Hey Konix I use the serato program to record my live mixes. I use a rca cable with the earphone plug at the end. The rca part goes into the ttm56 mixer master output then the earphone pluggin part to the interface mic input. Then I use rca cable form mixer aux output to amp input to hear what im mixing.
In the serato software change record option to mic. just make sure your mic gain is a zero on the interface. The mixes never sound like ish either. I just do a lil editing with another program like normalizing, hiss reduce, convert to mp3 etc..

Yes, just rename your ScratchLIVE folder in your Music folder on the internal drive to something like "ScratchLIVE_old" and this wil prevent SSL from loading all your crates from the internal drive's songs. Start SSL with your external plugged in and if you did everything correctly it will only load the crates with the songs from the external drive. Try loading a few songs up, if they load, you're good.

Since everyone wants to try 1.9 but doesn't want to get rid of 1.8, a lot of people have been asking about running multiple versions of SSL on their computer. I wanted to make a video to show someone, but I figured I'd ask the Serato Tutor first. The instructions are posted by the Serato team in the beta, but I don't think everyone understands.
Personally, on Windows I modify my desktop shortcut to point to the C:\Program Files\Serato\ScratchLIVE folder and rename the .exe files in there. On Mac, I just put the .app files on my desktop with the version numbers.

Hey Konix,
might be a good idea to make a video on how to utilize the new set/play list export?
Ie:
how to export them (txt,csv,m3u), how to use them in a spread sheet, how to import a m3u playlist to a media player (iTunes, Media Monkey etc) for syncing your set list to an mp3 player.
I guess you've covered some of it already.
Its fairly obvious, but some might have missed this great new feature.

Hey Konix or anyone else for that matter.
I followed your tutorial on how to backup all tracks, crates, etc on an external but it doesn't exactly work for me. I think the reason is because of the way make my crates:
I use itunes to import all of my music. I make a playlist in itunes (which then shows up in SL). I then open up SL and make a SL crate. After that I highlight and drag all songs from the itunes playlist into the SL crate. Once all my songs are in there I can then make subcrates, etc...I then go into itunes and delte the original playlist that I created. So in the end I have a bunch of SL crates, no itunes playlists even though everything is reading through itunes.
Now when I plug in my external to another computer/or same computer, all of my crates and everything show up, but all my music has the pink question mark showing there are no files found. Any thoughts?

corrupt database. rename it to something else.then reload serato and let it read all your tags.and all your files will show up correct.
depending how many files you have it might take a little while.
hope this helps.

The pink question mark means that specific file can't be found. If it can't find the song, first figure out where you are looking (use the location field). Then figure out where your file is. There's more to it, but once you understand the foundation of how it works and what the error messages mean, you can work your way to a solution. Just relate it to real world stuff... like records. Basically, you have a bunch of empty record sleeves and no vinyl. Find your vinyl.

Right click the file (in iTunes), select "Get Info," go to the artwork tab, and if you see multiple pics, click and highlight and delete the ones you don't want. Then the correct one should show in SSL.

You could try going into your _scratchlive folder and renaming the "database" file into "database_old" and let serato load up every track again.

To run 2 (or more) versions of SSL, rename the current one on your computer (add 1.8.3 or something) then when downloading the new one it will not replace the current one.
if you want more than 2, just keep changing the names.

go into SSL settings, make sure read iTunes libary is not checked. if not all of your songs appear, open the folder where your songs are located, and drag them to your all folder. this should not cause duplicates (as far as i'm aware, or have experienced)

When i open up the music folder on my mac i only see an itunes folder and a scratchlive folder. It appears that all of my songs are in itunes. so my question is how do i move the songs over to an external to mimick my created ssl crates when all of the songs are stored in itunes. I'm starting to get very nervous that i could lose all of my music if something goes wrong with my internal hd or the laptop itself. I woke up in the middle of the night sweating and hyperventilating from a bad nightmare that i lost all of my music. I sincerely appreciate any help on this matter.

Yes you still need to calibrate with CDJs, but instead of putting the needle on the record you just pause the CD.
Konix
7:07 PM - 4 August, 2009
However I will say calibration is probably not as important (but still important enough) with CDJs as it is with turntables, due to the nature of CD players being all digital and turntables being analog. You don't have to worry about needles/vibrations/ground wires, etc.

If all your crates are already on the external drive, then you don't have to do anything...maybe. If the drive is formatted Windows NTFS, then you won't be able to save/change/edit/delete/modify anything on the ext drive when connected to the Mac, as Macs cannot write* to NTFS drives, only read. If the ext drive is FAT32, then it's ready to go on the Mac and you don't have to do anything.
*It's possible for Macs to write to NTFS drives via third party programs/drives like MacFUSE and NTFS-3G, but I really don't recommend these.

How come when i try to do this it goes all the way to the right?? I end up playing with it all the way to the right and nothing bad happens, but that would be cool if i could make it go to the middle..

Konix, I have a new mac and watched your video on moving songs to an external, works great btw. On the Internal HD, everytime I save the ScratchLIVE folder to ScratchLIVE_old, the mac will create a new ScratchLIVE folder? Does this make sense? It does the same thing if I delete it, makes a new one? On my external drive, my folder is named _ScratchLIVE_ just as you described in your video. Got any suggestions? I dont have the latest Leopard OS just FYI. Thanks.

So I just upgraded my mac to SNOW LEOPARD Everything seemed to be working the same until i added new music to my HD and then I hit my scratch tools command short cut to sync my HD folders with my serato crates and all the sudden I have duplicate songs (not crates ) but songs in my entire library.... what happened ?

That's an issue with Snow Leopard a lot of people are having, triplicate files.
Konix
6:22 PM - 4 October, 2009
That is normal. There always has to be a ScratchLIVE folder in your Music folder. This is the "main" one SSL uses to store most of it's stuff, like the history, crash log, overview builder log, MIDI settings, recorded sets, Whitelabel files, etc. These aren't stored in the external drive _ScratchLIVE_ folders. So if you delete the ScratchLIVE folder in the Music folder, SSL will just make a new one on next load.
The purpose of renaming/deleting it is just to prevent SSL from loading the crates/subcrates from the Internal drive.

I tried to calibrate with my CDJ 800's today and I did exactly what the video said except when Konix put the needle on the record I pushed pause on my CDJ...
Step 1: Play a track in internal mode at volume which will be used (club volume)
Step 2: Click setup put my CDJ's on pause
Step 3: Click the estimate button
Now when I click or hold the estimate button while the CDJ is paused the bar moves all the way to the left -72db.. If I click the or hold the estimate button down while the CDJ is playing.. it movies the bar all the way to the right -24db
when the CDJ is paused the top right corner doesnt bounce around and stays at 0.0 and the bottom right corner says 0%..
when the CDJ is playing it shows the pitch % at which the CDJ is at and it shows 100%.
but i dont understand why it goes to -24db when playing or -72db when paused?
shouldn't it be in the middle as per Konix's video?

With CDJs it's a little different. Calibrating isn't as important (but still important enough) with CDJs as it is with turntables, since CDJs are digital and don't have a lot the "analogue" problems associated with turntables that cause a lot of the noise issues (ground wires, needles, vibration, etc.). If you're getting -72dB with CDJs, then great. As long as you don't get any "ghost" movements on the virtual decks and/or digital grumbling when the player is stopped, then you're good.

hey Konix.. i get ghost movements when my setting is at -72db which is what it calibrates at when my cdjs are paused and the volume is turned up on internal mode.. i tried doing it manually and possibly putting it in the middle around 47db.. but the only time i dont get ghost movements is when its -24db..
just so we're talking about the same thing.. ghost movement refers to the waveform moving slightly even when the cdj is paused?
i have SL3
thx

Got any tips on the best way of mapping an Akai LPD8 to serato 2.0?
I have my LPD8 mapped through the Scratchlive midi tab (pre 2.0, but same as you would assign any midi function in Scratchlive) but this does not allow "scene" changes through the controller itself. I have been doing that by using saved midi modes inside the scratchlive setup area (setup, midi, create mode then save). Only problem is then when you want to change midi modes you need to touch your laptop.
I will be having a go on 2.0 beta tonight so i will know more soon.

@ Konix -
Just played around with the Live Playlist thing as show in Part 3, seemed to work just like in the video, information was sent BUT I can't see where it went, I guess it is supposed to be attached to my Profile, but I don't see a option to enable it.
Is the website not enabled yet to post and view the Live Playlist thing yet. Didn't really do a detailed search but saw a hint saying that in the 2.0 Public Beta section.
Seems like a cool idea, if somebody could make a Twitter or Facebook Plug-in that would grab and re-post that info, it would be a great "live from the club" promotion tool. It would crush the hoopla over the Twitter - Native Instruments Richie Hawtin thing from a while back.

konix, quick question, I remember you having just a white macbook. Now i see you have a unibody Macbook pro. When you did the switch did you use the mac migration method to transfer all your data and settings over or did you use some cloning software. I'm about to buy a new computer and will like to know the best way to do so.

great tips Konix, nice one :)
its really a shame you cant drag and drop straight from the browser to add artwork - i feel like its a cumbersome way of adding it in the current state
also, do the images embed in to the file, or do they need to be saved to a folder if you transport the library around?

peace of advice for people, if you pull art work from discog click on the record and then drag that picture, not the one that first comes up, actually clicking on the record and dragging and dropping that one give's you a clearer album cover.

That's intentional. The video is about the X1, not the effects. If I had the music louder, than you wouldn't be able to hear me, or I'd have to practically yell. Plus, it's not a direct feed of the audio, I basically just turned my headphones up and recorded it along with my voice through my built in mic.
When I do my FX videos, I will use direct audio feeds and will make sure it's nice and clear for y'all.

Konix, First of thank you for all the vids, they have helped me tremendously.
I am trying to use ScratchTools to export all my videos to a text file. The problem is is that my music is on an internal drive and my videos are on an external drive. The folder that contains the crate I wanna export is on the external drive BUT it is located in a folder titles _scratchLIVE/Crates
Can you help me solve this problem. I tried dragging the crate from the external into the scratchLIVE folder on the internal, but it did not work.
Any suggestions?

I have A noob question that i am sure I saw somewhere in your videos Can you post the link for the video on you to make a universal column for all crates. For examople. If i click on all music and I set up my columns with song, artist, bpm album etc and I click on another crate these settings are different and I have to set up the columns for each crate. Im sure there is a right click or command click to fix this and keep all crates under a universal order system
thanks

How about sheding some light about the "advanced" file functions in 2.0 ?
I've tried it with some ALAC files, and found that my genre tags were erased/reverted to older version after moving. This while moving files between different locations on internal drive.

I just got me an Traktor Kontrol x1, then I watched your videos and still had a hard time to map that thing, like I want it....but I made it.
Anyway, I've got one more question: how do I assign pitch bend to a button? Because all I know is the letter on the keyboard that does the job, but I don't see any button on the screen like other functions I assign to knobs and buttons on my controller.

You have to switch to Internal mode to see the pitch bend buttons, they are the + and - buttons under the pitch slider (they used to be the << and >> buttons prior to 1.9). Map them in Internal mode, then you can use them in Relative mode.

Konix,
Thanks for the great videos. I have a few questions on Scratch Live. Please correct me if I'm wrong. I'm trying to MIDI Map the DN-S3700 and I've ran into problems.
Is it true that you cannot...
* Cannot Clear a Cue Point in MIDI (I don't know what the guys in New Zealand were thinking)
* Cannot assign 1 button to divide or multiply a loop (It has to be a knob)
* Cannot MIDI assign any button to expand/extract the Crates (This is essential for file browsing)
* Cannot MIDI assign any button to Instant Double the 3rd and 4th deck (You can only do this with a mouse)
* Cannot MIDI assign any button to Instant Double to or from the Sampler (Again, by mouse only)

I'm pretty sure all of those are true except for expanding/collapsing crates, that's what the "Left" and "Right" buttons do in the library MIDI assign area (in addition to scrolling left/right in the tracklist area). "Right" expands the crate structure, "Left" collapses the crates.
J.J.
5:26 PM - 25 August, 2010
Thank you. I will try it out. Like native support on my DN-HC4500, I wish you could assign 1 BACK button to switch to the crate view, and expand/collapse while in a Crate. Another push button to switch to the track view, and load to a deck while in the Track View.
I know you can use a button to SHIFT in the xml. Hold 1 MIDI button down and you can assign all the other buttons to do another command. But can you assign 1 button to do a layer SHIFT, so you don't have to hold that button down?

Thank you for the support Konix. Samuel from Serato Support responded to my help.
"Can you disable Video-SL in the plug-ins section of the setup screen? It looks like if you have this enabled it tries to do a video crossfade."
I disabled the Video-SL in the plug-ins section and the 'Left' (collapse) and 'Right' (expand) now work.
However, I do use video. Is there any way to have it expand/collapse the crates versus a video crossfade? My Sixty-Eight crossfader is already tide to the video crossfade.
Is there any way to design a MIDI command to do the exact same thing as the BACK button on the Sixty-Eight mixer or even the DN-HC4500 19" controller? The way it works on both of them is the BACK button goes from tracks to crates. While in the crates, the BACK button now expands/collapses the crates. Another button switches focus from the crates to the tracks and while in the tracks, it loads the song.

This one's a bit interesting. Most of you are probably already familiar with nik's Scratch Tools program. This new program is similar to Scratch Tools, but only does one thing...sync folders to crates/subcrates. But this program is, no offense nik, not nearly as difficult/confusing as Scratch Tools.
You probably haven't seen the original thread as it was posted in the Itch forum, but for those that want to read more... serato.com
nice!!
wish there was a way to only load crates not sub crates.
right now im getting massive scratchlive errors due to numerous sub folders within my main folders.

Yep, I installed it right after Konix posted the vid...works fine...luv it!
Just have one question. In my music library I have an folder scratchlive and an scratchlive backup folder...sync all folders of my library means the programm creates these two folders and put them into my SSL as new crates. After the sync process I always delete them...help a brother out...do I need those two folders in my music library, is it normal that they are there, or was it me who put them there?

It there because you music files is at the root of my music along with your scratchlive folder. but if you made a folder ex. Dj music, put all your music files in that folder, leave scratchlive folder at root my music. Setup your itch.properties file with the correct settings and your good to go.
Btw. It's normal to have scratchlive folder in my music.

Are you having any problems with the sync program Jensen? It doesn't matter where the folder is that contains your music, it can be anywhere. As for the ScratchLIVE and ScratchLIVEBackup folders, the Backup folder is just that, a backup copy of the ScratchLIVE folder. Scratch Live makes this folder on exit once a week, so in case you accidentally delete a crate, or anything bad happens to your SSL database, you have a recent backup to fall back to.
Jensen Määäm
3:54 AM - 2 October, 2010
No, I don't have problems with it, it works, it's syncronizing folder with crates and subcrates. It's just every time I use it, it adds 3 crates to my SSL, that are unnecessary:
scratchlive, scratchlive backup and ... all I do is deleting them and I'm good to go.
But, I think I'm doing something wrong and I want to avoid tha extra step of creating and deleting those crates.

Well, it will make a crate for every folder in the main parent folder you specify. If you're syncing your main My Music folder, which contains the ScratchLIVE and ScratchLIVEBackup folders, then it's going to make a crate for those folders.
Maybe you can make a suggestion to the author of the program to make it so if you specify your My Music folder it excludes the ScratchLIVE/Backup folders as crates...serato.com

But I'm betting I'll always be doing this manually. ie: no perfect sync will ever occour ;)

if you play on two decks only, then wouldn't it be easier to do the follwing:
the two turntables go into channel 1 and 2 inputs.
channel 1 and 2 outputs go back into channel 3 and 4 inputs of the same SL-4 box
channel 3 and 4 outputs then go into the mixer.
DJ A selects decks 1 and 2 as primary.
DJ B selects decks 3 and 4 as primary.
now DJ B sets both his decks to "thru"
now DJ a can play.
to switch, DJ A switches a deck to "thru" in his scratchlive,
then dj B turns his thru off and he can play on that deck.
and when they both switch to "thru", they can play vinyl.
advantage: just one (MIDI MAPPABLE!!) button per DJ instead of a (NOT MIDI MAPPABLE!) drop-down menu.

^If you don't have subfolders in your music library on your hard drive and you'll run this programm, then it will syncronize your one and only folder where you store all your music in with your crate in SSL.
The program does sync folders and crates you have on your hard drive and in SSL. If you have a crate xy in SSL but this is not a folder in your music library, the program won't touch it and it will be still in your SSL after running this program.

Hey Konix...... I know you have something similar to what i'm about to ask for but i think it can be useful because i just had to do it and it was not hard but it did take a lil experimentation.
Can you make a video for folks that need to combine two _SERATO_ folders into one.
EX... if you have music in both internal and external and you want to move all into one ( all to external or all to internal).

I'm no programer, but it just seems to be a GUI bug at its core. The FX clearly do work, however, something in the code isn't registering the deck 1/deck 2 buttons as being active until deselected and reselected, or you deselect/reselect the FX plugin in the setup menu.
But, Serato already confirmed this fixed for the next version.

I recorded my new years set and it was so annoying when i went back and could tell the times where i wanted to have an effect do something and it didnt. totall killed a few transitions. two voices at full volume right on top of eachother... grrrrr pet peeves

Konix- Im looking to clean up my folders on my internal and want them more organized. I do know there is a way to export actual crates and create new music folders after you export the crate. What is the proper way to do it if i am using a track on separate crates and want that track copied to other exported crates. i know if you move the file and use MOVE the Next crate will not have the file because the original file will be moved.
I cant find a video to this!

Great work as always Konix!
Thought Id mention, the Robot FX does some filtering to more or less "focus" on the singers voice, and adds "robot" distortion. So it's not a regular pitch shifter. DJs who play gangsta rap, southern rap, etc, know already. Use moderate percentage, something like 20 or 40% and moderate depth for best results. Yes, I do think it can be real cheesy, but still fun sometimes.

Im not Konix but on that 2.3.3 you should know this. You have to reanalyze all your files again after which at least for me it rewrites the tags after I eject/play each video. Overall I am happy with 2.3.3 it's solid like 1.92 just wish it would rewrite tags while analyze....

you just have to realize what is happening as you play through your tracks.
You would probably want to avoid loading tracks rapidly in succession that haven't been loaded yet.
If you play regularly you just have to deal with it until you cycle through your mainstays. If you load a track you haven't played in a while just realize it will take a few seconds to loaded and ready to go.
I have 30K tracks so I am not going to load them all. If I catch the tag writing after I load a new track I just give it a few seconds and it all comes back to normal. It also helps to spin the track back a little bit if the waveform isn't loading right away

Humm ,,, just so you know it's not like that for me and I am sure they designed it to write tags after you eject the song because the previous version did it while playing the video and that was all fucked up. I have no lag or load issues at all. It just writes tags which is stupid because that should be part of the analyze.

In the serato software change record option to mic. just make sure your mic gain is a zero on the interface. The mixes never sound like ish either. I just do a lil editing with another program like normalizing, hiss reduce, convert to mp3 etc..
Why don't you just record directly in serato? This method sounds like a ball ache to me.

You would either need the 57,61,62 or 68 to do this,
or route the mixer output into the aux input of the SL3/SL4.

2 quick questions on this one.
what if you have 2 serato root folders.
IE, on my internal I have music
and on my external i have video
each root has a _serato_ folder. but it looks like in configure you can only add one
and if you do add one, will this break the connectivity of the other location in the library.
(perhaps the devs can add a 2nd drive option in the config, I know alot of video djs operate on 2 drives.
2. you mentioned slower load times and such. is that everytime you open ssl, or only after an update/new tracks.?

Konix, did you try those emoji stars on both ssl and sdj? And what os? And all file types? On my non dj rig 10.7 with ssl 2.4.4 it was "buggy", ie it converted the stars into "jibnerish" characters once the tag was written. Also, does it work with smart crates?
Will try with my 10.8 dj machine on 2.5 as soon as I get the chance.
Thanks, Warp.

I figured why I had issuse getting this to work, and thought I'd share:
I've always used the comment field for my star ratings, using regular text.
so when trying out Emoji icons, I used this field. Big mistake! for some reason, this field will convert the icon into useles text characters after load/analyze.
Before load/analyze: www.flickr.com
After load/analyze: www.flickr.com
But when using "composer" or "remixer" fields,
it works just as Konix describes. GREAT FIND!
Can confirm that this "system" works with smart crates :D
Thanks again Konix!!

good tutorial Konix, Thanks for sharing! i also use cue points for visual aid to mark where i should trigger the next cue point hehe, i think its time serato increases the amount of cue points allowed, at least maybe like when using flip mode because i already ran out of cue points a few times when doing some "remixing" to get it saved on a flip slot.
