Same Song Twice!!!

DJ NoNseNse 12:43 PM - 11 January, 2009
Why do alot of DJ's play the same song twice at clubs?? I just cant do that.
Dj.Mojo 1:03 PM - 11 January, 2009
To brake a new song! A lot of people need to hear a song several times to realise its dopeness.
Or due to a lack of creativity.
DJ NoNseNse 1:28 PM - 11 January, 2009
I can understand a new song but most dj's where Im from dont break new songs. For example my girl went to the club and she said the dj played Single ladies by Beyonce twice.

Probably because that track works very well so he uses it twice.
To my mind that is still not o.k.
I use the bangers as peaks in my sets. I don“t play stuff twice.
Collegues of mine say it is o.k. since the crowd rotates and nobody will notice it.
Anyways it simply proves a lack of creativity.
sixxx 3:54 PM - 11 January, 2009
Many reasons....

Could be lack of creativity. Lack of music. (In this day and age, I dont know how on that one btw). Maybe it was requested again and they said, 'fuck it, why not?'. Maybe a tip (no organ) was involved. To help break a new song...

Just too many reasons....
Dj-M.Bezzle 4:40 PM - 11 January, 2009
I dont play tracks twice but I can see why some people can, in my area the people who show up at 10 are usually lining up to demand the same songs that the people who show at 1 want to hear and will bitch until they hear it, and the list of songs everyone in the club wants to hear is only about 5 tracks long. Im fairly positive in summer 08 i coulda put souljaboy, low, cyclone, and the cupid shuffle on a cd and put it on shuffle repeat and not had one complaint. I know its my job as the DJ to spoonfeed them what they should hear but ive seen plenty of djs that will play a banger at an early part of the set and in prime time. Ive asked them about it and the rule they use is they wont play the same track 2 times in under 2 to 3 hours
Rebelguy 5:14 PM - 11 January, 2009
I have a very simple response as to why I do it. I played the song, the owner shows up and wants to hear it again because he brought a girl with him. nuff said.

Tips (no organ) over $50 will get your song on within the next 5 minutes for me.

Recently when Splyce and I were playing at Element, some dude kept giving us hundreds to play Green Light. He ended up shelling out $1200 to hear green light 8 times.

Seriously?

I need to fly that guy out here and pay for his ticket...I'll still make more what the gig pays. LOL
Dj-M.Bezzle 6:47 PM - 11 January, 2009
One night this guy came in the booth while I was playing a full blown breakbeatset. He starts bitchin that he wants to hear some 'hood music' and requests lil wayne make it rain and lean back (ya really gangsta stuff there buddy) I explain to him that's not happenin and he pulls out 200 dollars gives it to me and leaves/..I proceed to blay the dj 303 make it rain breakbeat remix and the 3bb lean back breakbeat remix hahah all still breakbeat and still up in 140 bpm haha he was pissed
Caramac 11:47 PM - 11 January, 2009
Lol you could have played the tunes for that money.
djdalite 12:50 AM - 12 January, 2009
i play shit twice for two reasons - im getting money, or im seeing some tits
frost-9 1:45 AM - 12 January, 2009
yah... usually entails money, tit flashing, or inebriation.

I've done a couple 12 hour sets where I've repeated songs.. different mixes tho.
Caramac 10:50 AM - 12 January, 2009
If I'm personally feeling the song I'll play it twice. But then that is usually something brand new that I want the crowd to get used to hearing.

Although lately I've been flat out telling people I'm not repeating tunes when I'm having a good night. I tell them I got x amount of songs you want to hear your song you need to get here earlier.
Jay Sol 11:20 AM - 12 January, 2009
i rarely play the same song twice.

the only exception is if i'm spinning from 9pm-4am (which i do on saturdays). thats 7 hours and though i do have the music to do it, it tough to keep the crowds satisfied.i say crowds because the crowd we have at 11pm might not be the same bunch we have at 2am.

i will however play a different version of the song. for example, i played 3 songs twice last night. single ladies, pop champagne, and bring em out (everyone loves bring em out and its my most requested song).

i played the DJ Nova single ladies / be faithful blend, the pop champagne bitches blend, and the og version of bring em out the first time around.

the second time i played the og of single ladies and pop champagne and a blend of Memph Bleek - Like that with the Bring em out acc.

i gotta say though, 7 hours of spinning and only repeating 3 songs isn't bad. and TECHNICALLY i didn't repeat the same file twice. they were different versions.

sometimes its justified and some times its not gonna happen. if i'm doing a normal 4 hour set, you will NOT hear the same tune twice unless like mentioned above, money or tits are involved lol.
a-swift 5:16 PM - 12 January, 2009
confuscious say small crates to blame
DJ JAMES E 11:59 PM - 12 January, 2009
I did it twice at two parties that I can remember... The first was because it was a really hot song at the time and I played it earlier in the night. The hostess wanted it as the final song. Sure enough... Not 1 single person cared about me playing it twice. I can't remember what song it was, but it was definitely a #1 banger at the moment. The second time wasn't really my fault...

Me and my friend were DJing this party last month... I played "It takes Two" and then he took over about 20 minutes later. His first song was "It Takes Two."
ME: Dude I *just* played this song like 20 minutes ago!!
HIM: I was in the house drinking (He looks like he drank too much).
ME: --sigh--
HIM: Man, who cares this is a tight song!!

I went and started mingling with the crowd and this girl asks me... Didn't you just play this song??
djbigboy 12:11 AM - 13 January, 2009
I don't play CLASSICS 2x in a night...but like a current hot record...yeah, no problem. I dont do it normally but when there's a lot of requests, why not keep the ladies happy...

But don't ask me to play a recurrent, classic, rock song, etc more then 1nce.
DJ'Que 12:26 AM - 13 January, 2009
If i played it at 9pm n at 12am the new crowed wants to hear it cool but when moneys on the table it gets played as long as their paying me then i say go get me a drink n they comeback with 2 or 3.club makes money n i do that way no one trips
Audio1 2:20 AM - 13 January, 2009
Never play classics/recurrents twice. Most DJ's have enough music in their arsenal to not have to play music twice. I can see why "Single Ladies" would be popular twice. I think Ive done where I played it at 11pm then again at 1:30am before winding the night down, otherwise its really depending on the event or situation. I have been handed money before to play certain tracks but only play if they fit within the set. A few weeks ago, A girl offered $100 to play Trick Daddy - Drop (Low Low Low). She didnt think I had it and neither did I. I was $100 richer in that case.
Jay Sol 2:58 AM - 13 January, 2009
yeah i feel yall.

i only played Bring em out twice because everyone was bugging the shit out of me. there is a dance everyone is doing to it. like, damn, cant you do it to a different song?! damn.
DJ JAMES E 3:00 AM - 13 January, 2009
That's crazy that Bring em out is getting so much request at your club?? I know it's a hot track but that record dropped 4 years ago. Any reason why it's getting so much request?
Caramac 11:11 AM - 13 January, 2009
I think I need to hold off on some tunes or continue to play them one or the other. I liked Bring Em Out. Played it a few times had a mediocre response and hardly touched it again.

Or it might just be my area. There are quite a few T.I. tunes I thought would have been huge that have been blah with my crowd. I remember hearing What You Know About That about a zillion times on BET when I was out in Jamaica. I got home brought the tune and kept playing it and everyone kept looking at me like play something else.

The only T.I. tune that they loved straight away was Live Your Life.

and still no reasons for me to play the same song twice a nice... unless it's a remix, or I really really really like it or I want to promote it.

Oh wait. Now you got me.
Jay Sol 1:18 PM - 13 January, 2009
i guess there is a dance and everyone is just learning it now or something. i'm so out of the pop dance crap loop that i just play the song and let them do there thing.

but its dumb how that IS by far my most requested song of the night. followed by single ladies.
DJ Young Herrera 3:11 PM - 13 January, 2009
I never play songs twice. Not unless there's a benjamin involved.

On Saturday night this group of 30 year olds (mostly chicks) asked me to play single ladies, so I dropped it at midnight. no biggie right? 15 minutes later they start asking me to play it again...

I refuse, they send another person. Each person in the group came up once and asked me to play it again.

What the fuck! Go listen to the got damn radio. What? You need to be reminded that you're 30 and still fucking single!!!? I don't understand these lames. I really can't take this commercial top 40 bullshit much longer.
dj shadow from detroit 4:25 PM - 13 January, 2009
i get stuck playing the same song twice.not becuase im not creative or because i dont know what im doing! its because djing from 9pm-2am the ladies want to do the cupid shuffle.a couple times.to be honest i dont like playing the same song twice ever even if i dj 8hrs.but the truth is you have to make the women happy and sometimes you have to play request.

believe me i been djing a while and up until a couple years ago i never had so many request for the same songs.this whole club thing here in michigan is a joke.the reason the ladies want the same songs is because they hear it all the time and they learn to vibe with the song from dancing or acting a certain way.so they are comfortable when they dance to it because they practice dancing at home listening to the radio. lol!

i had this women come up to me saturday when i was playing 50 cent - i get it in.it was around 12 or so.she says what is this play something on the radio.i tell her did you come to this club to hear whats on the radio? she answered yes.i tell her this is 50 new track.it will be on the radio soon.and i also tell her im not a normal dj that plays the same songs all the time.i also tell her i play songs that come out before the radio plays it and i play songs i feel that are hits with out radio playing it.she looks at me and walks away.

20 minutes later same girl can you play cupid shuffle. i tell her sorry i already played it.can i play something else she says i came to the club to do the cupid shuffle.i tell her you came to the club to hear one song? she says yes.i tell her i will sing it to her after the club closes.she walks away smiling.by this time im ready to put the no request sign up because im being distracted from doing my job.

to end this funny story.im starting to realize that a average person thanks a dj is a juke box.this is because of the radio and because 7-10 djs play the same songs all night and when they get to the club they know what is going to be played.

to be honest im not a juke box i started djing because i like all music ( no country unless its a remix i like ) lol! IM NOT GONNA change the way i dj for anyone.once you stop enjoying what you do.thats when you need to stop doing it.its getting real close for me.this is because i need to expand where i dj.and go to new places.in 2009 im on a mission to dj at new venues and apply myself more.
Caramac 4:31 PM - 13 January, 2009
I had to laugh at one girl on saturday. I was playing one party as a guest dj and the Police came down to close the night down because some road man had rushed the doors. So I played 20 mins (paging sixxx for a you dj so bad joke) and the Police lock the dance off.

This one girl is like you didn't play my request. I'm like you don't see about 10 Policemen in the club telling you all to go home. The night is done darling. Come back next week. Lol.

+1

Its funny when girls do this.... The funnier ones are when dudes try to be hella intimidating and try to get in your face to play some hood rap or something, tryna act tough.... They gets no love, and 10 minutes later, they send their girlfriend to request the same song.... "Oh Im sorry sweetie, Your nice and all but you probably think TI means Tall Israeli"
Anonymo 4:56 PM - 13 January, 2009
I'm so used to my iTunes playlists I play every song twice, back to back.

WTF is the deal with women and this song.. it's like the 2008-09 version of protesting in the street and running around burning bra's to express some message of independence with no real direction outside of proclaiming to all the men in the room that they're probably just undesirable and therefore still single. If they're 30 and single they should be home counting their eggs. No one wants a 30 yr. old single chick who whore'd her way through her 20's Sex In The City style.

Quote:

don't you love when people do this.. like "lets present the image that EVERYONE wants to hear it." Usually when the 3rd person from a table comes over to request the same song (do they think they're clever?) I tell them that if they want to hear it again they should go somewhere else, and I'm not doing it under any circumstances.

Yup. I know.
R-Tistic 9:46 PM - 13 January, 2009
LOL...yeah, everything has been said.

Question...does anyone here use "sacrifice" tracks...meaning, you'll play a hot song, whether brand new or old, somewhat early, just to get everybody on the floor, if you don't have a crowd that's instantly ready to party? I do this sometimes...I'll be playin the warm up songs, and I can tell that they want to get out there, but they aren't drunk enough to make that brave move yet...so I'll drop somethin, usually nothin that's a top five track, but just somethin to get em there. Therefore, I may not have this song for later, but it did it's job.
Caramac 9:06 AM - 14 January, 2009
^^^ Yeah. More so at my residency than at a spot I'm guesting at. I tend to do it to mix things up. I occassionaly find myself playing the same style of music at the same time each week so I'll switch it up and sometimes play a sacrifice track to get things moving.

It's good it stops your crowd getting complacent and thinking they need to get their earlier so they don't miss their song.
Jay Sol 9:20 AM - 14 January, 2009
i got a good one.

what if you are guesting and the opener plays a ton of tunes you usually play in your set, including most of the hits. do you replay em or do you not play hits in that case?

depends on what time it is and if I think it'll make a difference. I'm not going to waste something if I think people will jump up and sit right back down. More often then not if they're boring, I'll drop a mix cd in and have a few beers until people pack in.

This used to happen quite a bit when I was younger. I just thought about who was djing before me when I used to pack my box and would bring a different set of records. It was funnier when I'd be playing with the same djs and the next time they'd be playing similar stuff to what I played last time.

I'll be honest I've not had that issue since I've had Serato. I either play full nights or the djs before me have played different things like funky house or garage so no real danger of them doing that.
Jay Sol 12:17 PM - 14 January, 2009
usually at my saturday spot, i have an opener / closer and i do the meat (11:30-2:30). i'm usually not around for his sets but i have stuck around and i hear HIM play the same tunes in his sets and sometimes, i'll play a song i heard him spin or he'll play a song i spun. its kinda hard when you are not around for the set. sometimes i gotta cover for my cousin from 9-11 or until he gets in cause he is a guitarist in a few bands or i can't get to the club till 11 because i myself am a guitarist / vocalist out here and we have shows till 10pm or something. oh well, i guess there really is no answer or template to follow as every situation is different.
DJ_PHAZE 3:35 PM - 14 January, 2009
1.DJs who don't listen to the music they have, limit themselves.
2. The promoters/owners sometimes dictate what they want played
3. The crowd is made up of folks programmed by the wack ass radio stations in the area

As far as openers... a good dj gets there early enough to hear the hour or so preceding so that you can smash joints he did not get to for the first 30 mins or so.
djtonypsalms 2:53 AM - 15 January, 2009
In Reggae, playing a song twice (3X sometimes) means the song IS A HIT!!!

Song plays >>> Crowd goes bezerk >>> MC bawls out "Wheel, and come again, ... from top!!!" >>> Sampled Airhorn or laser shots >>> Song plays from the beginning.

It's sincere form of flattery.
