it's funny to see what ppl have. i have a design background...but making a logo is something that i've never done and in fact something i'm having a hard time doing. Most of my design work is like layouts and stuff like that. Like I said I don't have any logo design experience but here's some tips for what I do know.

A traditional logo should be color neutral...the logo should easily be reproducible when it's in black and white. Having a "picture" logo is tougher to reproduce on banners, shirts, print publications, etc. You should be able to stick a logo any where you want...after all your trying to create a brand for yourself!

If you want a color scheme...go find a color wheel and learn a little bit about color theory. Otherwise there are some good applets online to "create" some color schemes.

Use a vector graphics editor...what if someday you want to blow your image up to a huge banner...it's gonna be a lot more work if you have your logo saved as a bitmap editor.

If you want a more complicated logo with colors and pictures, make sure you can do a make an abbreviate logo. For example, if he wanted too, you take out the background of this logo and you'd still recognize him as the same dj:

A lot of companies have abbreviated logos as I mentioned above...such as Merrill Lynch...the scratch live logo...Wilson sports...etc. This is another way to attack that beast.

Gradients don't reproduce well on shirts, banners, etc.

Don't forget where your logo is gonna go...one things may look good on a flyer but not on a small business card or webpage.

Filling in a logo with a picture is typically a no-no...unless you know what your doing.

the CMYK at the top of the page one is what I use for my business and DJ'ing (color + sound waves). Got tired of promoting both of them separately for fear of alienating clients, so I just rebranded myself into one entity.

I saw your design and I think you should be using Adobe Illustrator instead of Photoshop.
You could do the whole design in vector and you can use a vector graphic on anything compared to photoshop, only a few. Vector is the way to go.

Here's the all but finished black and white copy of my logo. My designer and I were compromising with style vs legibility and he created the font face from the ground up over the course of several weeks and revisions.

Nice. Legibility is a bit tough there in the "ter" if super reduced but I like the balance and overall style. I think it has a good "stamp" look for flyers next to a bunch of other logos
