So she wanted to get me an iphone but instead decided on a projector. Can you guys tell me the one to go with in 500-800 range. Keep in mind I need a screen too. I am running a 2.4 Macbook pro. Thank in advance and can't wait to rock with video. One last thing is it a realistice price for something descent?

I would suggest spending more (~$1300) and getting a good short throw project from Toshiba (TDP-EW25U) or BenQ (MP771). You'll never have problems with limited space and you'll more than make up the extra cost when doing video.

Thanks MlE for the info. I think I could swing that. any preferred screen or they all the same. my bad for the same 3 posts. I am using the treo and had no idea it posted 3 times. trying to be productive at work!

Mozilla

I like what I read on the Toshiba but can it be a rear projector as well or only a front? If the BenQ is a rear projector can it be used as a front projector as well?

Rebelguy

BenQ does front and rear. Rear projection screens cost more but it's better then leaving your projector in the front by your audience.

mle

Yes, the Toshiba can do both front and rear. It is also 1280x800 versus the lower res on the BenQ. I have the Toshiba. I use the da-lite deluxe insta-theater screen. It's a front projection high gain screen that is extremely light and quick to setup/takedown. Not a big deal to use front projection since you only need about 4ft distance to the screen.

Thanks for the info. Just wondering what is the return like on the investment? I figured this set up is gonna run me around 2K for the set up described above. How much more can you demand at a club or wedding? I figured I could use it in the backyard, on trips , all type of different stuff so don't think the price is that bad. I am leaning towards the Toshiba because Bh Photo has a deal for 1299 with an extra bulb. Sounds like a good deal.

Yeah, that's a good deal. Bought mine for $1500 a few months ago with no extra bulb ($300).
It depends on your area... But, my typical bookings are around $2k so you can make it up with one gig.

Rebel, What type of screen do you use for rear projection. It seems like the d-lite 90" screen is $399. Is that the size you guys reccomend? I agree with Rebel, I would rather have the projector behind as well. I am sold on the toshiba just help me out on the screen. I am going about 1200 over my budget but it's okay cuz I just did my taxes.

I have i dalite rear projection screen with a heavyduty stand and it only cost me 600 bucks. I'd recommed rear projection. Looks real PRO.

Either projector should work fine. The deal from B & H on the Toshiba is pretty much to good to pass up. I think the only downsides on it are that the bulb life is around 2000-3000 hours. The BenQ is rated for 4000. The BenQ is also a higher Lumen projector (3000 rather than 2600) and also offers a DVI input. This is a plus for me as I run DVI out of my MBP straight to the projector. The Toshiba does not offer this.
As far as screens, I have two Da-Lite fast folds. One is 6' x 8' and the other is 8' x 10' They both ran $400 - $500 used off of ebay. If you are going to use the screens for corporate or wedding events i recommend purchasing the drape kit to run along the bottom. Looks way better than just running the straight screen.

this is the one i have. i think the screen size in the picture is 6'x8'.

i have the 54"x74" DualVision screen, deluxe frame, standard legs (which are pretty heayduty and shown in picture). the screen snaps onto the frame and connects to the legs easily. it has a varying height adjustment from 1.5' off the ground to 6' off the ground (i have a banner that hangs below the screen). the screen, frame, and legs fold up into the polycase (with wheels) with enough room for a speaker stand (which i use as a projector stand from behind). $549

Biggest consideration for me was not front or rear projection... It was how fast the screen is to setup and tear down. Nothing is faster or lighter than the insta theater screens. I like to pack up fast at the end of the night (which is always the worst part of the gig).

Thanks Itchie I like rear as well. I don't think that front projecters look right.

Mozilla
4:23 AM - 3 February, 2009
I almost was gonna pick up a front projector screen but since REBEL posted decided its probably looks way better with rear projection. I am not happy with the expense but was talking to a friend and he said the edge you get is way worth it with video. Man I had no idea that it was gonna be this expensive.

Itchie, worse like in the video's start adding up real quick? I am thinking of building up my video collection real big, then go and buy a projector. I probably would be like 50 music and 50%video right now. Tough decisions to make.

I am not really a far of the DJ screens as it is more to set up and bring. If you get any of the Fastfold screens they are up in about 10 minutes and everything fits in one case.

Funkytownstopsix
6:07 PM - 3 February, 2009
The only reason I am looking at the DJ screen is becasue I know I could set it up right behind me and raise it,,that way I will feel that everybody is looking at me I need that sometimes : ). . Mind you I am 6'4 but I know it can be done. I think with the fast fold I will have to have two I just feel like it... Not that I am cheap but I kinda am,,less than 4 hundred vs 6 hundred plus... That's just me but hell if I brought a Mac I might need to change my thinking all away around.

Check out newegg.com or tigerdirect.com for projectors and screens. I got an HP projector for free luckily from my girls dad, but compact, short throw, and a cheap bulb replacement are good things to keep in mind.
I wish i got a rear projection screen, but just too spendy. I got a 90 inch tripod one for like $90, it works fine but it would be easier to set up a rear projection for one off gigs.

Also no matter what you buy if they have a coupons code do a search on the net for the company I found one for big screens that save me 3% it was 16 dollars that I save not much but still 16 dollars...Anyway thanks for your input...

Just curious is there any reason to go with a projector with a super high resolution. Everything I'll be playing is 640x480 or 720x480 (think that's the norm for most people right now). I could spend the same money and get a projector with a lower resolution and higher brightness and contrast ratio. Thoughts?

Slide shows, custom made HD videos, game consoles, and etc. can take advantage of the better resolution. I don't only use it for VSL...

DJScreen is made out of Lycra, you can go buy it at the store for like $18. . . I made one to play with at the house.
Screen, I would go with www.thescreenworks.com like a 10ft or 14ft. make sure to get front and rear projection. The top 3 screen manufacture are all interchangeable as far as parts go.
