2015 is the last non touchbar style. I'd look to max one of those out if you want to run High Sierra and not have silly stuff like the light sensor make your display stutter.

Or if you want a mid 2012 maxxed out non-retina will let you slap a 2TB drive in the optical bay and they still hum along just fine, especially running Yosemite.

So in theory I could take out my optical drive on my late 2011 and do the same ?

But surely the newer macs perform better with better processors in them like the 2014 or 2015 ?

As long as you aren't have video issues, which was a problem with some 2011 models, yes you can take out the dvd drive and get a datadoubler bracket from OWC (www.macsales.com) and buy a $80 2TB 9.5mm (very important, fatter drives won't fit) and squeeze a lot more use out of it.

But yes, if you're set on buying a newer model in the next 6 months, price out some user 2015s that have been maxxed out since you cannot upgrade them like you could the mid 2012s and earlier.

Only on the 2012/13 ones, 2014-2017 cannot be upgraded aftermarket yet.

So if you had a choice between 2014-2016 what one would you go for ?

Personally, if I bought a machine today, I would find a used, maxed out 2015 and roll with that.

I’m using a 2016 and have had zero issues.

The downside to the Retina ones is if something goes wrong with them, you usually have to repair/replace half of the laptop (and likely won't be able to do it yourself) since nearly everything on the logic board is soldered. Also, I know Serato and VDJ don't fully support the Retina resolution so it looks a bit weird. I use a 2015 MBPr and I'm honestly tempted to sell it and get a 2012 just for how easy it is to replace/upgrade things. That being said, it has worked really well so far.
