It would be handy to have a timer display in SDJ so when you're practicing and creating a routine you can gauge the length of the routine.

It's already there. It's called the record button. ;)

No, this would independent of recording. This would just be a timer you can see.

+1 for this but it would have to be a little more useful than just a timer to warrant having this and the recording timer. I'd find it useful if we could set it to auto start based off of a noise threshold or waiting for a deck to start playing. I'd also think it would be good if it could give some sort of indication of time passing. Some how alerting the user every time two minutes has passed out something. Would also be good to have a countdown option as well.
