they're producers, how can you perfom electronic production live? The only group I seen do that is Daft Punk.

At least Daft Punk does twiddle some knobs that work... A midi controller that is clearly not hooked up is like Funkmaster Flex in 90's hiphop videos, pretending to rock a party and the mixer wasnt hooked up.
DJ Sniffles
4:57 AM - 20 November, 2008
Hahaha...I'm guessing you dont know what daft punk does on their shows. They dont "DJ". Its all symths, samplers, sequencers, and drum machines reproducing music live on the fly. A little more than twiddling knobs

saw daft punk last year and im a little skeptical if they do ANYTHING live.
a few weeks before the gig a mate gave us a daft punk mix cd "alive 2007 live in japan" so we were hammering it in the car for ages.
we played it on the way to the gig and when daft punk came on they played the EXACT same set as the cd we were listening to. track for track, trick for trick. who knows if they just whacked on the same cd over the p.a and pretended to tweak knobs on their space ship.
who knows if it was even really daft punk under those masks.

first of all this wasn't a live set it was an ableton dj set
similar but different
Gaspard offers a reasonable explanation:
"Yeah, shit happens! I remember the story, I couldn't remember the city but i think it was in Manchester. I didn't noticed at first, because as you can see I was looking at the computer to launch the next vocal hook and right after I realised that the blue screen went black, so there was no way possible it could work. So I plugged it back in, big deal! And the next thing you know is this picture."

If you produced a lot of original material that didn't have an artist using that material...then play it live, or reproduce it live, then yea i'd say so. Thats the thing. While they are DJs, they are producers, and thats why people go to see them. to hear their music.

Blame the record labels etc. Justice never intended to be anything except producers. But their tracks took off and the found their self in a commercial situation where there was a demand to hear just Justice, and not a DJ playing their tracks once in a while. I have seen Justice a few times, and never was under any illusion that they were able to a live set. At the end of the day 90% of pop music artist mime in some way or another from Britney Spears to Madonna, to some Rock groups and some hip hop artist. The majority of people will want to make money in the easiest and the cheapest way possible. Its the way the world works.

They're making that kind of scratch, touring the world playing these huge shows, and they can't afford a $10 AC adapter so they're not running that MPD24 off of USB bus power?
Maybe I'm the over-prepared type, maybe it's from playing in bands, but I have doubles of every kind of connection quickly available on hand, and if it can be powered externally, it is.
Also, wouldn't you need to restart whatever software you were using if this happened?

To be honest, they're both very different and good at what they do. I just think that Enferno is one of a kind when it comes to live shows. What Daft Punk does live (and I'm assuming that they're actually DOING it) can be pulled off by anyone. Their music is great, no doubt, but I'm talking about live performance here. Enferno > Daft Punk, IMO.

Yo, Justice doesn't hook up their equipmet. They'd rely on the venue/promoter to have things per their contract. How many of us are checking all the wires at the club if you find all the equipment as you requested?

as a live act..... if you gave enferno the multi million dollar laser light show, with his live skills then i would show more interest, but thats just me... i would like to enjoy the live talent, not hear the same production i heard on my drive there that came out of the studio. LIVE means actually doing something live to contribute to the show... thats the point of being "live" we didn't come to see you turn some knobs to eq the pre-recorded album some more and through in some phasers like you local guitar center regular, hire some lighting and visual guy to do your lights while you actually apply yourself to your set.

Yeah I understand that, but I'm assuming there's a bare minimum of computer-related stuff (i.e. a laptop with their multi-tracks) they're bringing to every show...unless part of their rider is having the CD inserted in the club's sound system and ready to go. haha.

So they don't actually DJ. then why fake it. I would just stand their and be a fucking wavie while talking to the crowd about how dope my music is.
on that note:
I spun at a club in hollywood more than a couple of years back and was shooting the shit with the sound guy. The sound guy proceeds to tell me that Van Dyke was the last person to touch the decks. I thought that was cool and I told him. He then proceeds to laugh in my face and tell me Van Dyke literally plugged in his laptop and push play... nothing else. I told the sound guy that was the dopest thing i've ever heard since he got paid a LARGE amount for doing nothing. And remember that this was the time, huge house djs were gettting paid 5 figures for clubs.

it's rather sad how lazy programs like ableton have made people - especially considering what kind of cool things you can actually do in Live that would be comparable to a true "live" performance (triggering effects in a pre-arranged set doesn't count as live to me) or even worse, "djing" with ableton...
Guys like Enferno and Lamont on the DJ side are amazing.
But check out some of the non-DJ live performers too like Kid Beyond, Nicholas Bates, and tons others that use ableton in conjunction with actual live instruments looping and effecting the music they're making in realtime.

reconnect cable- go on with the show- no biggie
and their live sets they are actually taking pieces of multiple songs and layering them upon each other live, so really it is live. no 2 shows are exactly alike

well true, but it's different using say ableton to mix a bunch of tunes you produced yourself, layers, etc. cuz you MADE the tunes. if you're a producer only, but make badass tunes and can't mix records, you still have to find a way to make them work in a live situation. making a mixtape of other people's shit ain't even the same thing as making a mixtape of your own shit. that's sorta what i meant.

I saw the Chemical Brothers back in 1999 and it was a mind-blowing show. From what I could tell, they were reconstructing the tracks from scratch. I was really impressed at how it seemed like they were jamming out their tracks--nothing sounded like the album version. I guess they made loops of each individual track from each song??? And they had LOADS of equipment--it looked like a labyrinth on stage. Tom was pretty much posted up the whole show at a giant mixer while Ed ran around triggering samples and shit; he was even drumming out parts with drum sticks for some tracks.
Doing live electronic music is tough but not impossible. Impressive when it's done well, disappointing when someone's fakin the funk.

That, and I've seen a lot of these groups perform, and most of the time I'll make my way behind the group somehow so I can scam. I dunno if you've seen or heard a Justice set but they do a lot of reconstructing. Also, for the groups that SPIN their sets, instead of reworking in Ableton and whatever, they do a pretty good job at that also. So...I dunno.
