k-Array subwoofers the 18inch or 21inch sub need help choosing

djcrap 12:53 AM - 29 January, 2019
i have been looking at the k-array subs online at

www.bhphotovideo.com

the reason am interested in them is their weight and portability. the 18 inch k-array is only 60ibs and the 21 inch is 108 pounds! compared to my 2 qsc 18 inch subs that weight 88ibs each

am most interested in the 21 inch k-array subwoofer money is not a problem ! that since its a 21 inch woofer but portable. i can stomach the weight even if its 108 ibs basically 20 more pounds than my current qsc

now the question is does any body own or ever heard them in use in person? what was your experience when you first heard them i mean like how was the thump of the bass. how would you compare them to a regular 18 inch qsc subwoofer.

repeat if money was not a problem! or how much they cost would you pull the trigger?

I’ve heard the 18s with k-array tops and the whole system sounds truly amazing. Haven’t heard the subs with other tops so I don’t know if they are worth the price as the upper frequencies are where k-array is truly on some other level.

that type of gear is way above my pay grade.

that said, I've heard good things about the company - definitely a level up over the prosumer market although you pay for it.

considering the price and performance that will be a no for me.

Which pro consumer subwoofer would you guesstimate the k-rray 18s. Sounded like when you heard ?

Comparisons of just the subs are hard. k-array has a super transparent sound if that makes sense. Not crushingly loud, more close your eyes and it sounds like the sound is coming from inside your head. It’s much nicer than traditional speakers especially for prolonged listing. Still loud, just not harsh. The bass isn’t over blown but solid. It’s really a “system” so no way to guess what the subs sound like outside if that environment without hearing them that way.

All speaker cabinets must obey the laws of physics so in order to achieve big bass you need big speaker cabinets and that 60 pounds this is a very small sub.

The specs of the 18 inch sub are quite comparable to my JBLVRX sub in comparison of SPL, frequency response and power handling. But the fact that it’s k array we know the sound quality will be excellent but you’re not getting much more SPL than a JBLVRX. In my opinion this sub would need to be 6 dB higher in SPL which is the equivalent of 2 JBLVRX subs to being worth the money.
