Serato Rules:

- at least 2 minutes of Absolute mode ONLY. (this could carry the most weight)
- up to 2 minute total of relative mode used anywhere in the set.
- pre-made skits are accepted (ie: rips from a movie, song, TV show or soundtrack) but points may be deducted if they are overdone (like a multi-track pre-made mix with pre-made scratches in it :-(
- total battle-set must be at least 3 - 6 minutes.

OK. So, here are the rules since I was the one challenged.

• No Serato. (2 turntables, 1 mixer and regular records)
• 3 to 5 minutes.
• Anything goes as far as music/samples but obviously no pre-mixed anything.
• Record your set on video (AUDIO ONLY NOT ALLOWED) and upload for everyone who is going to download and judge. You must password protect your zip file for people to be able to judge after both files have been submitted.
• You have 7 days from today 07/01/09 to submit your mix.
• No sore losers allowed. Battling has been a foundation in DJing and if you can't handle losing, you don't need to participate.
• No hard feelings no matter what the results are. :)

It's all about having a little fun....right? Battles are a way to show skill, practice skill and maybe learn some new ones. Everyone has their good days and their bad days, judges also look at different things. Some juddge might really be into a crab scratch while another judge is really into scratching with your elbow. Niether of which are the same skill but both are cool. So there won't be a "who's better" just a "who had the better routine that day.

trust me. i don't do no midi controller or juggling with cue points and stuff like that. i don't even know half of the "stunts" that people can do on serato.

I see were sixxx is coming from though, It's the fundamentals of a battle (to dig or if you already have) to have those rare cuts or songs (gems) that you know no one knows about and drop them in your set and have the crowd go nuts. It's just a "1 up" you might have on the opponent, but you still have to have the skills (i.e. how to drop it, mix it, juggle it, scratch it, etc....) to creatively put it in the set. Which in my opinion is KEY.

It's up to them to know how to deliver. Part of being a dj is to stand out as YOU and only YOU, there's plenty of dj's here who can spot out fake from real, so this will depict their style/persona.

I dont see how thats valid, sure its about the rare cuts that could make the crowd go nutz but who cares if you paid 100 to have that cut on vinyl or 99 cents to have the MP3, the importand thing is that you have it, you can present it properly, and that you had a good enough sence to find that track and use it right. Theres lots of MP3s that are rare and dont get dropped regularly

what don't you see as valid? it's 10000x easier to find sound bites, clips, etc. using mp3 and the internet than digging in the crates to put together a creative routine....that digging is part of what makes the battle, well....a battle.

yes but digging is digging, i can hop over to guitar center and pick up a sample vinyl and run samples everyone has or i can get real in depth in the internet and find a gem that fits perfect or grab one from a movie or something, using digital opens more creative doors and makes this more interesting instead of just hearing the same battle sounds or vinyls that most people have. Besides this is a serato forum so its assumed that the majority spins DV vs vinyl so why limit it to to a vinyl digging compition .

thats what ive been saying, both use what they want if its close we take into consideration what they used, thats the most fair way to do it. If sixx uses all vinyl and they both make a good tape sixxx wins. If sixxx uses vinyl and his tapes horrible and agent uses SL and its above amazing then he wins. The choice on what tools to use should be a part of this test .

Since Agentorange says he DOES have vinyl, each contestant MUST use a minimum of 3 (or X number pre agreed upon by contestants) REAL VINYL records.

If both have been spinning since 1992, it shouldn't be too hard to find 3 to 5 vinyl records to work into the set, even it if its just a Battle record.

I think if Serato is used it does raise the Bar and takes it to another level. Shit I loved Johnny M's set back in the day in his Battle with Sixxx but Serato kicked Johnny's ass.

Using serato is not a DJ Battle. It's a producer battle at that point. With a serato battle you'll get:

Pre-mashed & pre-mixed tracks
Official remixed tracks
Homegrown remixed tracks
Custom edits, acappella outs, intro beats
Serato loops
Serato only EFX like loop an acapella out then hit the (45) button in SSL (i like doing this)
Cue point stabs while juggling
Pre-pitched songs so you don't have to mix with the pitch slider

The list goes on and on. You can't get any of these "features" with regular vinyl.

No, I didn't ask for an all vinyl battle because I thought anyone using Serato had the advantage but rather because I thought it would be more fun this way. Fun... being the keyword here. But, a lot of you on this board forget this nice little word.

No. I feel sorry for you as a DJ if you're a microwave and never got a chance to use vinyl in your DJ life. I also feel sorry for you if you sold or gave all your vinyl away. I wouldn't know.....I would think they've made allowences for that since that's all everyone uses now...

The truth is that, and y'all may HATE it, but no amount of "oh you can't use relative mode", or loops, or whatever digital enhancements you selectively choose to leave out of a battle, the truth is that you've still using some type of "Extra" technology.

The only way it would be "Pure" is if you go back to the original of JUST using 2 TT's and a mixer.

That's it.

And even THAT can be debated...

I'll make a thread about that later, but innovations in technology CONSTANTLY put one person in a better position than another, unless they are both using the same exact setup.

Take for example, the addition of the 1200. You now have a completely sturdy turntable to battle with...

Sometimes I wish some of this stuff never happened. Just knowing both sixxx and Johnny personally, I can honestly say they're both good DJs. I don't get wrapped up in the BS on this board very often (if at all) and I wasn't around during that whole battle thing, but after looking at the whole thing it was a completely lop-sided event which still shows its effects till this day.

I've never built a house, but I know that if your foundation isn't set correctly.. your house will be SCREWED. The foundation of that event wasn't right in the beginning if you ask me, and it shows to this day.

What sucks is that we have 2 great (and knowledgeable) DJs here who can contribute to this forum in many many ways get caught up over some BS which skewed their image/perception to others on this board. Luckily, I'm one of the few that was on the outside and I know these cats for who they are. None of that battle BS or who won or who's better stuff doesn't concern me. I know they're both good and I'm glad I can share ideas or whatever with the both of them. If you're one of the people on here who are swayed towards only one of these DJs (sixxx or Johnny), then you're at a loss one way or another because like I said before... these are BOTH awesome DJs with tons of knowledge and if you don't get the chance to receive from either one of them you're losing out big time.

Nothing can replace the history these guys have been through. That being said, I think the past should be left in the past. If it were up to me, I'd tell you both to stop being childish, play nice, chill with bringing up old shit, chill with the signatures, PMs, emails or whatever. If ignoring one another is the solution, then fine. Just stop insulting one another because I'd hate to see one of you get banned to prevent the creation of useful threads (like the Ortofon one or the organization one) to help educate some of these younger DJs.

Sixxx, cool dude. Some of his views on Dj/Production are much differnet than mine, but at the foundation a lot are the same. We're from the same school of Dj so while we may have gone different directions over the years, we still started in the same place.

The shit between them is between them, the last thing I'm going to concern myself with (when I get a long with both parties) is being biased towards one or the other when in real life, I don't know either one.

I want to play devil's advocate here. I don't know what went on in the past, nor do I know either Sixxx or Johnny (other than chatting with Johnny on Global DJ sessions). But for those of you who don't like either person for whatever reasons and feel that that person should just go away; are you in fact not hating that person? And if you chose to follow that person's threads spewing that sentiment or constantly referring to past threads, how are you any better than that person? I work with at risk teens daily and the one thing that I stress to them daily is that people have different opinions and attitudes. It is not your life's journey to change everyone's view. If you truly disagree, you leave it at that and IGNORE that person. You do not constantly DEBATE with that person. YOU can ONLY control YOU! When I come in contact with a person that for whatever reasons, I disagree with, I avoid that person at all cost or, at the very least, ignore that person whenever possible. This is much harder in the real world where, for purposes of employment, you may have to interact with that person on some level, however; here on an internet forum this IS easiest thing in the world to do.

Well, agentorange has proven once again that he is all talk talk talk.. or rather, type type type... and excuse after excuse after excuse... he can't even come through on his own deadline. So, a few disgruntled spectators asked me to at least post something since agentorange didn't.

We never settled on battle conditions so DO NOT consider this part of ANY BATTLE AGAINST ANYONE. This isn't by any means the extent of my skills (plus it isn't a good idea to open up your vault (no misquote) in case there are any future battles) but I'm going to post this in good faith and also to make the point that IT REALLY DOESN'T TAKE THAT MUCH TO PUT SOMETHING TOGETHER.

Now that i look at it....I've kinda had a change of heart.....

Orangeman did get sucker punched (sort of). I'm sure if he had of known the battle was on, (which is still off apparently- or is it? lol), i'm sure he would have been ready with something by the 8th. Sixxx posted a battle set, but he's not calling it a battle against anyone. Yet it has the most important characteristics. 1) It shows off some of your skill and 2) it was done to show up another dj. Call it what you will. It's an undercover battle!

With that said, orangeman is now sort of at a catch 22. I mean, we all are expecting orangeman to come out and post his battle to show up sixxx. And if he doesn't, well, he looks like a big fat pussy to everyone here, including sixxx. And if he does, well he lost already because he didn't make the imaginary 8th deadline for the imaginary battle lol. But there was no battle to begin with, so why are we expecting anything? We're all hypocrites! hahaha.

I think all those comments up there were probably made to shut up all the spectators or maybe entice sixxx into accepting an official battle where he would say: "FUCK IT, Let's go then. Use your SL. I'll use my vinyl."

Honestly, I've always felt the same way. I remember when sixxx was on stickam... he'd play a lot of dope music, but every now and then he'd so something real quick that was like "whoa... do that again!!" but it wasn't often enough for me. It would always leave you wanting more (which can be a good thing sometimes).

I'm not into skateboarding, but I remember when Tony Hawk was trying to do some kinda spin and he couldn't land it. It was at the X Games or some organized contest. They basically stopped the contest and let him do it over and over and over again until he landed it. He missed like 20 or 30 times or something crazy like that. The moral of that story is I've always been a fan of someone who may be a little sloppy in order to take risks and try something out of the ordinary. If you play it safe all the time, things can get boring (just like discussion on breaking music). I'm not calling anyone boring at all... just stating that I personally don't mind mistakes and I like it if that mistake is due to some awesome shit that's going down at the moment. haha

It's funny cause my first video had the audio jacked up due to recording the audio and video separately and for some reason (I still can't figure it out) the audio drifts from the video when I export it into an mp4. Anyway, I thought to myself, maybe I can film it on stickam SO I HAD TO SIGN UP AGAIN. hahahaha

In the end, I realized that I could record using quicktime. Not as clean as recording with my digital camera but at least the audio and the video didn't drift slightly apart. :)

In retrospect, let's forget about winners and losers, who's better at this...sucks at that...because what we really have witnessed here is the coming together of one of the greatest fraternities in the world.
