NONE of my crowd would have been there...

Not interested in that type of music at all.

That clip gave me the most news I've EVER heard of regarding this guy. I remember hearing about some dude jumping off of a stage and landing on some chicks neck or whatever, but kept moving.

Hell, she was even AT the concert and didn't know who he was.

That's ALL EDM related, the number of F*cks given regarding that is being brought to you by the number ZERO.

OK class... sit down and pay attention. It's time for a lesson (whether you like it or not).

By a show of hands, how many of you have ever eaten at a Benihana restaurant? You? You... ok you... uh huh. Then you've put money in Aoki's pocket. How you ask? Well, Steve Aoki's father was none other than Hiroaki (Rocky) Aoki, a Japanese wrestler and founder of Benihana. en.wikipedia.org

You may have also seen Steve's sister, Devon, if you've seen the movies 2 Fast 2 Furious, Sin City or War. en.wikipedia.org

When he started DJing in the 1990's, he was referred to as Kid Millionaire because, well... he was one. He came up in Santa Barbara and started Dim Mak records. en.wikipedia.org

To say you haven't heard of him until now is just an admission that you don't venture outside of your little world musically.

Class dismissed.

No, this is some West Coast EDM fanboyism.

Nobody over here and doesn't listen to that BS called EDM would care.

If you're into Soulful or Classic House, you wouldn't care to follow him...AT ALL.

Most cats that play Soulful or Classic House music completely DE-TEST EDM in all it's forms, as it's "Pop" or "Wanna Be" house music, so following a representative of that genre would make ZERO sense.

Also, he's EDM fed, and there are MILLIONS who love EDM, so THOSE are his followers.

Not "Everybody" listens to or follows EDM.

I do know of that dude who wears the Mickey Mouse head, is he more famous than him?

He's not a "Pop" icon, like say Paris Hilton, or Pauly D who tabloids generally get a kick out of slamming on a national scale.

For example, how many of you actually know who DJ Lo Down Loretta Brown is?

Now as for the hate? That dude is getting paid to hit people with CAKE, and he's CAKING OFF at that?

Man look, CASH THAT CHECK.

I'm not mad.

I doubt too many of you, including me even, has ventured too much into stuff that we don't have a reason to play.

That's probably why I never really ventured into the "current" EDM stuff - not my type of audience. Sure, I played some house music back in the 90's which was probably about the same amount I venture into every now and again.

Now, the Aoki stuff just goes to the trash just like lots of other garbage I get from many other genres of music.

You beat me to it. I was gonna say his sister is supposedly rich too. That's how he really got on.

I will say he does care a little bit though, because he talked about it. I'm sure there are even djs on his "level" of success that don't really respect his stuff.

I personally LOVE DJing. I know my love for it would be ruined if I did weddings full time and that's why I don't.

Some of us already make good money and don't really need to take everything that comes to them. Sure making a lot of money is great, but I also like having fun and I won't take any gig because it pays a lot. I already have a good paying job and I enjoy djing for fun AND getting paid. Not just getting paid.

I've done just about any type of gig including many weddings. I don't like weddings even if I choose them carefully. It's an all ages event. I don't like doing all ages event because inevitably, I would have to play music I refuse and or don't like to play.

" so thats it than? you don't do weddings so as not to play music you refuse to play?"

No. That's not it but since you're asking and are interested in what I do or don't do.

1. I don't like doing all ages event because inevitably, I would have to play shitty music at one point or another.

2. I don't like dressing up. If I did, I would get a job at a 9-5.

3. I freelance for a living.... and I can do what I do from anywhere. Many times, I'm earning money WHILE fishing. I couldn't do that if I had to do a wedding or an all ages event.

4. I live in Cali. Most weddings happen in warm weather. Dressed up, outside doing an event with 100+ degree weather. No thanks. EVEN IF IT'S AN INDOOR EVENT and it's air conditioned inside... I still have to load up shit and be sweating. No thanks. - and even when I have a roadie - which I usually do. Still, no thanks. lol

5. No self respecting DJ ever said "I'm a wedding DJ". This does not apply to those who do all kinds of other shit and just happen to do weddings too.

6. I don't do gigs I don't enjoy doing.... which is why I wouldn't do other types of gigs that I know I wouldn't enjoy even if they're not all ages events.

7. I ONLY DJ WITH TURNTABLES..... you won't catch me with a controller, and hence... I won't do weddings. A lot of wedding DJ's get lazy and start worrying too much about what NOT TO BRING or how to compensate for "I will only be mixing anyway" or whatever.

8. Again, I LOVE DJing and I know I would hate it if I HAD to take gigs just for the money. If that's all you do for a living, I know you HAVE to take whatever comes your way. You said so even if you later tried to take it back.

9. I'm my own boss in all situations, being DJing at a club, a bar, a concert or whatever. I choose to be my own boss. Doing a wedding, you're not EVER your own boss.
...

and I could probably keep going but I'm heading to the beach so I must get ready.... lol

well you have to know how to handle those types of people

i simply hit them with the yes you controls everything, i even have a clause in my contract that says so

"3. Purchaser Responsibilities:
Purchaser shall at all times have complete control, direction and supervision of Performance. Purchaser expressly reserves the right to control the manner, means, and details of Performance. A written event/music planner or music request list must be received by Dj at least two weeks prior to the date of Performance in order to be included in the programming guidelines. With or without the aid of an event/music planner or music request list, DJ shall attempt to play Purchaser's and Purchaser's guests' music requests, but shall not be held responsible if certain selections are unavailable. Dj will make an extra effort to have music requests available if they are received in writing at least two weeks prior to Performance."

now once the event comes up and people are having a good time, they tend to forget about the you have to do this & that etc…. at least in my experience it does

What I will say to you Joee, I personally am not mad at all, get yours brother. However, you did make it sound you taking all gigs meant you actually DJ'ed all of them. Which to me sounded very unlikely that you enjoyed all of them. Everyone has those gigs they kind of hate no matter how much money you get paid.

Which goes into why some of us are contempt with having a main source of income and giving us the freedom of turning down things we have no interest in doing no matter the price. Peace of mind over money. I personally, have no interest in DJing a sweet 16. To me that's torture lol. I rather stay home and relax.

In hindsight it makes perfect sense that you "take em all" because you're not the one necessarily dealing with the headache. You're just collecting the funds or your cut. Like a manager or booking agent.

I've been djing club for the better part of 20 years

that contract makes them feel good like o yea he doing what i want, when in actuality i do what i want…….the contract is more for private events most club owners look at you like your crazy if you whip it out….

thats your opinion, but did you ever stop to think that maybe the dj i'm giving the gig to is happy i'm doing so? how many people can say they make for example $400 for 4 hours of work & didn't have to do anything but show up? some instances i provide all the equipment

now if you have to bring your own gear the pay goes up, either way there happy with it i'm always strait up tell them what i charge & what there cut is ,they don't have the clientele i do

Okay. So you do tell them. That's what I'm saying. If the DJ is aware of that and he knows he is working for an employer (cause there really what you are at this point) then yeah. I'm cool with that.

Again, you need to clarify yourself. First you made it seem you DJed all goods and then you made it look like you violated the DJ code and good business sense. Even Johnny was shaking his head and his our buddy! lol

I'm sure he is also aware that he does not give a fuck, laughs all the way to the bank and then gets in his big car, drives to his big house and hops on his 1200's and spins what ever the fuck he actually enjoys spinning and there isn't a cake in sight (except the one he is eating).

Absolutely.

Perfect example...

Pdidy was gonna BRING A FULL SETUP to a jawn you had scheduled for Sunday that JUST PASSED...

So if that would have panned out, and you would have saved on SOMETHING, be it labor, moving van or whatever...

You're saying you wouldn't have broke him off with whatever savings you would have incurred because of him doing you a solid?

Sound man or DJ 101. You're supposed to check the gain levels before turning on the equipment. I always do that for mixer, amp (if there is one) and speakers if they're powered.

Tell your boy to check the sound man/DJ manual. lol

Hey fellas,

This thread went WAY off topic but as always, very entertaining. Just thought I would add some insight from someone who has DJ’d in clubs, and now DJs 98% weddings. 1st off, not all wedding DJs can transition and DJ in a club…and be good at it! Me, I’m one that could and still do every once in a while. Most can’t. I would say that this applies more the other way around though… in my opinion. I am friends with some of the best club DJs in my city and I KNOW 100% without a doubt they SUCK at DJing weddings, and the few times before I figured that good club DJs don’t always translate into good wedding DJs, I got burned because of it when I booked them under my DJ company name. There is just way too much going on at a wedding for MOST club DJs to handle. I’m not saying there aren’t exceptions, but for the most part I would put money that a club DJ who goes and tries to DJ an “upscale” reception(by upscale I mean not one at a community center where you can treat it as a club and no one will care)…I’m talking about one where the couple paid you $1799 to DJ…the typical club DJ would most of the time screw something up. Just too many wheels spinning all at once. This is why it is hard to find a GOOD wedding DJ and in general just saying the word “wedding DJ” makes us all picture a guy in a tux with a bow tie and a cheesy ass voice who plays the Macarena, Hokey Pokey, and Chicken Dance. Most guys that are professional enough to handle the multi-tasking and organization aspect of putting on a “production” that we call a wedding and truly running a business are just not “cool” in the eyes of most club DJs. And most club DJs that aren’t “D-bags”, aren’t professional enough to keep everything it takes to DJ over 60 weddings per year organized and never drop the ball, and run your own company. Job of a club DJ in general once you have the job: Show up, plug laptop in, read crowd, mix, drink, mix, drink drink, get bj behind booth, mix, unplug, go home. Am I missing something? Job of a wedding DJ, one that truly does it right, involves e-mailing contracts, meeting with couple to figure out if you’re a good fit for each other, have a 30 day pre-reception meeting face to face to customize itinerary and talk about music, keeping track of deposits/payments, what other options were booked with your DJ services and make sure they are ready…uplighting, photo booth, secure one of your booth attendants to work the booth, monogram, video projectors, etc., load up equipment, unload, set up DJ equipment, photo booth, uplighting, monogram projector, etc, complete sound check of DJ equipment, check of photo booth(props, paper, printer), and make sure wireless DMX software is programmed for grand entrance, cake cutting, and formal dances(might as well take advantage of moving heads), maintaining a good rapport with the couple(no one wants to work with an asshole), help keep the flow of the reception moving smoothly, and make sure everything is organized…all night…EVERY time. When you get paid $1799 for a reception, you can’t mess up by not replying(or taking 2 to 3 days to reply) to e-mails/texts, not have certain music, be a cheese ball on the mic, mess something up on the itinerary. These couples are picky and you literally cannot mess up anything. And if you're a true professional you are 100% ok with that and expect that from yourself anyways. When you charge $1800, you better follow through….EVERY time. I’m guessing…and this is just a guess…that most guys on here clownin on Joee don’t charge $1800 to DJ a reception. And if you genuinely wouldn’t take a reception even if you had to play a few songs you don’t like, then hey, you have the right to do that and if taking a stand is that important to you, who can say you’re wrong for that? Me, I can make almost any reception even fun for me so I rarely turn down any weddings…they just pay too much when it’s all said and done to do that. For me, $1799 to DJ, then $750 for the photo booth, another $400 for uplighting, and just there alone I made damn near $3000 in about 20 hours total worth of work. Sorry, but I’m just not turning that kind of money down myself. I can honestly say that at most weddings I DJ, I do about 30 minutes of old school(Temptations, Earth, Wind, and Fire, Whispers, Gap Band, BeeGees, etc), then I slowly start to mix in some “light” hip-hop, and in the last hour I'm on to Jeezy, Kanye, some DJ Unk, a little Biggie, some 50, a little errrybody in the club get Tipsy, some Q-Tip, I drop some Wanna Be a Baller, some Youuuu, you got what I neeeeed, some Snoop, even some Move Bitch. So I don’t get where so many people think weddings suck. Sorry but not for me.

So, why not keep an open mind about it? Not everyone DJs “just for fun”, and not everyone DJs to make a living. Neither is wrong. Some people seem to be doing it more as a business and if clients are happy with it, and the DJ is happy with what he does, I don’t see anything wrong with that? I myself book 65 or so weddings per year, my wife does about 15(because we have 3 kids and apparently they need some attention too, lol) and I split another 40 between my other 2 DJs. I usually charge $1100 for one of my other guys, and I keep $200. They know EXACTLY how much I charge and how much I’m keeping. Most of the time I also book more uplighting for their reception and/or the photo booth, so I make even more by booking them. I’m a DJ/entrepreneur who also wants to make money while doing this and I won’t apologize for that. Anyways, my DJs are happy, I’m happy, everyone eats. Just some insight from someone who handles the wedding DJ game, and who has mad respect for the club DJ. The true scratching DJs out there do AMAZING things and have skills on turntables that I will never have. I have a lot of respect for them and the hard work it took to get where they are. Wouldn’t it be something if a true mixing/scratching DJ would say the same thing about a wedding DJ? It will just never happen and that’s ok. : )

I guess the promoter or venue HAS TO supply the 2-3 person inflatable Raft along with 2 CUSTOM FLAT CAKES that say Dim Mak on it.

See, the cakes are "promotion for the label"

Why does that dude want the promoters to buy him six pairs of underwear? Does he suffer from anal seepage or something?

When you are on tour fresh socks, draws, t-shirts is necessary if for whatever reason you dont have time to stop at wallmart. But in this case yes, he probably has an anal problem. lol

And if you're a true professional you are 100% ok with that and expect that from yourself anyways.

a professional wedding DJ.

If you'd compared a professional club DJ to a professional wedding DJ you would be surprised to see that there are more similarities than you thought! The professional club DJ also has to prepare himself, prepare his sets, dig music, network, do social media advertisement, keep track of payments and yada yada ya, and don't forget: He needs to stay on top of all the current cake trends to make sure that he picks the right one for his gigs ;)))

Cake selection is a very important part of the set, so you want to make sure that the cake is soft with no dense or crunchy ingredients and nothing sharp, not even the cardboard it sits on. When flung from the stage a cake travels at speeds sometimes edging on 50-60 miles per hour and a sharp cardboard can cut some ones head off and that would spoil the set requiring the dj to ride more rafts and preform at least three more Jesus poses, maybe more if the decapitation is particularly bloody.

I gotta agree with Nik here (cant believe I just said yet). Ive been a resident DJ (for several clubs) for about about 8 years straight now. Wed through Sun. My job entails a shit ton more than hitting play. Im in charge of designing flyers, maintaining the facebook pages, booking guest DJs, comming up with even themes, working with promoters, doing radio spots to promote, setting up and maintaining sound and lighting, sound guy when other DJs are in, I DEF have to keep track of payments, ect ect. You can sit there and say you wont do this or that all day just like a ton of other Djs that Ive seen come and go but with the amount of compitition now adays thats what it takes to stay at the top.

Someone has to do it. That's part of you running your own business, which you do as a professional DJ. Someone has to do the work. If you're really big, someone else from your team will take care of this. If you'Re not big enough, then you're a one man army, and you have to do this by yourself. Either way - it *has* to be done. If you (or your team) is not doing it I would say you're just too small and don't qualify as being a professional DJ.

You - not specifically you. You in general.

At risk of derailing this thread, I thought I'd explain the situation(s)...
When a professional vendor (DJ, photographer, etc) shows up at an event, they are expected to perform their duties to the fullest. When a situation arrises where additional work needs to be done, I don't want to be the guy who sits around and says "It's not MY job." and watches his clients scramble around trying to figure out how to serve 400 guests or find enough clean plates for dessert. The vendors that only perform their minimum duties will surely get paid, but rarely will get hired back or recommended in that type of situation. The ones who step up and go beyond the call of duty are the ones that get the business floodgates opened to them.

I'm not saying I look for these gigs, nor do I particularly enjoy them, but helping people out who need it is part of my business ethics... even if it goes beyond what you can expect from just the DJ.

To tie this in to the thread at hand, how many celebrity DJs would rise to the occasion and lend a hand rather than stand there and gawk/blame everyone else for the shortcomings?
The Return of Dj Sparky 11:34 PM - 4 June, 2015
If the venue staff are struggling to accomodate the wedding party thats on them for either having too little staff to cover the event or taking on too big of a party and the only time i would be mopping up anything or cleaning is if I was the one that spilled or made the mess,

Ya, that makes sense from your point of view (which is 100% correct btw) BUT you have to realise that as a mobile DJ (im assuming because im a club guy) a great deal of your business comes from word of mouth so you need to look at it from the viewpoint of the customer. Sure, youll get paid either way, but when they go home and their friend hits them up asking to refer a dj to them going the extra mile can be the difference between

"oh you need to hire dj weddingguy, he did my wedding and was amazing. The venue was a mess but he helped out and if it wasnt for him my wedding would have been ruined"

OR

"whatever you do do not hire dj weddingguy, the guy did absolutely nothing but sit there and play on his laptop. The venue was working their ass off and when we asked him to lend a hand he just laughed at us and started rubbing his contract on his crotch. DO NOT HIRE"

^Note the same DJ performance in both instances.

I once removed a fallen tree from a gig. There was a "hurricane" not quite but I am not sure if everyone will understand the word used here to describe it (nor'easter) Nobody could pass on the road and nobody could get home. They were quoted $800 to have someone come ASAP or could wait for the town the following day....................... NO BUENO!!

I had the tools (chainsaw, loppers, etc) in the truck because this cargo van is my all purpose van and I was dressed in shorts and had an extra T-Shirt....................... WHY THE F NOT??!!?? I ended up helping a HUGE amount of people which felt great, I was actually ding an annual three day gig at this house (three kids bday parties in a row) and not for nothing it took me all of 10-15 mins. (as I just moved the debris to the side of the road) and I got a huge tip out of it anyways as well as reinforcing the reason why this family chose me to do their annual 3 day bday week which did NOT come cheap by any means.

GREAT people and I would do it again at every gig (within reason) in a heartbeat. If mopping is above people here I am wondering if everyone would even have the ability to do this at all.

I get it. Let's NOT push it, Let's NOT advertise this, and furthermore let's focus on DJing but I have always tried to keep my policy as no good deed is beneath me. If there is a such thing as Karma I am confident it is in check for me LOL.

This is NOT the reason I did this but you would not believe how many gigs I got out of doing this ONE good act. I had parked my van RIGHT in the middle of 495 the Long Island Expressway (Long Island, NY's main highway) service road as nobody could pass anyways and when I finally got it all cleared people were literally asking for business cards plus saw the logo magnets on the side of the van as they were passing.

I understand mopping is not going to draw this kind of attention but I have to think somewhere along the lines it will help you out as not for nothing what Bezzle JUST said above me sounds like something that happens on the regular.

Hmmm, I guess sometimes we just don't think about the above and beyond. At my old residency at a small bar sometimes before security got there we had all female staff (manager. waitress, bartender) and I would have to fill the Bars Ice wells after I set up and got music going.

Not part of my job description but it eventually allowed me to grab complimentary beers at will instead of them keeping a strict count on my drink tab and waiting to be served.

Also on nights when I tagged teamed with a fellow DJ, I would make runs to the liquor store in the next block for OJ, Cran, or other mixers if we ran short or if the door needed small bills for change.
