msn had an article this morning. What do you think guys?

Timeless. Classic. Reflecting several generations of brides and grooms, these oft-chosen first-dance songs may feature wedding imagery (e.g. "white lace and promises") or the dreamy melodies and heartfelt lyrics one associates with marriage and love. 23. "If I Loved You" (from Carousel)
24. "In My Life" (The Beatles)
25. "It Had To Be You" (Harry Connick, Jr.)

This is a very generic list probably compiled from a few "wedding cd's". The classic's are listed below or should I say the ones people are still using in my neck of the woods.

3. "At Last" (Etta James)
6. "Can't Help Falling In Love" (Elvis Presley)
17. "From This Moment" (Shania Twain & Brian White)
19. "Here And Now" (Luther Vandross)
25. "It Had To Be You" (Harry Connick, Jr.)
35. "The Best Is Yet To Come" (Frank Sinatra)
39. "Unforgettable" (Nat King Cole)
48. "Wonderful World" (Louis Armstrong)
Dj K.Smith 1:33 AM - 3 June, 2006
Here are some that I use:

Forever Mine - O'Jays
The Way You Look Tonight - Rod Stewart
So High - John Legend
For You - Kenny Lattimore
Spend My Life - Eric Benet & Tamia
OG Supernatural 1:41 AM - 3 June, 2006
Ha! Yeah, maybe we should put together a current list of what we are actually using.

I salvaged a few from the above list. However, I don't feel that list reps what people are currently using.

Yes, and no. Those that are familiar with those songs still choose them because they're timeless classics. However, some couples have songs that they are more familiar with and go outside the above list. I had one couple choose a song by Heart because it was their favorite group! But I've seen some pretty crazy choices... including some stuff by King Junior!

BTW, this is typical of most of these lists and books that I have. I've checked out dozens of lists on the internet and a couple books I have on weddings and they all have this same basic list.
Dj K.Smith 4:05 AM - 3 June, 2006
Yeah but whose wedding is that for? 90% of those songs wont fly at a Black wedding... Just curious what was the source of the list?

NBR 12:49 PM - 21 September, 2009
Hey, All:

I'm the DJ that put together that list. I did it for a website that at the time was just starting up. TheKnot.com is now the premier wedding resource on the net.

This was about...hhhmmm...10 or more years ago, and I was asked to include songs that would appeal across the board, regardless of locale or musical taste. Quite a challenge! But my wedding lists have now been widely referenced, quoted, and repeated on television, in the media, and on the web.

Most of this is not anything I would personally play at a wedding, nor any gig for that matter. Especially as I am headquartered in NYC, where tastes or more current and sophisticated. It was only to give people from Arkansas to Zimbabwe an idea of songs they could use in their wedding music selections. I think I did alright.

Cheers to all, and Happy Spinning!

Oh, and for the Record. I was a member of Funkmaster Flex's 'Big Dawg' record pool and have opened and closed for Flex. Technically, I am a Hip Hop DJ...but you gotta know all music. You can't just know one kind, or else you're useless as a DJ.
R-Tistic 3:55 PM - 21 September, 2009
Interesting, I posted on another board asking everyone what their choice would be for a first song. Most are Soul/R&B fans, but there were a lot of good choices on there.

Back when I was doing a few weddings those were the two most common along with the Luther - "Here and Now".
BIG DJ PHAZE 9:47 AM - 22 September, 2009
good shit!
Swizzle 9:05 AM - 24 September, 2009
None the less....it's still a great list.

Just as if you were to compile a 'Party-To-Go' list or a 'Now That's What I Call Music' list...im sure most of the songs chosen aren't gonna be XYZ race's favorite.

To keep this thread alive, maybe we should compile a SL forum list.
I've done a few weddings and besides the Luthers, Nat Kings, and Eta James tracks......these few were and still are very popular:

1. Always - Atlantic Starr
2. Ribbon in the Sky - Stevie Wonder
3. Always and Forever - Heatwave (Original Version)
lakecharlesdjs 12:03 PM - 24 September, 2009
I always tell brides and grooms to pick a song that truly means something to them as a couple and not the most popular song out right now. I tell them to think 50 years down the road and imagine themselves dancing to their song at a surprise anniversary party thrown by their children or loved ones.

This way I'm not playing the same country song every Saturday night.
Felonyruckus 12:30 PM - 24 September, 2009
Not only do I DJ but, I'm a dance instructor too, when the couple has questions of what their first dance should be to, I always ask what their grandparents danced to, then it keeps it cool and classy. I always ask though if they want to change it up and make it fun at the end with a different more upbeat song. I hate and dread the "6th Grade" dance for 3 1/2 mins.

I did that list in the mid 90's for Theknot.com when it first started up. The list is now at least 15 years old and The Knot has not asked me to update it, although it is still often referenced in the media.
