Thought of this from reading the "crates load from external when I plug it in thread".
For me it was watching my buddy licking the back of the cartridge thinking this was the fix. When I showed him how to use a pencil to clean the tonearm, he was amazed at how much black gunk came out of there.
2nd would be Pong, ive turned it on a few times while people weren't looking only to have them freak out a bit for a second or two.

I had this buddy that used to clean the inside of his tonearms with eraser from a pencil. Works great as a temporary fix. However when I showed him that the rubber causes the copper contacts to degrade and wear out to the point of being unusable he quickly stopped.

Deoxit, yes. And the reason dudes would lick the carts wasn't to clean them, but to help them make better contact with the tonarm contact points. Ortofons are notorious for having shitty contacts and I would often have to lick them to get both left and right signal.

Agreed. How many people have a basic understanding of the science of audio? DJ's running in the red should be punishable by prison sentences. Another reason why djing should be regulated by a board of trustees and unionized. Must qualify by passing a series of tests to become a DJ. That would relieve the world from phonies.

Hell, well for starters
1. Not knowing how to mount a Headshell, forget about balance...
2. Pre-Serato, cats not paying attention to the LEFT AND RIGHT (Red/White) channel setup.
3. Hell, cats using Banana plugs IN REVERSE...
4. Cats trying to so call "Bridge" an amp, but NOT connecting the speaker wires across both "+" connections, so now they only get half of the wattage.
5. Not caring about a good STEREO output from the mixer, or sometimes using Y-Jacks..wtf?
6. That using Aluminum Foil is NOT the permanent fix for a blown fuse.
7. That if you spill beer or something into the pitch, it WILL fail.
8. That you don't equalize your entire system on the damn mixer....
9. That you can't plug two different amps into the same speaker.
10. That someone WILL steal your cartridges right off of your turntables if you aren't looking.

- that headphones are like underwear: not to be shared
- that "loose" vinyl can be fixed by adjusting the spindle hole size or just flipping over the damn record!
- that disco style on the 1200s actually gives you more control (threw that in for JohnnyM)

How dudes try to play the hottest, newest bangers at 10pm and wonder why they run out of hot shot during prime time.
How dudes play the same song 4 times a night.
How dudes don't know how to duck the mic and sound like ass when they try to yell over the music.

Not knowing the difference between 8 ohm, 4 ohm, and 2 ohm or saying that "less ohms means less quality".. Then knowing how to apply 2 8 ohms to 1 single channel.
Not knowing how match up BPM's and properly mix two songs together, not just blaring a fog horn or dropping into another song.
Not knowing what the key of a song is or why it is important. I get that reading the key by hear is hard for some but c'mon it's pretty useful when you want to blend in or sample certain sounds to a track without completely mixing over to the next track.
Going over the RMS rating or suggested power and blowing a speaker or amp. I remember this one kid, "Oh I saw one guy powering 1500 watts into each one of his LS808's." Yeah that's cause he was probably doing live audio which doesn't have the same processing as an MP3 or wav.
Not knowing the difference between or even knowing what kbps of a track is. This one guy was playing at a house party and it sounded like garbage. I asked him what kbps the track was (after checking his mixer, controller, and amp settings). He had no idea what that was. Dude was playing straight 128 kbps tracks all night that he had apparently "ripped from youtube". Sad.
Just a few things that shocked me. If you don't know audio, how you supposed to be a true turntable DJ? Some dj's should stick to playlist and powered speakers (with limiters).

People that have no idea how to switch out between two serato DJs without using a separate CD/Vinyl/Ipod
People that cannot use internal mode whatsoever. It's not fun, but knowing the keyboard shortcuts has gotten me through a few nights.

The biggest shock I always have is DJ's who carry in one laptop and have absolutely no means of backup (not even regular records or CD's) in case something happened to their computer.
Then if you're "that guy" and ask them what they'd do if the computer failed, they look at you like you slapped their puppy.
