I run a mobile DJ business where we use 3 NS7 as our main system and have a few total controls with VDJ as back up and use for smaller weddings and all. Any way one of these total controls crapped out so we purchased a mixtrack pro and i used it last night for a wedding to test it and make sure all works well...although the unit is great...vdj, damn man, after 2 years of not really using it, its tought to go back. First off the software is so over crowded and its just not itch...nothing is.
As good as the controller is, its not the same as an itch controller. I truly feel VDJ djs are not real jocks. These guys cannot rock a crowd with skill like how you can in itch, it just cheats for you. Even the feel of the scratching and the overall is not the same man.
Dont know how they can call themselves DJs. Ya despite all that VDJ offers, all the djs that use it probably use xmixes , funkymixes and cannot get creative.
If they ca, we would see videos similar to cerlas, the reason why there are not is bc its baby software.

Already breaking from your topic i know but....
Does the DJ community really look down on people who use remixes, edits or re-drums from dj music pools?
Cuz those tracks help me so much when i dj, I use the intros and accapella outs to make some funky live remixes using loop roll. Also the re-drums can be great when u wanna throw in a random change in genre but keep people dancing.
I obviously never take credit for making those edits or remixes, so would all other DJ's call me fake cuz I don't use the official radio edit?

First of all... dont bash vdj! its basically an entry level software for entry-mid level djs (even vdj pro) in my eyes. i was a vdj user myself and it helped me to learn how to organize music on my computer, optimize a computer for dj use and so on, but if u have ns7+itch as main setup, why not use vci-300s as the backup? I think its a bit too much to use a different controller AND software as backup?

If you would do some search on youtube you'd find out Cerla has done multiple videos using VDJ to mix videos.
I don't understand why the bashing of other software when alot of us started using such softwares. Even now you'd admit to using it as your back up. I have the same set up u have have, and like your self i use Itch as my primary software and VDJ as my back up but depending on the gig i might use VDJ as my primary ( mostly for video).

I wonder if somebody out there doesn't think im a real Jock cause i use serato and itch? im sure there are, cause itch and serato are nothing like traktor, some may even call it "baby software" compare to traktor......... and on top of that, i do use remixes....................thats it, i will sell everything and quit djing.

I disagree with all of your statements DJFluke. You basically just generalized a whole population based of users. Yes Serato djs will trend to be more "pro" if you will since there is typically more investment required but i'm sure there are tons of Serato DJs who are below semi-pro and even entry level standards. The software does not and will not make the DJ or quality of DJ.

Also keep in mind while the U.S. may be dominated by Serato as club standard, it is not always the case in other parts of the world especially Latin American and Europe.

Hey guys, sorry for not replying, just have so much going on... Im not knocking VDJ but and i do understand some use it and etc. But i forgot how easy this software is.. Like how you can keyloack cue points to ALWAYS be on beat? When you hit play, loops. Like it can be done where as you never go off beat. It just kind of knocks the fun out of it... And yes i used those features as i was testing the mixtrack pro and i didnt know what to expect. But it got boring one hour in so i started just mixing regularly...
To those using the edits...You guys dont get bored mixing 16 beats in 16 beats out? Like the mixes sound all the same no? Its not about taking credit for making these mixes, but more of being repetetive.
And i do beleive a DJ can rock a crowd using anything, but its a self feeling, i feel better when im comfortable and having fun not doing the smae shit and knowing what to expect.
For the one who asked why dont use a backup itch with a VCI, cost my friend, cost. the mix track pro cost me 250 shipped and is great for ceremonies at weddings and smaller parties. VCI is what 5-8 bills depending if its MK1 or MK2. Not really worth it consideringthe NS7 blows it ;)
Anyway to each his own. Itch 2 seems good, played with it a bit.
All the best.

hell in North Carolina we did house partys with two tape decks. And I for one still remember carrot being my first on a lunchbox portable computer

Of course they are. "If you use those services or Virtual DJ, you shouldn't even call yourself a DJ. You're a Disgrace to the industry, the craft, and yourself and should be shot on sight for your blasphemous actions. Hell, why do you even have a controller? For that matter, why do you even have a laptop? You're not a DJ unless you've got a Pioneer DJM-900 and two Technics. It doesn't matter what model. Sure, using Serato CV-02's in conjunction with the SL* Box is equivalent to using a controller, but we're better than you because we use vinyl! We're keeping it old school! How dare these guys actually buy those controllers. Who made them, Playskool? Where'd you buy it, Toy's 'R Us? Haha. I'm better than you because I use turntables. Hell, the guy who uses CDJ's is better than you too. I'm better than him, but he's better than you. Why don't you go run along and play with your speak-and-spell. Isn't that what you kids call a sampler these days?"
Yes, I did just wantonly rant to hell. But that's the general feeling of elitism which seems to be spread around here on this entire forum (especially in the Scratch Live discussion area or on General DJ Discussion); and now that Serato DJ Intro is out, it's only gotten and will continue to get worse.
Some would just as quickly argue that ITCH cheats for you. Something about this magical auto-sync button that makes you the best DJ ever: Picks your songs, matches BPMs and keys perfectly, brings it in on exactly the right beat with absolutely the best transitions known to modern man, modifies EQ's and sets gains appropriately so you're not clipping. That little SYNC button works magic.
Also, the (not) having ability to scratch or does not make the DJ.
I think this proves my point entirely.

What does it matter what Software/equipment you use to play as long as you rock the crowd.
Yes I use the sync button - do I need to - hell no!, It just makes it easier for me.
Yes I have Funky/ultra/X-mix - extended edits too - but I use them as necessary.
When I played vinyl was it cheating to have the BPM written on records, mark the first beat with tape, -no - just something to make life easier
I still use my 57 with 1200's for video weekly. occasionally VDJ w/VCI for video - don't like it - but it works , Im just used to my keyboard shortcuts and midi maps in serato.
People bitch about what software / gear we have. Who really gives a fuck?
When I started my gear sucked -
I had a twin tray pioneer CD player, a 5 disk Cd changer, and 1 BELT drive pioneer deck.
all this hooked up to a gemini mixer using a home Amp and speakers.
I embrace the NEW gear and technology, and enjoy trying different software - but still enjoy serato :D
Remember.......A Dj is only as good as the musical knowledge they have.

Lofty...right there with ya.
I started with two Technics turntables but they were NOT 1200's.. no pitch slider. Just on/off. The first consumer Radio Shack DJ mixer. 750 45 rpm singles. Pioneer home receiver (SX750) and some surprisingly good home RCA speakers.
As each new technology came out (cassette singles, CDs, digital) I moved to it. 400 CD's were vastly easier to cart around than all those 45s or LPs. I admit I resisted going digital but once I tried Serato, I was instantly sold. And now, A&H Xone:XD. 4 units in one (hub, decks, mixer). Zero to DJ in 10 minutes.
But the real point is....the gear doesn't make the DJ. The quote that tomatoslice gave is spot on. I blew the Pioneer amp at a Christmas party one night...party over early, I still got paid full amount. I forgot about a gig, showed up 90 minutes late. I told the guy that hired me the fee would be whatever he felt would be right. I not only got the full quoted fee, I got booked for the same event the following year. Why? *Because I'm a good DJ*. The equipment may make the job easier, but if someone is not a good DJ, they won't be successful.

Look guy the reality is simple as that: If you mix on a turntable, or a cdj, on serato, on traktor or vdj, even if you mix with musicassettes if you work well it doesn't matter so much. People generally dances and listens to the music you're mixing, they don't watch on your hardware! So, I think that a "pro dj" is a person who's is really good chosing the right track at the right moment to let people to feel good during the night! If your music is good it doesn't matter how you mix it!

BAH. Its also about the DJ and what he uses. Using VDJ with these cheep controllers make it boring. Mixing songs with intros and outros make it boring!!!! Thats what im talking about. The crowd is another thing.
A DJ who goes up with all these songs and all they are doing is blending beat on beat and syncing, thats a fraud. Yes the crowd dosent care, but him as a DJ should not be refered to as a DJ. Thats not djing.
When one starts to implement effects, scratches, loops and others to a mix thats when a DJ should be considered a DJ and not to ONLY use xmixes. I usually find a break in a song and use that as my intro and i get creative with cue points.
People like that are whats causing people to not get DJ for shows. As ANYONE can do it and as much as you fools think no one notices fucking right they do. If they didnt, then a majority of people would not what vdj is or would not have it on their pc as its "cool" All you guys getting offended is because the thruth hurts. You have no real skills.
again the main point, some one who goes and djs with a cheep as midi controller, who uses vdj and uses xmixes and funky mixes is not a dj. its a fraud.
IF you disssgree should me THREE, JUST THREE you tube vids with some real crativity using VDJ. Dont run your mouth, just show me THREE vids.
I can show you over 50 using Serato or tracktor with some real original shit. Again you can talk and run your mouths all you want, just prove me wrong.

Nothing too crazy, scratching is basic and he uses the sampler some. I consider him a DJ even tho he uses a Hercules and VDJ. He goes on tour with it so it must get the job done.
I don't care what software or equipment a DJ uses... but man I really do wish Itch had video like VDJ does.

Disagree? I don't need to disagree. Your entire argument was rendered invalid at this point:
All of these can be done in Virtual DJ, Intro, Traktor, ScratchLive, ITCH, Torq... hell, they can even be done in Deckadance. If that's what makes a DJ, then the game is truly screwed.
Back in the day before there was Serato (or AtomixMP3); before there were EFX boards/engines, loop engines built into programs, etc., there was just a guy with two tables and a crossfader. Was (s)he not a real DJ because of that? I'm asking because if he wasn't, then all those "REAL DJ's" in the General DJ Discussion forum are gonna be pissed.
Though it is a nice skill to have, not every DJ can scratch (and some that can cannot even do it ambidextrously). It has been long established that scratchability does not make the DJ. This is probably the one thing that many people seem to actually be able to agree on. I also have no idea or see any reason why a Four-On-The-Floor would need to be scratched in. Sure, you could, but it's not necessary.
"Holy crap, I can use EFX. I'm the best frakin DJ alive today!" Two words: Pauly D.
I'm also not going to judge the talent level of someone because of what program they use and I'm not going to judge the effectiveness of a program because of some stupid YouTube videos.
Also, considering your prior history on this forum, your arguments really don't hold much water without you seriously increasing your maturity level. The teenage 16 year old DJs who run around here putting in work have a higher level of maturity then you demonstrate regularly. These are some of my personal favorites: serato.com, serato.com
I'm also actually amused. Hypocrisy much? You call yourself a "REAL DJ" because of your software choice, yet not even a year ago you were bashing the utter hell of Serato and "threatening" to go back to Virtual DJ; and here we find you bashing Virtual DJ. This crap is hilarious: serato.com
BTW: Per your own logic, the moment your system went down and you switched over to VDJ with your "cheep as midi controller", you became a... how did you put it... "Fraud"; a "VDJ [dj who is] not [a] real [jock]" and "cannot rock a crowd with skill".
You hate cheap controllers... but you want one now; can't wait to get a bunch of them for your company because it's from Serato, and now you can't wait to drop VDJ? serato.com (Mind you, I couldn't help but notice how you railed against cheap "wack ass" controllers - then admitted to owning a MixTrack Pro which can be had for as little as $108. New (www.amazon.com - $108 from Amazon -- www.overstock.com $115 from Overstock). Also, there's the Numark Total Control you admit to owning (serato.com).
Now do not get me wrong. I absolutely do not knock these controllers at all. They have their purpose and are meant for that. They might not suit my needs but I'm sure they fit someones just fine. What I am saying is that if you're going to knock cheap-controllers, it's probably best to not have admitted to owning them all across this forum for everyone to see.
And you hate SYNC/automix DJs... but what's this? serato.com
Please, re-evaluate your own statement (and spell-check it while you're at it) because while you were busy bashing everyone with a pulse, you forgot to notice that you contradicted your own self on far to many occasions. In my county there's a lot of djs that use Traktor, cause in italy it seems "first choice". But after digging deeper and deeper o figured it out! I don't consider them djs for several reasons: 1 They gig with just one genre of music (minimal techouse) and totally refuse any other genre to play in a consolle! (So I play Pop/dance/R&b and for them I'm just a stupid with 2.000$ djing hardware)
2 they confuse playing minimal house with taking drougs
3 they use traktor in full automatic mode (some mix just with mouse and kontrol x1and a Halle & Heat mixer couse they think it's filter is like the heaven)
4 they don't even know how to put two traks on synch. They don't use pitch control at all!!!
5 they put a new track into the mix just looping it in a 4 beats loop and gradually turning up the volume (OMG)
6 the worst thing.... they don't know how to use the pitch bend, buttons or manually on a jog wheel.
7 They never bought a song! They say that you can't find their music in italy , itunes or beatport!!! (OMG)
What do you think about this kind of djs?

I think it has nothing to do with the software they use. They just can't DJ. I saw a "DJ" the other day using two Technics 1210M5G's with a Pioneer DJM mixer. He used an SL1 interface and ScratchLive. Could he DJ? Not a single bit. Trainwreck mix after trainwreck mix. To try to cover it up, he would open the fader (AND LEAVE IT OPEN) and "scratch" but it was off beat, off time, and sounded horrendous. But he kept doing it. Then he would drop in songs with terrible timing. No pitch adjustment whatsoever and keylock disabled for when he did. Hello, chipmunks! I asked how much they were paying him: $50.
It ain't the equipment or software that makes the DJ, ladies and gents.

Please just take the time to hone the basics of your craft. You don't have to be slash on a guitar just be able to play twinkle twinkle little star on time without major mistakes.

I'm always around, almost bought an NS6 recently but after playing with the VCI400 I was impressed.
I've done something similar to dAb in the past with Android tablets and a custom OSC plugin for VDJ.
Things are changing for me on the VDJ front anyway - I'm probably going to be limiting the amount of free stuff I provide and charging for things instead. I'm also potentially moving video systems too.

I thought it performed very well actually. I used it on the VDJ stand at BPM. Absolutely loved the look and feel of the controller and I thought it was very responsive.
Papa, Yup. I wrote an android app as a test, worked just fine including multitouch. Communicated using OSC and I wrote an OSC plugin for VDJ so no middleware or messing around. Handy for toilet breaks and background music.
