My problem is Ive been trying to record a live mix with my Mac book pro,SL3 and a vestax-vmc-004xlu mixer.
Ive tried switching the aux dip switch to LINE on my sorato box but when I do that the music file stops playing.
Also there are 3 switches on my SL3 and im not sure if I am supposed to switch all to LINE or only switch 1/2/3?
But Ive tried all combinations and no luck so far.
I have a phono cable running for sl3 inputs into the mixer's master 2 outputs.
I'm not exactly sure if that where the cable should be connected or if my mixer has recording capability.
any help would be much appreciated,
thanks in advance!

If you're using turntables, only 5-6 need to be moved to line input.
What do you meter lights in the recording panel look like? Are they maxing out?

Thanks for the quick reply,
I am using turn tables.
The thing is when I switch the 5-6 switch to Line the music stops every time.
Also the lights in the recording panel look fine,no red line.
Ive tried recording at extremely low levels but all that happens is a quieter distorted file is saved.

Hey Jay,
Can you get a non distorted recording if you switch the aux input (5/6) to phono, run a turntable directly into the input, and record a regular vinyl?

finally got a regular vinyl and tested a recording.
seems to record fine with a regular vinyl, there was no distortion.
still not able to get a undistorted recording using controller vinyl though.
Any ideas?

Try running a CD or some line level device directly into the aux input making sure to change the dipswitch to line this time.

Im case this problem can not be solved are there any other ways I can record my live mix?

Just trying to determine where the issue is coming from.
Mixer? Rane device? Computer?

@laz219 before you mentioned -->
"only dip switch 5&6 need to be moved to line input"
But when i move 5&6 dip switch's to line the music stops every time,
could that have something to do with the problem?

Are you sorted? What kind of Turntables are you using.
Input on the SL3 channels should be Phono
Output from your "Rec Out" on the Mixer should go into your Aux In on the SL3 (line level)

Thanks for the reply~
EQUIPMENT:
- Mixer Vestax VMC-0004xlu
- Left turn table Technics SL1200MK3D
-Right turn table Numark TT USB
SETUP:
- SL3 left output to mixer PGM 3 (Line 3)
- SL3 Right output To mixer PGM 4 (Line 4)
- Techniques turn table (left side) to SL3 left input
- Numark table (right side) to Sl3 right input
- Speakers to Mixer output master 1
- SL3 AUX to mixer output master 2
- Sl3 dip switch 1-2 Line/3-4 Phono/5-6 Phono
gave it another shot today after a few weeks,
for some unknown reason the distortion is gone, but the recorded file is still very small,
I turned up the master as much as I could without causing distortion and seems to be usable quality now.
I still noticed some interference with the recording coming out of the Chanel connected to the numark table though, might be because its a crappy table?
I would also like to know if its normal to have to max out the master on my mixer to get a loud enough recording,it seems strange to me.
any advice or opinions would be appreciated!

Try recording with the decks on INT mode. This would rule in/out an issue coming from your turntable.
Yes. This is normal. Once you make a recording you will need to boost the volume of the recording in a separate audio program to get it up to par with the volume of a store bought CD.
Check out this article I wrote that walks you through how to do this using Audacity --> dj.rane.com

Not sure about this.
His mixer has two independent master outs each with volume control
I don't think he has to Max out the volume of "Master 2" to get a decent recording.
1. Are you using the softwares auto gain? If so what settings do you have on it. Play a track inside serato and check that you are not clipping or too quiet inside the software. Stay Green.
Once that is sorted
2. Set the track gain on your mixer so you are just above green on the mixer and perhaps tapping into amber.
3. Put you line faders up to the Max. Make sure your xfader curve is set to the sharpest setting or just put it on the side playing.
4. Go to the record option inside serato and start increasing your Master 2 output till the Record Level (software) is green and barely taping into amber. I will advise you to stay green Max. Like Zach said..better to have a quiet recording which can be boosted with Audacity than a clipping/distorted one.

I would agree with all of the above steps.
You want to make sure the signal is running as hot as possible without clipping through each gain stage.
1. Out of the software.
2. Coming into the mixer.
3. Coming out of the mixer.
4. Coming into the record section.

Hey Whats up!
I am having issues with the quality of my recording regarldess if using Serato DJ, or Scratchlive and would really appreciate some help. I am able to record but playblack is distorted with a lot of base. This is my setup:
Dip switch from turntables to SL3 are set to phono (verified 100%)
Dip switch for AUX is set to Line (verified 100%)
RCA cable going from mixer recording to AUX(input) on the SL3
Sratchlive is set to AUX and gain levels are green just barely yellow no red on the mixer or software
Serato DJ is set to Channel 3 and gain levels are green just barely yellow no red on the mixer or software
There is a trim control on the back of my mixer that controls Master Output 1, and I have this turned down low. I have attached the PDF of the mixer incase you need it. www.reloop.com
Software
Serato DJ 1.7.3 and ScratchLive 2.5.0
Yosemite 10.10.2
Hardware
Rane SL3
Tables: Numark TT 500
Mixer: Reloop RMX-40 DSP BLACKFIRE EDITION
www.reloop.com
Computer: 13" MBPR 16GB
I am finding it hard to get better at mixing without being able to record a set, and have it critiqued. Any help I can get would be much appreciated.
Thanks

No my tables do not have line/phono switch. I used to have a vestax mixer with the SL1 using audacity to record, so the tables are fine. I have tried swapping out RCA cables and the USB cable from SL3 to my computer to rule out cables. I was wondering if there is a setting on my MBPR that may be causing this. If not it has to be a setting on the mixer...Thanks
