Choosing powered speakers for this new year 2016

Smoke21 9:56 PM - 5 January, 2016
Hey guys, so Ive decided to set a goal and get new speakers for my mobile dj. Now i want to buy and it be worth it for a few years to come... Upgrading from qsc and ev elx series. Any suggestions. Thanks ... Looking at RCF (dont know which series and model?) jbls or the new EVs ETX line... Thanks any suggestions would be greatly appreciated
Joee 12:30 AM - 6 January, 2016
all lines you're looking at have some great options, what are you looking to spend?

what are your main uses for these new speakers?
Smoke21 12:50 AM - 6 January, 2016
Private events... Weddings, sweet 16s etc...
Joee 12:53 AM - 6 January, 2016
how many people max? you're budget?
Smoke21 3:19 AM - 6 January, 2016
200-250... Well looking to spend about 3000 something that im going to pay and be worth... Ive been with EV since my first pair of elx 115p, didnt go with the qsc because at high volume they tend to peak and sound not so good if not with a sub... But like i said want to upgrade to something thats going to be worth the money
The Return of Dj Sparky 3:26 AM - 6 January, 2016
just cut to the chase Joee and recommend him some nice RCF's, or has their check not cleared this month?

Is the 3000 for a set of tops only, or tops and 1 or 2 subs? Do you want something that can be used at times without subs, or will you always use a sub or two?
Smoke21 4:32 AM - 6 January, 2016
Well with one sub for now and looking for a set that when i dont need subs just use tops and have no issues.
Smoke21 4:33 AM - 6 January, 2016
And they sound great as well..
desmorider 4:55 AM - 6 January, 2016
Good quality 15's will run you between $1100-$1300 each, not leaving you much for a subwoofer. This would be like etx15sp,srx15p,and art745a. Another good option would be yamaha dsr115 or dxr15, they would most likely leave you with enough cash for a good sub. Are you located in the USA? If so, you can find dxr15 for under $650, and dsr115 for under $825 each. Dxs18 sub for just under $1050. So a great combo would be 2 dsr115's and one dxs18 sub for just under $2700, if you are in the USA.
Smoke21 5:01 AM - 6 January, 2016
Yes, im in the U.S. Now ive been debating between the new ETX line and the RCF but rcf has alot of models and would like to know which is best in the rcf line?
Smoke21 5:03 AM - 6 January, 2016
Some say HD series some say the 7 series... Any help on that?
desmorider 5:15 AM - 6 January, 2016
I don't think they make a 15in in the hd line. I think the largest is the hd32a which is a 12. I wouldn't want to use only a set of 12's at a party. Great if you always bring the sub(s), but you said you wanted something that you could rock sometimes without subs. I would get a set of 15's for that. The hd32a's are very nice speakers.
Smoke21 6:20 AM - 6 January, 2016
What do people think about the ETX line?? Any opinions or personal experience also vs the rcf hd series is the rcf better or about the same ?
Joee 1:19 PM - 6 January, 2016
in you're price range

one yamaha dxs18 or qsc kw181 & two yamaha dxr12

one ev ekx18sp & two ev exk 12p or one ev ekx18sp & two ev ekx12p

one rcf sub 708-as II & art 312-a

either one of these setups will serve you well ,now if you had a few more dollars to spend

one ev etx18sp & two ev etx12p or one ev ekx18sp & two ev ekx12p

fixed

the ekx is just a cheaper option for you, first post was a typo
Joee 3:47 PM - 6 January, 2016
"Hey, thanks for you responses on the post, now i could be wrong but i see the hd32a vs the etx and while the rcf has 1400 watts and etx has 2000 what make the rcfs a better speaker... Can you guide me into what to look for in a speaker, meaning spec wise. Thanks much appreciated"

don't pay too much attention to those max power ratings there what every manufactures claims is a 2000 watt speaker is more like 400 watt

what makes the hd32 better than the etx12p is

rcf hd32-a 3 inch compression driver / horn

ev etx12p 1.25 inch compression driver / horn

the bigger horn will play louder cleaner & throw sound farther
Smoke21 4:04 PM - 6 January, 2016
Thanks for the guidance much appreciated

How about the hd32-A alone without a sub, does the hd32-A have good lows or would i absolutely need subs??? Thanks

kind of a yes and now answer ,the speaker sounds good on it's own

but a system that has a sub with have a night and day difference vs one that doesn't , short answer if you want the best sounding system you can have use a sub
Smoke21 12:49 AM - 8 January, 2016
So you would say for an event of 100-150 the hd32-a wouldnt be good on its own but i would need a sub?
Joee 12:54 AM - 8 January, 2016
I've done 100/150 people parties with just two 12"…….it's all dependent on what you are trying to achieve

let me make it simple for you, you could buy a $4,000 set if 12" top & they will sound great

you could buy a set of $1,000 tops & a $1,000 sub, the cheaper system will sound better because it has a dedicated sub woofer …..IMO
Joee 12:56 AM - 8 January, 2016
FYI, $2,500 gets you two yamaha dxr12 & one yamaha dxs18 sub, a killer system
Smoke21 1:02 AM - 8 January, 2016
Thats whay im looking for a killer system.. A system that i wouldnt have to worry about until a few years later... How would say be a comparison yamaha vs etx?
DJ Guayo 4:47 AM - 8 January, 2016
I have the the HD32a and while I love them with subs the bottom end is lacking standalone.
benictrs 12:01 PM - 8 January, 2016
I also own a pair of HD32a's and use them together with 8004-as at 200+ events , At smaller events like 150 person they go together with my newly purchased RCF sub 705asmk2's and stand alone i have used them at 50-80 person events .
But even one 15 sub is a good companion for them in order to have a better sound .
HD32's sound realy good and go pretty loud .

Solid performers and an upgrade from your elx and qsc's. Do you have any places near you to test drive a few different speakers? Speakers are like the sneaker game, what one person loves, others might hate. Depends on what your ears tell you.

Hey all,
I am also in the market to purchase a pair of 2 12" powered speakers. Just the tops for now, will most likely rent subs for the next little while before purchasing them. Im working with a budget of $3,500 - $4,000.
So far I'm looking at these, any additions, and feedback would be very helpful:

QSC K12
Yamaha DXR15
Bose F1
Electro-Voice ZLX-12P 12
Certified Quality Entertainment 8:31 PM - 4 April, 2016
^^ With that budget you can certainly get a much better grade speaker than the ones you listed.

You can look into EV ZXA or ETX or the RCF 745.

Joee what do you think about the rcf hd32 as a standalone for a 150 person wedding. I'm looking at those or another pair of yamaha dxr15 (had them in the past but sold them). I just sold my yamaha dxr12s because they weren't being used as much as my rcf fd12a. I also use my pair of yamaha dxr8s with a ev ekx15sp for weddings of that size but i'm looking at giving myself other options based on the venue.
Joee 12:34 PM - 5 April, 2016
just think fd12 on steroids

I'm surprised you sold the dxr12, i think it beast the fd12, but the fd has a warmer sound quality maybe thats way you've been using it more?

I have a pair of yamaha dxr8s that i use with subs. When crossed the dxr8 and 12 sound very similar so to save space i use the dxr8 more often. I'm just curious to know what the bass output is like for the rcf hd32a? I'll be placing an order today for either the yamaha dxr15, rcf hd12a or the rcf hd32a
Rebelguy 4:17 PM - 5 April, 2016
The bass out of the HD32As is similar to the other 12 inch plastic cabinet boxes. It's not going to beat the DXR15. If you want a 12 inch cabinet with good low end and a 3 inch HF driver then pick up the JBL SRX812Ps.

i would stay away from the g2, for about $800 to $850 you can get two of these

theres also these i'm not sure how much they will come down in price

The Yamaha dxr15s are incredible. I had them before but didn't appreciate what they bring to the table. For wedding type gigs for up to 150 people they definitely do a great job. I had a chance to use them twice this weekend and i'm so impressed by the bass response for a speaker on stands. A pair of yamaha dxr15s on sticks sound as good as my pair of yamaha dxr8s and a ev ekx15sp. It's always better to have a sub but the yamaha dxr15s can definitely do the job.
Al Poulin 2:18 AM - 18 April, 2016
Yeah, my DXR15s are still my speakers of choice for smaller weddings and parties. Any gig that pays well and is over 100 people usually get my bigger DXR8s over DXS12 subs system, but for the smaller stuff, the DXR15s really are tough to beat. They simply sound SO GOOD with playback music. I basically use them in my "studio" for all of my music listening, I like them so much.

Before the DXR15s, my Yorkville NX55Ps were my go to speakers for general music listening at home and small gigs, and while they do sound as good and full as the DXR15s at lower voilumes, they simply couldn't put out (and maintain their quality sound) once higher levels were required, so once I reviewed the DXR15s, my choice to trade them in was made.

Many things like the controller I was using and not running my controller through an external mixer. Using an external mixer gives me more head room which makes the speakers sounds better this time around.

Hey I love the discussion. I am an active duty a Marine stationed overseas so it is very hard for me to get these kinds of items shipped over. Max weight for military mail is 70lbs, so any active speaker under that weight will do. For those of you who are experienced in they was of the Active speaker talk. I have my eye on the JBL SRX815P(63lbs). I have nothing to compare it to so for those of you with the knowledge of the other brands (Yamaha, RCF, EV) please way in your thoughts given the price range. The Active JBL SRX815P is priced at $1399 but you can find it as low as $1199 on some websites. If anyone knows of any better deals I am open to them. Thank you in Advance.

Thanks for the feedback on these items I will look into the RCF brand. Additionally I do know that powered subs are an even bigger issue(weight). Do you guys know of any online sites that will ship internationally to Japan?

I can always go to the Chinese website and get any pair of knock off speakers but if no one else is using them then I will not feel comfortable in ordering something I haven't heard.

maybe try Yamaha speakers.

They are good quality and are a Japanese company so there should be a presence in Japan.

The DXR tops are great and the DXS18 sub is getting rave reviews.

I've had my RCF ART 745-A's for about 6 months now and wow are they loud! For bigger gigs I've paired them with 2 Yorkville LS801P's, and since I don't have a crossover I run the RCF's in full range and they still leave the subs way behind, they never seem to peak. I could probably have 4 Yorkville's and the 2 RCF's and the subs still wouldn't keep up (just a guess).

In the near future I plan on buying the matching subs, which ones do you recommend? the 8004-AS?

I personaly use this combo and i'm very happy with it . but my opinion is that for the 745 art it would take two 8004's/side . The 8004 is perfect with my hd32a's .
JDforKing 1:56 AM - 4 June, 2016
What size event would a pair of art 745 cover.
benictrs 2:40 AM - 4 June, 2016
I only use them on FLAT and i have made events up to 80-120 pers with them without subs , but i have made events with 60'ish persons using two hd32's and one 8004 sub so it's pretty much irelevant .
I believe you could make events for older folks who dont realy want much bass from 100-160 person events without the adition of subs , but if you have younger people who want the "club feeling " it's a no brainer you will need subs .
i think that one 745 can lead the mid/high for two 8004's .
But it depends on your clients what they want for their event . . . . loud mids/highs & no bass or the fuller better experience .

There are far too many variables and personal expectations of a speaker to put a real number on it without at least of providing details on its intended use.

For example a wedding DJs expectations would vary greatly from a party DJ like myself who requires club volume with 4 subs like the rcf8004 as previously mentioned.

But for MY particular expectations and usage, I would rate them at 300 people for (no subs required) wedding type events. For a party dj at club volume type events, I would rate them at 600 with 4 rcf8004 subs. Your mileage may vary.......

I'm surprised no one mentioned anything about the Yorkville ps15p.

Great speaker nonetheless, but I think that there are better options out there for a similar price range.

Recently bought 2x JBL SRX835p and 2x JBL SRX812p

Amazing speakers, would really love to see how they hold up to the EV ETX series & Yamaha DSR Series. Was going to buy the Yamaha DSR's but got a better deal on the JBL's so went with them instead.

Hello, I'm also looking to upgrade my speakers. I own a pair of Mackie SA1532z dual 15 and a pair of mackie SRM450 V2.. I have had these for a few years now and the sound pretty good. What do you think about these speakers and about mackie in general? sin no one has mentioned them. The main reason I want to change them is because I got tired of carrying the big mackies. I want to have a set of 4 tops and probaly one or two subs.

Thanks,

Everything depends on your budget, but if you want the best in the average consumer market, look into the following brands/setups:

Yamaha DXR/DSR & Yamaha DXS18
EV ETX
JBL SRX
RCF

Tell us some more about your budget, this will help get you some better suggestions=

I ready almost all of the posts until the OP had decided on saving money with the Yamaha and then I wondered why nobody ever brought up the Art 745a from RCF and compared CROSSOVER POINT. Somebody hinted at it, and mentioned that a better tweeter would throw more sound. I spent $2000 on a subwoofer back in the day that had a 4" voice coil on an 18" driver. For $1400 (much less if you're a bitch and play distributors against each other) you can get a 15" two way box with a 4" voice coil on the HORN and a 600hz crossover point! 600! Not 1600, not 1650! 600! Imagine what it sounds like when the woofer isn't bothered with TREBLE?! I don't have to imagine. I had JBL's top of the line speaker, and bought the RCF entry range and couldn't tell the difference. I sold my JBL (easy) and bought the RCF top of the line. Now I don't want to use my entry level RCF and everybody tells me they sound phenomenal.

Which top of the line JBL cabinet did you have?

If you couldn’t tell the difference between the two why did you feel the need to sell the JBL and go RCF?

Which RCF tops? With most of the rcf boxes you need a sub with a built in hi pass out crossover, or an external crossover.

What is the exact entry range rcf you have, and what is model of your top of the line rcf?

Talkng about the hd32a and the art 745???
Smoke21 8:08 PM - 24 October, 2017
ANd which subs would you recommend for rcf tops that have a built in hi pass crossover ???
dj_soo 9:15 PM - 24 October, 2017
popular brands with built in crossovers would be RCF and JBL (and Mackie, but I doubt anyone here would recommend Mackie Subs).

The Yamaha DXS18 has a high pass out, but they probably won't keep up with the 745s unless you had like 6 of them.

The go to recommendation would be the RCF 8004, but that's pretty pricey. The JBL SRX828 is highly recommended as well.

Thanks @dj_soo

ANyone here would say the JBL SRX 815 would be upto the same league as the RCF art 745???
dj_soo 6:23 AM - 26 October, 2017
I've never heard them (or the 745s tbh), but the 3" woofer will probably make it close to the 745 in clarity and throw.

The Yamaha DSRs also get a lot of love on hear for output and clarity for the price with its 2" voice coil.

I guess it all boils down to the large high voice coil that really helps with throw and clarity as it takes a load off the woofer on the top.

The new Yorkville EF12P and EF500P tops also have 3" voice coils now and are looking to compete in that market.

Same situation here, I am planning to buy a new set of speakers. What do you guys think about the Bose F1 PA Package". I am a mobile DJ I perform at mid size events, you know the typical: i.e. weddings, sweet 16, etc. sometimes people have guest artists and small bands that I also, provide Audio. I am debating about these BOSE and the RCFs.
I would really appreciate any advise.

How good are the 708 as mk2 subs could it handle medium to large size venues?
dj_soo 10:42 PM - 1 January, 2018
basing it off the specs, I have a similar class sub and would say max 200 people at quieter, wedding volumes (where not all 200 are expected on the dancefloor at once).

Small room dance party, maybe 100 people. For a large room like a school dance, it's going to peter out and limit long before you get it to the level you'd want.
Smoke21 11:32 PM - 1 January, 2018
And how about basing off the specs of the 8003 mk2 or 8004? Thanks
platinum0101 10:30 PM - 15 August, 2018
try the Pyrit 212a powered sub
trust me these double 12"s hit hard, a good sub doesn't need hardly any EQ

The Pyrit 212A sub would match most of the branded one if not top some of them still.

Personaly own 4 piece rcf 8004 and i'm real happy with them . Planinng on purchasing another two .
The first two i bought in 2014 and these baby's had their share of abuse , and are still rocking the dancefloor .
About the pyrit , well we did order a pair of those but we send them back because we dod not like them .
In our test two Pyrit 12a's could not keep up with one rcf sub 705mk2 .
