yes you can warm up at any bpm...geez DJs and there bpm's.

BPM does not classify the mood of a song. If you warm up only consisit of certain tempos than your just limiting yourself. You can warm up at any bpm I do it all the time.

I know there are songs in the 120 BPMs which are mellow, but this song has a lot of energy, what do you play before and after this song? Do you have so many mellow songs in that range, R&B songs? I call this Pop/Dance with a Soul/Neo Soul touch.
DJBotz 5:59 PM - 16 September, 2013

Pop dance...really that song has nothing but soul there is nothing pop about it. r&B can be uptempo and slow its all about the mood of the song. That song is not a banger nor a prime time song its officially a wam up song.

Everyone else may disagree but Madcon does not make pop (commerical) dance music.

Alicai Keys - This Bed (127bpm)
NeYo - Closer
NeYo - All because of You
Usher - You dont have to call
DJ Remy USA 6:24 PM - 16 September, 2013
DJs dont be afraid to pump energy into your dancefloor early with uptempo songs that are not prime time or bangers. It really just depends on how you like to build your floors I like my night energetic and fun you may like your nights a bit different play what works for you.
DJ Mozo 7:45 PM - 16 September, 2013
Yall trippin man.. i put most of these tracks on during primetime :) As much as people love the new school ratchet twerk stuff, you can't go wrong with the old school. I'm just saying :)
Montell Jordan, TonyToniTone, etc. People love that stuff during prime time mayn!

Check Madcon - Glow - pure Pop/Dance ish, without the Soul

Ne-Yo - Because of you - that's fine and it's 110 BPM
Usher - U don't have to call - fine as well and it's 100 BPM
I wanted to know, what are you playing before and after warming up with Madcon - Beggin' ? Same style would be Duffy - Mercy
I'm with you, as a warm up you play songs that aren't a hit yet or that were hits before, but not needed to be played at the prime time. I was just thrown off a bit with your Madcon - Beggin - suggestion as an R&B warm up song, when most of the R&B is 90-105 BPM and this song isn't a pure R&B song eighter. But anyway, every crowd, every dj is different.
If that works for you, that's all what counts.
DJ Remy USA 10:22 PM - 16 September, 2013
Well considering I'm not playing R&B all night. The Alicia Keys track I mentioned.

I have to look at my library to pull more but I know I have at least 20 - 30 tracks in that range that work. Mostly funky R&B old school type jams some more boarderline pop stuff as you call it.

I'm pretty sure every R&B artist has songs that are considered pop doesn't mean that's there main style.
DJ Remy USA 10:29 PM - 16 September, 2013
The Roots - The Seed 2.0 (BBC remix)
Fertile Ground - natural Reggae (not RnB but so much soul)
Gnarles Barkley - Crazy

When I was stationed in Japan, I would play Rapture - Blondie, Encore - Cheryl Lynn and I Got Lovin - The Fatback Band. Of course now, it's early in the night but I would then move on to Too Close - Next, any Mary J. Blige dance cut, Shake it Up - Horace Brown, Things We Do For Love - Horace Brown, Back and Forth - Aaliyah, Spending Money - R. Kelly......It really depended on the crowd at that point.
Jensen Määäm 1:56 AM - 17 September, 2013
Yep, the 90's were the golden era, when R&B artists like Usher & Co started making Pop/Dance music there wasn't much good R&B music released after 2006/2007...same with Hip Hop...latley it's getting better.
Many artists were mentioned in the thread already, I just added some songs...

Question...

How many of you all have got complaints from folks, usually 30-40 year old women 80% of the time, that you're playing "too much old stuff" and "need to play some newer music" when you're playing 90's and early 2000's R&B in that 9PM-11PM time frame?

I've heard this complaint more than any other complaint. I haven't heard it since NYE, but heard it a lot back in 08-09 when I was really on that throwback tip. I don't think people understand that the vibe at this time is supposed to be more chill...yet, there's barely any new-new songs that fit that vibe! Even if I only go back for the last 4-5 years, it would be the same exact 20 songs getting played for every early vibe set....Slim so fly, Miguel How many drinks, Suit and tie, Aodrn, maybe Beyonce Love on top, Say ah, Chris Brown Strip..a few more.

On the flip side, I had a complaint once when I went the opposite way, playing a lot of new R&B tracks that were cool on an early vibe tip, but weren't all that known.

It might have something to do with a lot of (newer?) DJ's that don't understand the concept either. I hear (and hear of) a lot of that. Doors open/straight into full-on EDM. I get it for a late-night/after-hours, but not so much for a place where liquor sales account for a lot of expected revenue...

So I can sort of understand why some random chick on her first visit to where I'm at (who maybe just got done "powdering her nose" in the bathroom before coming up to the DJ booth) might think it's perfectly okay to request Avicii or Ke$ha at 10:15pm when I'm most likely playing Aaliyah/TLC/ATCQ/etc.

Actually I just got compliments last Saturday because I did a power mix set of '90s R&B and Hip-Hop.

Grown and sexy crowds

Great song and Soul & Funk goes with R&B, but the thread reads R&B warm up tracks.
You keep pulling out tracks that are not R&B. No disrespect, but I think, stay more to the topic.

Actually - there is a line dance or hustle that goes with that song and USUALLY ONLY a 35 and up crowd would know how to do it...

Watchwww.youtube.com

So yes it does qualify as a Warm up for R&B/Grown and Sexy crowd....

Anybody that has requested that with me has probably been over 45 (closer to 60 - lol) and playing it at peak hour would kill the room for 80% of the crowd - do it early and get it out the way...

I think the dilemma we have here is, we are located in different places all over the planet, we have different crowds, different markets, different tastes, different styles, different djs, different motto's,...
but the original question was not, what goes with what, or can you play this for this or that crowd, the question was: R&B warm up tracks.
If someone asks me for R&B warm up track, then I name R&B warm up tracks.

I've for sure received more compliments on this as a whole, so it might not even matter. But it still tends to be something I hear, and that I've seen other DJ's mention as well. It's usually 30+ people that do it, which is the shocking part to me.

The younger the crowd, the more new stuff I would have to play, but that's tough, there aren't that many songs that fit in that style/vibe, like you said.

I do notice that the YOUNG-young 21-23 crowds tend to know a lot of random new songs that I tend to have, and can only play for them. After like age 25, people really just know the radio songs the most

It probably happens to everyone in open format venues... I right with ya on the fact there arent many newer songs that fit into that nice chill vibe you want to have the first couple hours. Sure every few months something comes out that everyone is requesting... but within a month or 2 its overplayed and on the shelf... they dont stand the test of time like the throwbacks you speak of. I had a woman come up to me and say.. Hi.. Im from NYC.. can you step it up a little.....I just looked at her...looked over her shoulder at the packed dance floor... looked back at her and just smirked and shook my head... as if what I was playing wasnt working.

Open format venues.. sometimes you just cant win... there will always be a few people who want newer stuff.. and some that want older stuff, but to me the proof is in the pudding.. if the dance floor is packed and you have 85-90% of the people in the place dancing, just stay on the path youre on and dont let people shake you out of the groove.

Yea that's all it's about. The only bad one I had recently was NYE...a dude (who I let put his jacket on my subwoofer) and his girl were there, and he was complaining at literally 10:30, saying "is it 90's night? You only gonna play 90's? Cause me and my girl want to leave if that's the case." While it's ALL girls there, and they're all singing along hard. Made no sense that he'd even care...but yeah. Yes, I actually had it recently, not the first time and almost always that scenario.

But it works both ways.

What makes me laugh about this is even on these boards with DJs who should know better, is that when a thread comes up about 30+ crowds everyone starts throwing around the same old tired clunkers like you're a dinosaur once you've hit 30 and couldn't possibly get down with new stuff. 30 years old means you were born in 1983, not '63.

(It's like when a Rock thread comes up and DJs list a cliche top 10, all completely different sub-genres and spanning 5 decades... like all Rock crowds are going to get down to that whether they're 21 or 51)

But on the flip side I do think it's funny when a woman of 30-40 age walks into a theme night, or is there at 10pm and 4 songs in starts asking when we're going to play newer stuff. Like she's going out of her way to let you know she's "with it" but it's usually some bullshit radio joints they're asking for that they already hear 10 times a day.

If this was a complaint I've heard every other week, then maybe I'd need to check my own self, but it is one that I've heard a few times and always thought was funny.
DJ VEE 11:40 PM - 17 September, 2013
If that guy wanted to leave at 10:30 on New Year's Eve ... Oh well. Wonder how that would work out for him? I probably would not give it a second thought . If everyone is on the dance floor and having a great time, too bad for him. Lets change the whole party and have everyone else sit down so he can hear what he wants.

Every generation has it's hits and favs, older people like music, that younger people may not like and vice versa. Of course, older people still like new stuff as well. But who said, if it's not a 90s R&B motto party, he or her will play that kind of music all night long? Beside that around 2006 almost no R&B was released anymore, every damn artist who has released R&B music before started making Pop/Dance music only, so how much R&B do you have from those years? I think Rnb consist of all decades where artist contributed to the genre. With that being said RnB gets almost no prime time slot play anywhere Ive played at since being a DJ granted Ive only been one for 7 years so Im limited.

Im totally open format and I feel its my duty to pass along all RnB hits and great songs from all genres. Normally my sets consist of music for all ages so I may play Rihanna, Heavy D, and The Temptations all in the set but it will flow. I know anyone under 30 may not know about the temptations thats my parents music but still I play it even if its for one verse/chorus then mix out.

DJs continue to educate the audience play some new music and play some old music play all the music.

Again, this part of your post, I was responding to.
Maybe I shouldn't have put on this shoe, but we've pulled out a lot of 90s R&B tracks as examples, before you've came in here. Then R-Tistic was talking about people complaining to him he would play too much old music.

So again, you responded to something you didn't understand.

You're confused. Read it again.

but his thread was about R&B warm up tracks.

Why is this not getting through to you?

As I was reading R-Tistic brought up a situation, I recognized and said I've been there too. I then talked about the flip side that unfortunately, some DJs actually are under the impression that 30+ crowds will only listen to old music.

Do I have to repeat any of this, only slower?
Jensen Määäm 11:24 AM - 18 September, 2013
I would say there was just a bit of misunderstanding.
I'm with you, older crowds are not just into older music, they like newer stuff as well. May djs tend to play more older music, when the average age of the crowd is older, but you did'nt get what I've tried to say. When it comes to R&B music, there is much more older stuff then newer stuff and the chances that an older crowd is more into that older music are higher than the chances with a younger crowd and older music.
