Best boOM and BASS test tracks... what'r yours?

DJ GaFFle 3:38 PM - 21 September, 2009
What tracks do you use when testing for best bass and overall sound quality for your car or your PA sound system? Over-compressed and over-normalized tracks (aka: Jay-Z's entire new album, Pitbull tracks) need not apply...

Here are a few of mine:

for BASS
-------------------------
"Renae" - The Lost Boyz
"Mirror Dance" - Afefe Iku
"Days Like This" - Shaun Escoffery
"Oxy-cotton" - Lil Wyte
"Bourbon & Lacs" - Master P
"Krispy" - Kia Shine
"Buy you a Drink" - TPain
"A Milli" - Lil Wayne
"Last Night" - Nemesis

for overall SOUND QUALITY
-------------------------------------
"Hey Nineteen" - Steely Dan
"Billy Jean" - Michael Jackson
"Love Takes Time" - Mariah Carey
"Little Things" - India Arie
a couple of Sting tracks
a couple of Santana tracks
"The Dude" album - Quincy Jones
"Long Time no See" album - Chico DeBarge

I purposely left off Jazz because it's a given and I don't play that genre often.
D-Twizzle 3:43 PM - 21 September, 2009
How about some old skool 90's miami bass, or so so def bass all-stars? yea, i'm old
DPR250R 3:49 PM - 21 September, 2009

DJ Benny B NYC 3:51 PM - 21 September, 2009

TC - Where's My Money (Caspa Remix)
Logisticalstyles 4:15 PM - 21 September, 2009
For bass I like to use Jeezy's 'Put On'

Not too long ago I was diggin in the bargin bin for CDs and came across one of those old school Miami/Techno Bass Cd's. It has all of the reference tests on it plus some other Bass heavy tracks as well. I think it was called Tecno-Bass on PanDisc records.
DJ Art Pumpin Payne 4:30 PM - 21 September, 2009
A Milli - Lil Wayne (just kidding), been a long time since I boomed.

I found a whole comp/series of those as Mp3 while I was digital blog digging. I was very tempted to grab them but figured it would be a waste of drive space. I can't remember the blog now of course.

Mperor 6:49 AM - 22 September, 2009
i always poppped in an outkast cd when I got a new system put in the whip. the very beginning of southernplayalistic was always the test
SeriousCyrus 7:27 AM - 22 September, 2009
My current favourite bass track.

Martyn - Vancouver

That sorted out which monitors I would be buying in the shop.

Sound quality is a much harder one to pinpoint, but for the sake of argument, I'll go for

Goldfrapp - Human
Caramac 10:00 AM - 22 September, 2009
I always put on some 90's East Coast thing. Not all of that was mixed all that well in hindsight so if those songs sound good then by default most of the newer stuff should sound good.

Once that sounds good I'll then start chopping through some random songs to see how the sound system sounds.

For Overall,
Jazzy Pha tracks like Ciara - Get Up
Outkast - I Like the Way You Move

For Bass only I like to use the Instrumental of 112's - It's Over Now
(At Larger Venues or Concert Halls) It tests your Sound Guys skillset....they always end up saying something like, "I hate hip-hop tracks" or "Live Instruments/Vocals is what I normally deal with."

In my car's system. Still to this day I use Do Or Die's - Picture This album.
3. Do you Wanna Ride
5. Paper Chase
6. Playa Like Me and You
Sorry, '95 was the year of the Pimp in Southern California :)

society 8:48 PM - 22 September, 2009
For bass I like to use 2 Chemical Brothers songs.

"Under the Influence" is good cuz right at the beginning there's a sine tone that continuously drops pretty low and it lets me know if there are any "dips" at any point in the low end frequency response.

"Setting Sun" is good cuz after a short intro, the "real" bass kicks in on the bass drum, and if I can't hear it, I know the speakers aren't truly giving up the goods.

Mr. Cheese 71nyc 4:59 PM - 23 September, 2009
Koppa Top right if ya looking for sound quality reggae band music, salsa (Tieto P) or D&B. The electronic stuff is too mono-tone where one song sound good one system and suck on the other--Bob Marley-Natural Mystic or Pressure- Love and Affection, not to mention a lot of this rap stuff aint mastered too well either

A lot of people keep pointing to Bob Marley's stuff. I guess I should give him a listen...

Too Short songs
Mr. Cheese 71nyc 8:18 PM - 23 September, 2009
@GaFFle I think it was because of Reggae music or Dancehall DJ's that they keep building them big ass speaker boxes

Speaking of dancehall... No Games - Serani during the intro beat has a low rumble that is fierce!

dubstep or drum n bass work for bottom end testing...
dJ bMaN 12:10 AM - 29 September, 2009
I know this may seem crazy but Shirley Murdock's "As We Lay." An even better song for bass is 2pac's "Violent." As far as acoustics, I use this contemporary jazz song called "After Hours" by Ronny Jordan. If I don't have time to play these and people are already there, its "Buy you a Drank" by T-Pain or "So Fly" by Slim.
DJDaveOtt 5:03 AM - 29 September, 2009

latinblood2k1 1:52 AM - 30 September, 2009

Whoa,... that 2Pac "Violent" bumps! I've never been a huge 2Pac fan so I never heard this track. I had this cd and his other albums 'sealed', LOL. Needless to say, this one's now in my collection for sound check. I like the storyline/lyrics too. Thx!

Fear Factory - Shock

A little different than some of the other tracks posted, but if you listen to and/or play rock and metal it's a great tester. Pretty sure the bass wave that kicks in with the vocals is somewhere around the 50Hz range.

The whole album is well produced, and has arguably one of the best kick drum sounds on any metal album.
SatanSpawn6666 6:50 AM - 26 September, 2017

Just try it, and turn up the bass on your best earphones/headphones. Feel awash with waves of childhood nostalgia.
