Control vinyl that isn't so loud?

This might sound odd but sometimes I mix with the volume low, but the high pitch 'beep' from the vinyl is really annoying. Do I have any options other than phase?

Nope. It depends on the cartridges you're using. Some are "louder" than others.
Phase is the best option. But if you're djing in a loud club environment you won't hear the beep sound at all.
But at home the beep will annoy you very much...

Not a bad idea to use low output voltage cartridges to help minimising the ringing but besides that you could get some old $erato DVS vinyl before the "remastering" that increased the output in 6 dBs more.
They all used the louder signal mantra as a marketing tool but thing is that to make DVS work you only need the signal to be clean and not so loud which actually leads to more problems.

Yeah, if you use non 'performance series' vinyl it is a bit quieter under the stylus.
Otherwise, phase would be your best option if it really bothers you.

The expensive but more satisfying option would be the CRSS12's

Rane 12 are not that great either.
Would recommend phase instead if vinyl needs to be played

Phase is the unexpensive solution and quite satisfying as well.
