Would you DJ for $10 an hour?
Joee 4:55 PM - 4 June, 2015
NO……but i'm sure there will be plenty of people that will be more than happy to take that job

i.e a young kid with a controller playing music for 8 hours vs him working BK, Micky D's, Old Navy, Gap etc. makes less while doing more work
Mr.Jace 5:05 PM - 4 June, 2015
I only hope its not elevator music. Lol
 6 5:17 PM - 4 June, 2015
There are plenty of "DJ's" out there that "DJ" for $10 an hour so I'm sure they'll get plenty of applicants.

For a younger kid up n coming this could be good as open format practice..... Sure the payment isn't great but what are you excepting from Walmart??

It could broaden his/her music knowledge because I'm sure they'd have to play everything under the sun.

Now what's not said is if they are actually mixing or just a press play DJ.

I wouldn't take the gig but I don't think it's not that and besides we don't know the full details.....

Flame away 🔥

Yessir, got a few around my way...

Ok, the CROWD may leave something to be desired, but real talk?

What KID would pass up an opportunity to be PAID to play in front of people?

He'd be the DJ don of High School.

Walmart and malls are where the kids are at....if they're not in front of a video game...

If I'm not mistaken, the DJ is streaming to stores. Pretty much a guy programming a playlist in some office somewhere (or at home). Or maybe it's mixing. A streamed mix vs a cd on loop in-store. But I really don't think they meant a live in-store DJ.

See, this makes more sense but I hope the pay is better than $10 then.

Yeah, if that's the case then $10 is really ridiculous!

Funny thing is on the weekends my wife and I do Promotions for Walmart. When they open up a new Neighborhood Mart or sometimes a Super Center we go out with a team and do a "cook out" in the parking lot with free food, giveaways and music. Part of my job is to make playlists and mixes that are family friendly and appropriate for a Walmart cook out. When we first started the original suggestion was to just play the Now That's What I Call Music CD, but that got old real quick.

It works out pretty well for me since we travel through out the South East and I get a chance to drop off my mix CDs to the locals.

Apples & Oranges, really. Walmart has a much wider, less tolerant customer base. Imagine some kid DJ coming in with his own music playing what he thinks is relevant - Bees In The Trap, CoCo, 3 hrs of solid EDM, etc... Having programmed music is a great idea but a place like Walmart has to do it right. The people who can do this right will not work for $10/hr, or anywhere near that.

I must admit. I didn't read the article either. Fuck a Walmart. Can't stand that place. Won't go near it unless they absolutely carry something I can't get anywhere else and it's not in their online store.

But it's Walmart. It's expected they will pay shit.

The very few times I've stepped foot into a WalMart I've been amazed by the number of morbidly obese people in the place. Both the workers and the customers.

I can't imagine any "value add" from hiring someone to "program" or "DJ" the music in there. The only reason anyone goes there is that it's cheap, right? Or that it's the only store in some smaller towns after the populace foolishly abandoned the old locally owned stores when WalMart moved into the area?

My brother in a Wal-Mart manager. He sees this all the time too. A few times he actually addressed customers directly about proper attire and habits. His biggest issue (literally) is his employees though. Some are rather large! A lot of places are setting up diet and exercise programs to address the obesity. I wonder if a DJ can play "Sweat Into the Oldies" for an hour or so during break times?

If your mix is being played to 2.2 million employees every day and 260 million customers every week globally and you get some drops or get to throw in some exclusive remixes that come up with your name on Shazam then you might want to take that $. Plus, you're the corporate DJ for a company that does 482 Billion in sales each year and in 2014 was #1 on the Fortune 500 list of the world’s largest companies by revenue. My guess is that you won't be seeing any unknowns "on the air" and the promoted DJs will be your usual big name headliners...
Logisticalstyles 1:32 PM - 12 June, 2015
I doubt there will be any actual mixing or DJ drops. I think the "DJ" they are referring to is just gonna be somebody that is in charge of the music programming. They just need someone to choose better music than Justin Beiber or Celine Dion.

I def disagree. They'll have a big name doing a radio talk over between tracks. Probably will be no mixing involved
DJ Remy USA 3:48 PM - 12 June, 2015
you think Walmart is gonna take it that deep? I mean if they do take it that deep and get some big name its gonne be Calvin harris, tiesto, Atrak, some Euro guy or at least Euro accepted guy, or better yet Pete Tong will be the host.

It wont even have to be a dj. They could get Jessica simpson to record a few comments and just play the recorded comments in between songs. Its not like this will be a live performance. Remember, just because wethink of "club dj" when we hear the word dj dosent mean the name dosent apply to howard stern lol
