Funny, I have a sweet 16 party for a friend's daughter. I'll bet some of those prom tracks would go well. I don't usually DJ for young'ins so I have no idea what teeny boppers listen too but I'm pretty sure it ain't "Before I Let Go". Normally I wouldn't deal with such nonsense as a sweet 16 but it's for a friend and I'd hate to have her let some guy come in and screw it all up.

yo. a couple years ago i had a cousin who was class president of his high school, so i ended up playing two years worth of dances for his school. as a club DJ, it was really hard to remember to play the clean versions and before the last one i agreed to do the principal lectured me about playing J-Kwon "tipsy."

make sure you get LOTS of cake. schools set aside a lot of money for big bashes like that, so you should be getting g's out of them.

first off, you can probably dismiss half your 'normal' playlist: must use radio edits only. checkout the playlists from the local radio stations, top 10 rap + top 10 rap will kill an easy hour.

what do you consider old school? to me that means some old biggie, tribe called quest, onyx, etc. these are kids, some of which weren't born until 1990, so old school to them might be ja rule, dmx, etc.

find a couple slow songs, probably no more than 5 (depending on length of dance) to sprinkle through the night. these work well as tempo changers... go from mid-90's bpm set --> slow dance song (65bpm?) --> 110bpm club banger set.

like the evil one pointed out, get your $. prom cost probably $25/couple or more. 100+ couples = $2500. is the dance in the school gym? do the decorations consist of streamers and crate paper? then they should have about $2490 left in their budget. that doesn't mean that you earned that much $, but you get the idea. now if they booked some outside location things would be different, but take all things into consideration.

Hey, me too cutrix (L.A. area). My Lil Sis goes there though. I hope I don't ruin it for her. I do know that a lot of these youngsters are all into like Indie Rock and 80's Flashbacks and stuff and of course Hip Hop will always be in the mix so this is what I would plan on working with---Good Luck

to answer blisk its in suburbs. but its a continuation school. but ive djed it the last 2 years and this year they asked me to play less "rapper grinding music" and more slow and parent friendly music. basically all the shaperones (sp?) got all pissy cause i was playing dirty music.

I've recently done several youth gigs. I'll hit you with a playlist when I get to my gig lappy. The hottest thing for them now is the Thizzle Dance by Mac Dre and yes, they will want the Cha Cha Slide. Yeah, some flashbacks (Can't Touch This-MC.Hammer, Baby Got Back-Sir Mix-a-Lot, Play That Funky Music, Wild Cherry). A few Rock songs a few pop But mostly clean/radio versions of R&B and Hip Hop.
