink down and I give her the "no sign", she complies. Five minutes later, the first group girls sets their drinks down on the table again and left them there, despite me telling them no (again). At this point, I wanted to stop the music and get on the mic, but I just grabbed the drinks put them on the bar and the bartender threw them out. I was anticipating some flack, but when they came back but they understood that they violated in the first place, one chick was even flirting, being playful..."so what you going to do for me to make up for that drink"

This one sounds like the fail-proof.

One of my friends spilled her drink on my mixer at a house party once--she was really apologetic and I was a little pissed, but then I realized: "Magnetic faders! Who cares!" Of course, the pots could've gotten fucked up, but they didn't, lucky for me.
DJ Uncle Needle Drop 3:07 PM - 19 October, 2006
Years ago, I had the bride dump and entire glass of champagne on one of my 1200's. What do you say? I was so pissed! But we were about to do the first toat so I had to move on. I cleaned up the mess first though.

Another thing that really gets me and scares the shit outa me is when people come up with drinks in their hand to make a request and they lean over my equipment all drunk with their drink 1/2inch away from my tone arm. I feel like 25% of my time at my gigs is spent looking out for dumbshits sometimes.

LOL @ the caution tape suggestion, I don't think that would look very nice at a wedding reception when the the clients are paying decorators to make everything look all pretty and shit. A school dance maybe, but those lil shits shouldn't be walking around with cocktails anyway! The usually have a flask.

I may need to invest in some nice crowd control barriers. www.crowdcontrolwarehouse.com

Hahahahaha.. can you imagine.
DJ Upperkuts 3:58 PM - 19 October, 2006
Rotwillers, Barbwire, Tazer... No but seriously people need to understand that Your gear is your bread n buttah. regurdless if you out there grinding at gigs or in the studio. RESPECT. If they can't do that, then tell them to step aside. OR Option 2 Charge for damaged equipment and get those new tables you been drooling over. 1
allstarchris 4:01 PM - 19 October, 2006
What about insurance?

I'd still be worried though, having to go through the hassle of transfering music files again. Tedious stuff.
DJ Uncle Needle Drop 4:06 PM - 19 October, 2006
Yeah I'm saying I don't want to even have to get near the point of having to use my insurance. At all.
allstarchris 4:10 PM - 19 October, 2006
True.

This is my practice. When I mobile I use material all the way around my rig and there visually is no place to SET a drink. The woofer cab is half under the coffin and from the backside, this is a great place for me to set my drink, but from the front it looks like a black tent framed up from coffin to floor. As for those approaching with beverages, I quickly look them over figure out how drunk they are and appraoch them blocking the gear from drips or spills. Those hotties that are slightly tipsy make it farther but even then I'm quick to grab the glass away from them as they try to yell at my headphone...
sixxx 6:32 PM - 19 October, 2006
It's all about control. YOU DON'T GRAB THE DRINKS AND PUT THEM AWAY... that just makes you a slave. How about instead, you rapidly tell them to NOT PUT THEIR DRINKS THERE. That's what I do. Also, if anyone wants to request something they have to COME OVER TO ONE SIDE OF THE TABLE AND NOT RIGHT IN FRONT OF ME ON TOP OF MY EQUIPMENT... drink in hand or not.
DJ Uncle Needle Drop 7:02 PM - 19 October, 2006
Yeah but sixxx, this happens while im in the middle of mixing or announcing, and they turn and walk away quickly and the music is loud so they can't hear. If I have the chance to tell them "no" I'll do it, but it seems like a lot of the time they do it when I don't get a chance too.

I like the side table comment though. I'm seriously thinking about getting those retractable barriers though. That way, I don't have to interrupt my mixing to tell them to go around to the side of the table.

these double barriers are cool but expensive! www.crowdcontrolwarehouse.com

A lot less expensive than having to buy new equipment though...

I tell my son to move the drinks. I never leave my console unless nature calls.
People would put their drinks on my Sub since the tops are now on speaker poles. Yo, some people would sit on em too! So now I lay out my biz cards all over the speaker. So far it's working.
For the coffin, I just ask them not to put it there. And of course you won't see my drink any ol place either.
Never snap at a patron, if they don't listen, just be professional and move the drink.
If your at a club, ask the owner to have a bouncer close by. I've seen a lot of dj's get harrassed all the time, whether it's drunks, or some arrogant customer trying to get his request played.
I remember back in the day in Hawaii, a packed garage, people dancing so frickin close to the setup. I had to get on the mic and tell them to move back. Did that work? No. So I turned the music off! LOL!

sixxx 4:13 AM - 20 October, 2006
DJ Uncle Needle Drop... I can understand if you're in the middle of mixing but if you're announcing...USE THE DAMN MIC TO TELL THEM NOT TO PUT THE DRINK THERE.

:)
DJ Uncle Needle Drop 11:56 AM - 20 October, 2006
yeah, that would be very professional. I'm sure the Bride and groom would appreciate that announcment in the middle of another announcment. That shit might work in a club but not at a wedding reception.
sixxx 12:12 PM - 20 October, 2006
Aaah. I get it now. You didn't mention wedding. lol

Gotcha.
mister iLL 6:30 PM - 22 October, 2006
"The bride and groom respectfully ask that you refrain from placing drinks on this table"
zomanno 8:30 PM - 22 October, 2006
