I'm currently using my ever trusty Vestax PMC05 III, and while it works fine, it is getting on in it's years, and since I'm in the Serato market again (don't ask... was broke, started playing gigs where I could get by on only regular vinyl, etc.), I'm debating whether or not to go with a 57 this time.
I don't *need* a new mixer, but it would be nice (was using my buddy's 56 the other night and forgot how buttery smooth and wonderful it makes things sound compared the harsh Vestax). However, my main concern is having a fairly versatile setup, i.e. not having issues where an 57 simply can't be used due to space constraints at certain venues.
Video doesn't mean anything to me, but when I do use serato for my sets, I live and die by taking advantage of things like loops, cue points, etc., though I've never had issues doing them on the laptop keyboard.
Any other cons you i'm not thinking of, price excluded?

I had the same situation when I got my 57sl I needed a new mixer and didn't have serato at the time. I thought about it for a while and while you can use other mixers with the sl1, the 57sl to me was the way to go because it was a top of the line mixer and I didn't need to worry about connecting the sl1 to anything. What I would reccommend is getting a warranty for it. I personaly get a warranty for anything that costs over $1000 and get the Rane Case for it. I'm actually looking at cases myself right now and while the rane cases are a little expensive, I want a case that actually fits my mixer not something that is going to press against the knobs and faders. It's a little bit more but the Rane case is an investment for your investment (the 57/56)

It sucks tho when you rock the 57 that you cant spin at certain venues where you can't bring your own mixer, cuz the setup it fixed or whatever. I don't have a 57, but I still prefer using my own 2-channel Pioneer 707, but if I can't and I don't wanna pass up the gig, I can always still use Serato.

Not a fan of the "combo" deal.... that is with anything (even powered speakers)..
Every piece of equipment should have its purpose... not do three things.
If the SL1 goes bad... you have CD's, vinyl to get you by....
If the 57 goes bad you are without a mixer and SL..
Thats my opinion.... there is no doubt that the 57 is a thing of beauty. After using Young Herraras I was on the hunt for a Rane mixer. Your right about the faders being butter. I decided on the Empath...

It's no different really than if his Vestax goes bad though... I have both but swear by my 57SL and with Rane's support services, I sleep well at night knowing if either ever have a problem I can have it fixed pretty quickly. I understand about being SOL with both a mixer and Serato if the 57 goes out, but to me it's worth that risk... then again like I said, we have the SL1 and a backup mixer so different situation... I still endorse the 57SL though...

I went for both, but one or the other...57! So much fun. Probably my favorite mixer to play on.

yeah that's what i thought, on top of that pelican cases are the best, but i found it to be a bad fit, with a heap of pressure on the faceplate. i'm now going to tear all the foam out and get some cut that fits. my first (and hopefully only) bad experience with a Rane product.

as of 2008, Rane 56 was the only mixer in use for the US finals. Not sure what was used at the worlds tho.

You bring up an excellent point that I have a half-ass fix for. If my 57 goes out at a gig, then I have a regular mixer to fall back on. However, since I wouldn't be able to use Serato, I can bring out my CD book to play music the old fashion way using the CD players, and hook up iTunes to one of the mixer's inputs to play whatever I don't have on CD.

Good point. I'm really just leaning towards just going with the SL-1 again.

Well.... when its your back up... you cant worry about it being "half assed" you gotta just do the best you can with the cards you have been dealt.... I kind of think it would be a lil rush to do a set using iTunes and a regular CD player... what a challenge!!! lol
I used to keep an iPod with me and some CD's... thinking I could make something work out of that. You know once a key part of your setup goes its all about limiting the damage to your set and keeping the party going.
The combo deal is really just my own opinion for everything in life. Cars with built in navi, mixers with built in effects, powered speakers, scanners/copiers/printer/fax combos.... whatever.... if one part goes you have to do without the entire piece til it is fixed and returned to you.

57 has benefits the SL1 does not... like video and effects...
I think the guys in this thread are trying to give all angles so you can make the choice that you are most comfortable with. I am on my 4th mixer within 2 years and i think I finally got it right!! lol (As in it does everything I need it to)

Ah mate, totally get where you’re coming from. The 57 is a beaut, no doubt buttery smooth faders, that analog warmth you miss from the Vestax, all that jazz. I hear ya on the versatility front though it can be a bit of a beast to lug into smaller venues. Not just size, but the weight and footprint, especially if you’re working a tight booth.
Another thing to consider is that the 57 doesn’t really change the fact that you’re still relying on your laptop for Serato features if you’re already comfy doing loops, cue points, etc., on your keyboard, you won’t lose anything, but the 57 doesn’t magically make laptop control more intuitive; it’s more about tactile niceness. Also, some people mention the EQs are a bit smooth, which is great for mixing vinyl, but can be a little soft if you’re used to snappy, aggressive EQ cuts on the Vestax.
check out the forum <a href="serato.com Rane or S9 replacement</a>
It covers a lot of discussion around mixer size, gig‑compatibility and switching hardware should tie in nicely with your debate about the 57 vs your existing setup.
Other than that, it’s pretty much just a solid upgrade. Space-wise, check booth layouts before committing some tiny bars/rooms might make you wish you’d gone 56 or even something more compact. But if you’re mostly gigging medium‑sized spots, it’s hard to go wrong.
Basically: buttery faders, fantastic feel, doesn’t fix laptop reliance, and watch the footprint. Other than that, pure joy.

Oh, and on the lugging front, I've kept mine organised sharp as a tack in toolbox foam inserts from Shadow Foam here's the link shadowfoam.com custom-cut jobs that hug every fader and jog wheel like a glove, no rattles or regrets on the road. Game-changer for keeping the rig pristine between gigs. Cheers for the nudge, solid chat!
