Loop and Roll from DDJ SX

DJ D!N 8:30 PM - 20 November, 2013
Hi there.
Im quite new to this Forum, so I don't know if this was asked before.
It happens far to often to me, that i accidentally hit the autoloop-button when it's still set to 1/16 or 1/8 Beats, because of the Roll-effect I used before.
I mean it's obviously a lot easier to program it that way. But it's also much more dangerous…
I usually use the Roll-buttons for short loops to have something like a "stutter-effect" and i also use it for build-ups or breaks during a transition. So that means those loops have a maximum length of maybe a half beat.
On the other Hand i use the auto loop function to have a constant beat in the background or a base or a snare or whatever, which mostly requires a loop of 4-16 beats.
I would never let the autoloop-button stay on 1/16 Beat because i would never use it that way.
Now with a mixture of "having this in my mind" and "a bit stress, because i got to keep the crowd dancin'" and to do so i have to concentrate on other things than to push the "x2" Buttons for 10000 times to reset my auto loop-function to a normal and sensible level of beats, I f***** up my sets for a few times pretty well…

To give u a specified example: I makin' a build up with 1/8, and then 1/16 Beats & and directly after the drop I want to set a loop of the following beat to mix some other stuff into it…
Well but sadly my autoloop-function is set to 1/16 Beats and my genius plan of mixing 2 or 3 songs together ends up in something that sounds like prtftrpfffftkrschhh…

To come to the point: Please give the Rollfunction a separate loop-"(howeveritscalled maybe loop-section)" so that i and maybe other users who quietly complain about this don't have to be annoyed about this anymore…

I agree with this wholeheartedly. One possible solution until they roll out a fix (if ever) is to just hit the largest roll there is (I think it's 8 beats?) when you're done with the roll function and that way you aren't caught off guard later on. Just tap it quickly and it'll set the loop length without actually going through the entire loop. It might take some time to get used to, but it might help in the long run.

Or, midi map an lpd 8 or something to activate loops of your choice. I use my launchpad for this, a quadrant for each deck. I mapped out the loops that I use auto loop for and this way I am never stuck hitting auto loop numerous times to reach 16 or 32, I just press the button that corresponds to the loop length I want and press it again to turn it off. I was frustrated like you because I wanted the same results. I just found a nice work around!

Well this would be the same as simply pushing one of the last roll buttons to reset it to 4 or 8 beats as Crazyraider described it.
But in my opinion this shouldn't be necessary. I mean, yeah it is possible but neither I feel like punching into my brain that I always have to push the last roll button to do this, nor am I willing to pay for more equipment which should basically not be needed.
For me the only logic way of doing this is to simply implement a third loop section for the roll effects…
I can't see any disadvantage at all in this, only improvements, cause it would also solve the problem of jumping out of loops if u r pressing the roll buttons.
Besides it's not like they would have to reinvent the wheel. "Serato": I guess this loop section would have near by the same source code as the others(the only differences r the buttons which r needed to be pressed).
Should be one of the cheapest and easiest improvements ever, there r even no Graphics needed for this . just give any of ur programmers a bunch of bucks, so he can fix it.

PLEAAAASE :)

By the way I just found a post of Nuno which also belongs to loop roll and which makes also so much sense:

Quote:
Hi,
When performing a loop roll, or doing stuff in slip mode, which are similar things, in this case, the wave display "freeezes" (normal behaviour) while i am pressing on the pad, showing clearly the area at about which the loop roll is taking place.
To me this has little use, as i know perfectly where the loop roll is taking place.
What i wanted was : while i am pressing down the pad, and hence performing the loop roll, i wanted the wave dispaly not to "freeze, but rather to keep on going (scrolling), so that i would know exactly when i should release the pad to engage back the music at the right timing.
Since the display is "frozen" i am blind to see the rest of the wave... I can only guess :(
Is it possible to have the wave display still scrolling while loop rolling or sliping? This would be a lot more logical and should be the standard behaviour.....otherwise there is no point in this tool really.
Thanks

I really really really love the DDJ SX and also Serato is a very nice Software but I would love to see u doing some improvements on the Roll effect, 'cause it's such a nice effect, but not really thought to the end in ur software :/

I absolutely agree that workarounds like what Unit:E and I described shouldn't be necessary. But search "large library" in the support and general discussion boards and you'll see that SDJ is already strapped for spare RAM. Long story short, SDJ is a 32-bit application, which means it only gets 2GB of RAM to use. As I understand it (and as simply as I can say it), large libraries need more memory than SDJ can take, and it crashes. Until the library system is improved or Serato gets a 64-bit version (which gives programs access to, at least in this day and age, more memory than they could possibly need (and probably have access to, save for supercomputers)) of DJ out the door, I doubt we'll see separate loops for the loop roll because giving each deck another loop slot, even if not on the GUI, would take up RAM that SDJ just can't spare.
Crazyraider 1:07 AM - 22 November, 2013
At least, I would assume that to be the case. I don't know enough about SDJ's code to be 100% certain.

What I describe is not like crazyraider. No need to push a roll button then autoloop. When I push a loop button, it loops for that length, and stays until I deactivate it. What crazyraider suggets is that you have to lengthen the roll to set the auto loop length to 8 or whatever, then press autoloop. I can roll to my hearts content, then hit 1 button and I am looping 32 beats. I agree that you shouldn't have to do this and I only suggested it as a workaround for now until they possibly implement this into the program...which I agree should be in there. If you don't have any other controllers laying around, map it to a key on your keyboard, if it's possible.

A big +1 on this one. While I understand how this is happening in regards to the software I also feel this feature was implemented in a way that does not provide flexibility but rather just gets the job done. Where it really gets in the way is when your being creative. There is just no real way to smoothly do stutter builds using 1/16 and 1/8 note rolls and then drop straight into an 8 or 16 beat loop with just the DDJ-SX. There just isn't enough time to hit the 2x button that many times and stay in time. Activating the Auto loop that corresponds to the upcoming loop you want just so you don't have to hit 2x also doesn't make much sense as far a smooth work flow is concerned. Seems like something your always fighting or are using a "workaround" to accomplish.

Hello friends: does anyone have any idea how to fix this issue on the DDJ-SX using Serato DJ. The roll function stopped working properly on all channels, it doesn`t respond any more. The 4 bottom pads are permanently lit but they only rewind or fast forward the track in play (crazy). I`m running the latest update on Serato both software/driver/firmware. My Laptop has lots of juice Win 10 64bit, 8G, 260Ghz, i5 3rd gen quad core. I uninstalled and reinstalled all software and drivers, but no luck. Let me know if anyone can help. I`ve been using this controller for 3 years and never had any issues until a few days ago. The only thing I`ve done different to my computer in the past few days is upgrade to some FX expansion packs. Thank you.

Sounds like your beat jump controls are on. Disable them in the settings, that way you'll have all 8 pads control ROLL again.
Party Drop Zone 3:30 PM - 19 August, 2016
The disable box for beat jump control got stuck on checked on the settings, wouldn`t unchek.
I I uninstalled and reinstalled everything again and that did it. Thank you DJ Cyrix.

You're welcome. I have no clue why the check button got stuck on your end though.
