Hi,

Is it possible to ensure a smooth transition (ie. the DJ following me mixing in the song as opposed to cutting the music) with the following setup:

- 2 x CDJ 2000 nexus in HID mode
- 1 DJM 900
- 1 SL3 (or 2 if need be)
- 1 USB hub (since we will be using Mac's with only 2 USB ports)
- we each will be using our own laptops

If this proves to be impossible (after spending 4 hours researching it appears to be the case) what could be a solution?

Personally, I don't mind if the CDJ's are not in HID mode. I know the DJ who will play after me absolutely wants this. So I'm willing to play with control CD's and use an X1 to interface with serato scratch live (ie. load tracks, trigger effects etc.). I can also bring my own mixer (TTM57SL) if this can solve the problem.

Please provide as much detail as possible (diagram?) for how to do this.

Many thanks!

Its not ideal if you are playing back to back but if you are simply swapping to the second dj all you need to do is unplug the USB hub the CDJs are plugged into on Computer A and plug it into Computer B. Of course you'll have to select what decks the CDJs control once they are plugged into Computer B.

If you don't want any break in audio you'll want to plug each CDJ in separately and choose their appropriate decks.

Thanks Zach

I attached the setup diagram as I see it. Note that both laptops only have 2 usb ports and only DJ #1 will use the X1.

Chronologically, you recommend to:
1- Unplug 1 CDJ from the USB HUB and plug it directly to Laptop #2.
2- ???

I don't see how the audio won't break if eventually you have to unplug the USB hub from laptop #1.

Image doesn't seem to work.

In the Setup above I would suggest putting one of the CDJs in CD mode and playing a regular CD while you change over.
Once a regular CD is playing simply unplug the hub and the SL3 from Computer A and plug into Computer B.
Initialize SSL and CDJs on Computer B and mix into the regular CD. Once the mix is done put the CD player back into HID mode.

You will need to plug the audio output of one (or both) of the CD players into the input(s) of the SL3 or just plug them directly into line or CD inputs on the mixer.

Also know the hub does not go into the SL3 as your diagram suggests.
USB output of the CD players into the hub and the hub into one of the computers.

I know, but the serato box goes into the hub, no?

Is there any way to avoid having to play a regular CD?

How about daisy chaining 2 SL3's ?
serato.com

How would this work if DJ #2 wants to use HID mode?

FYI: both DJ's won't be playing simultaneously. DJ #2 will follow DJ #1 for the rest of the night.

Thanks

The hub does NOT go into the Rane box.

You can use two SL3s and they wouldn't even need to be daisy chained.
Maybe have an additional USB hub that is already plugged into computer B.

Run the outputs of both SL3s into line/cd inputs on the 900.
When DJ A is playing his last track unplug the open CDJ from the hub that is connected to Computer A and plug it into the hub that is connected to computer B.
Initialize the deck and then mix into the track coming from Computer A.
Once mixed over, unplug the other CDJ from the hub that is still connected to Computer A, plug it into the hub that is connected to computer B, and initialize the remaining deck.
Done:)

Cool.

See the revised diagram: img42.com

You don't mention unplugin the RCA wire from the left SL3 box and plugin it in the right SL3 box (one CDJ after the other). I suppose we have to do this as well?

And just to reconfirm that all of this will work while the CDJ's are in HID mode?

Many thanks

In HID Mode you done even need the rca's from the cdj to the sl box :-) Only if you plan on playing a cd or going back to control cd during the night would you need them

So only RCA's from the SL3 boxes (output) to the DJM900 (input) ?

Correct. Left/right deck outputs of SL3 box 1 go into line or cd inputs on the 900 and left/right deck outputs of SL3 box 2 into separate line or cd inputs on the 900.

And yes.. no need to plug the CDJs into either SL3 (or mixer) if you aren't going to be playing any regular CDs or using the control CD.

Great!
Thanks a lot for your answers.

So....

I will only have access to 1 SL3 for this gig. Therefore the above setup won't work as planned.

My question: can I use my TTM57 for my part of the gig and have DJ #2 use the DJM900 for his set? The requirement of having a smooth transition without using regular CD's still stands. How would this work exactly?

Thoughts anyone?

Run the output of either mixer into an input of either mixer.

The only thing connecting to the two setups would be one rca cable.

Switching over the CDJs would work the same as with two SL3s.

Got it!
