Hello Folks,
Recently started djing with someone who uses vinyl and have noticed that I am getting a humming noise -similar to the sound when the turntables ground leads are not connected. i.e not the conrol tone...
This humming only occurs when using the Thru Outputs.
I have read though other folks problems and have checked the following:
• Ground leads are connected.
• Power supply is away from SL1 box and mixer leads are at 90 degree angles where possible.
• Disconnecting the AC from laptop made no difference. - Hum still there.
• Have disconnected Amp from mixer - still hearing Hum through headphones straight from mixer (cue and master monitor)
• Swapping channels has no effect and hum still stays.
• Swapping cables appears to have no effect and hum still stays.
• different cables has no effect and hum still stays.
There is NO hum when:
• Connecting just one thru output.
• No Hum when turntables are directly connected to the Mixer.
• No hum using line inputs for SSL
• Volume turned down
I have tried these combinations with two different setups (different turntables + different mixer + diferent speakers) but the problem is still there.
I am not sure whether this is a new occurrence or has happened all the time i have owned SSL - Up until recently i have just used SSL and no vinyl. Once I got it i switched straight using ~SSl with no vinyl.
Hope that makes sense.
Any help would be much appreciated
Thanks

Have you tried plugging the SL1 into a different USB port on this computer? Or maybe try it from a different computer.
If it still happens then, it would probably be a ground issue with the SL1. We could quickly get that fixed for you here at Rane if this is the case. Lets see if a different port or computer makes a difference first tho.

Hi Rafael
Thanks for the help, I have just tried the different usb port but still no luck the humming is still there.
Ok, how do i go about that? - I am based in the UK.
What is the turnaround likely to be as, typically, i have a couple of gigs coming up! :)
Thanks

Well, I didn't know you were located in the UK. To be covered under the warranty for products purchased in the UK you will need to contact
United Kingdom
Sennheiser UK Ltd.
3 Century Point
Halifax Road
High Wycombe
Buckinghamshire
United Kingdom HP12 3SL
Tel: 44 1494 551551
Fax: 44 1494 551550
Email
They will get you covered under warranty so I would contact them ASAP.

Hi marko.m, no sadly i didn't!
I haven't played with vinyl for a while so forgot about it and as my sl1 was out of warranty it cost me to send it back to Sennheiser, but they couldn't find any problem.
Thanks for reminding me i shall get back into investigating what the issue is.
I'll post back here if i hear anything...

I would try the SL1s that are having this issue on other computer to see if it just may be your computer causing the issue.

Have you tried unplugging your computer power cord to see if that is generating noise?

The only thing I can think of from here is that the ground cables on the deck are not working properly.

well then the hum noise would not appear one time on first SL channel , and next time on the other.

Yea - that would lead me to think it is the decks causing the issues.....
BUT - If you have tried different decks, a different computer and still have the same issue - its most likely the unit. If you have tried a friends unit on your set-up and the issue doesn't exist - I would also say it is your unit.
So if you can confirm this - then we can get you set-up for a repair.
