Exactly how does auto gain work?
I ask because I keep clipping too easily.
Does the auto gain work through the analyze procedure or is it simply a thing of setting the auto gain value to under 92db?
I hope I'm making myself understood.
Will I have to set the autogain lower and then re analyze everything?
Or
Do I just have to set the autogain lower and continue dj'ing as usual.

Hi Dj City,
Thanks for get in touch with us. Here is the good article to read it's about the how auto gain work. (serato.com)
If your files are already analyzed you don't need to analyze again after changed your auto gain levels. (Eg. 92db to 89db)
Auto gain functionality is for adjusting all the files in your library to the same volume level and they are not for avoid clipping 100%.
Avoid clipping (EQing) is part of your mixing process. Keep check the LED audio level meter on your mixer and all the levels are not hitting red. Adjust the sound system If you need to go louder. (Amp, Speakers)
I hope this clears things up for you.
Kind Regards
Rui

I would like to comment on this topic. I have analyzed all my files and they are (some) still playing at different volumes. So I think I understand what his concerns are. How do you make all file(s) at the same volume level (are as close as possible). I've changed my gain setting and nothing seems to work. Don't like what some songs come on MUCH LOUDER than others

Look at the quality of the songs. Are they all wav or are some mp3? That would affect levels and the quality of the production could be different.

Hi Rui
Thanks for the reply.
My issue is that SDJ clips very easily. My mixer is NEVER in the red! Channels don't hit red and master does not hit red. I am one of those DJ's that believe red really means STOP.
I find myself actively adjusting the EQ's, gains and sometimes the master to try to avoid the limiter light. The software limiter light comes on but all my levels are in the green or yellow (Never RED).
SDJ clips and limits waaaaaaaay easier than itch does.
I don't understand why and I really want to have it set up to where SDJ does not clip as much and my tracks play consistently at the same volume via autogain.
Itch seemed to have this nailed but SDJ is proving to be a pain in the butt regarding autogain and software limiting.
A little more guidance would really be appreciated.

A little more work on the gain structure of SDJ would be a good thing too.
I have seen an awful lot of people posting about the limiter light coming on too easily in SDJ.
If Serato does not see an issue here, I am hoping that I will at least be able to get this issue under control with a little more help.

Hi DjCity,
I got you. Maybe I can help you out this issue. Serato DJ has software output level control knob on top of the Serato DJ main screen (ITCH has it as well but only show up on offline mode). This "Master Output Level" knob sets the final volume level of the main mix at the software output, before it is sent to the hardware. This output level can be adjusted from -12dB (all the way to the left) to +12dB (all the way to the right).
First thing you should try is adjust the knob all the way to the left (OR about 9 o'clock) and see if clipping is occur. This knob doesn't linked to your DDJ-SX master gain and this adjustment would help your software clipping issue.
On a side note,
control + click the Master Output Level to reset to 12 o'clock (0dB). When audio is at this level all green segments on the meter are lit.
alt + click the Master Output Level to reset to the +3dB "no headroom" setting. When audio is at this level all green and yellow segments on the meter are lit.
My personal setups on Serato DJ is,
- Autogain (92dB)
- Master Output Level (10 ~ 11 o'clock)
I really hope this helps you out. Please let me know how it go.
Kind Regards
Rui

Thanks Rui
Let me ask you this...
I usually run QSC KW181 subs and they are usually set to about 9:00 (1/4 volume).
The tops I usually run are EV ZLX112P's set to -2 OR EV ELX115P's set to about 10:00 or 11:00.
The Master on the DDJ SX is usually at about 11:00 to 12:00 with the Ch gains at about 10:00.
Based on where you say I should have my settings in SDJ, how should I have my master and gains set on my Pioneer DDJ SX and where should I have my volumes on my speakers?
I need loud, CLEAR sound. I HATE distortion. I am really looking to have the sound I want and need without clipping the speakers or the software.
I know i'm getting specific and I hope you are familiar with the speakers I mentioned.
I am hoping that the extra information will help you understand what it is that I am using and therefore allow you to help me get the sound I need without clipping or limiting.
Thank you.

One last thing (I hope).
How do I get the individual tracks to be only in the green?
When I analyzed my tracks, most of them are green, yellow and sometimes touch red.
I really don't want to manually adjust thousands of tracks to get it under control.

What I could suggest is use Auto Gain 89dB and see how it go. Auto gain is not always perfect so you might need to adjust manually.
