I'm getting mad tired of Tyga requests. I feel like I should just make a crate of his songs and loop that shit all night.

DCD.....true shit, this is the first time L.A. has EVER had an artist that had 8-10 tracks in prime rotation. There's 3-4 other songs he has that I didn't list above that still work in prime time, such as "Bouncin on my dick." Even Snoop in the Doggystyle and Chronic era had 5-6 songs that worked, but not this damn many. And are you in L.A. or somewhere else?

Mine was unbiased as possible...but I also listed the Regional hits as to say that these may or may not work everywhere. Thing is, I had Rack City and "Up" as Regional tracks for last summer, and they ended up becoming nationwide.

So I say we can just list both sides of em. Most artists from outside our state/city that we play aren't gonna be Regional only...but if it's somebody you figure that NOBODY outside your area knows, or if it just feels too regional, just put that as a note. It's good to put those up too, b/c Regional hits end up national months and even years later.

So are we asking what Mainstream Artists tracks are Hot?

I like these threads because it gives me some regional artists that have a catchy beat or hook to add to the set or monthly mixtape.

Songs like...."Snapback and Tattoos - Driicky Graham, I would have never heard of if it weren't for this forum. So now I won't feel so out of touch (and give them that look of stupidity) if a youngster asks me for stuff like this.

And i'm sure it's a few of us that didn't know what a Thun Thun Thun until these threads :)

It should be a balance/mixture of both.

I think everybody knows "The motto" and "Niggas and Paris" are "Hot"...but just as you said, those songs that aren't hot everywhere yet, or are on the bubble and up next should be mentioned too. Shouldn't at all just be the "Billboard Top 10 Rap songs that get played at clubs."

it's big here in FL. I played that shit at a school prom last saturday night. They love MGK. I got on mic and asked the students "if there were any wildboys that go to their school" and then scratched in "yeahh..bitch" yeah.."bitch" call me steve-oooo.. of course it was a clean version but they dug it.

We were at Haute (old club Pearl) on Fridays, but crowd was kinda hood and they shut us down two Fridays ago, so now I might do Forbidden Lounge on Santa Monica/La Cienega twice a month. I do Zen Lounge in Hermosa every other Saturday, or whenever I want to really. I have a monthly at Bronson Bar on Sunset, last Thursday of the month, which is my favorite gig...small dive bar but I can play a LOT of different music, not just the "hot" tracks here.

I did Green Door in Hollywood on Saturdays for most of last year, but they are (supposedly) remodeling that and Cabana to combine them. I had 1835 on Fridays last summer, but it never got poppin like we wanted...I know B.A.D is there on Saturdays now.

I'm DJ'n Paid Dues this Saturday, and did Rock The Bells last year. Everything aside from those monthly/weekly spots is more random and depends on the promoters and DJ's I work with...I did Laugh Factory and Mystudio Grammy's Weekend, and we have a few spots that aren't clubs but we rent them out, mainly Downtown.

I try to play all new shit in the beginning of the night and try to throw it in if its real hot with other shit the sheep know. That is when I do hip hop nights. Now when I do Polka night, I bang new ish to the break of dawn Yo. Non stop heat son.

At my spots, I can always play new Rap, even if they don't know it, but since it's L.A. it almost has to be like 95 BPM +. They never like the 62-75 BPM shit the first time they hear it...so 2 Chainz "Spend it" and even "N'ggas in Paris" didn't get much reaction when we FIRST first played them. But the first time I played "Rack city"......man!!! Best reaction ever

it depends on what you are trying to do. In the club, you play club bangers. Not something with substance. Everybody wants that wild out/do something ridicloulus type music and that's what folks are going to dance to and get more drinks and get loose. Gone are the days where chicks just danced and dudes held the wall all night. Dudes like to act like they are in a rap video or the song is talking about them so they try to act out what's going on in the song. Now your radio show can be what you think hip hop should be or your mix tape. But try to get folks to dance and drink. That's where all the 2 Chainz, Waka Flocka, and Future come in at. Now if it is a showcase, that's when you the "this dj knows the best songs off the best albums and the punch lines" sets like Jazzy Jeff does. I'm just saying. Though.

With Future, I feel like he really is mumbling, and doesn't even have many catchy lines within his verses...it's like OOOOONLY the hook is catchy.

Just like most tracks in the 65-76 BPM range, it's gonna take L.A. people a while to get used to Mykko's track. I dropped it Thursday and they just kinda stood there like "ok...........what's this?" but watch them same fuckers request it in 3-4 months.

Make it rain, Cashin out, and a few of those type tracks here are the same. They only give you instant reaction to 95+ BPM tracks like the YG and Tyga ones.

I guess it's shocking because most Regional songs either blow up 1-2 years later nationwide, or NEVER. It's rare that a song can live for ten damn years and make it somewhere else. The sound usually has changed so much within that period, and it usually becomes forgotten about.

There are some old songs I dig up and put on in L.A. like "Get it ready" from DJ Jubilee, "Who u wit" from Lil Jon, that were big in the South but never really made it out...and they work like they're brand new, even to folks who never heard em.

Every since Midnight Star, I've always known slow jams to be really slow R&B ballad-type tracks or love songs. I guess the new generation loses site on what's what and redefines things where it seems convenient.

I still wouldn't call it a slow jam, but in the modern era, I would call "Come and talk to me" "Touch me tease me" and even "Crush on you" something like Slow Jams, or even "mid-slow" jams that are a lot more toned down than the hype songs we usually play...and "Some cut" fits in that set.

Okay, a mid-slow "Come and Talk to Me"... yes, it's sentimental and romantic (a ballad or love song). "Crush on You"... not so much. Can you imagine yourself slow dancing or being in a romantic situation with someone with that or the Trillville song? I hope not. Imagine dropping that at a wedding for the bride and groom's first dance or at a prom for the newly crowned king and queen.

"Motivation" or "Take You Down" comes to mind too when I think of modern slow jams. They're slow, romantic ballads with and R&B'ish flavor. Let's not stretch the genre boundaries so far that it loses sight of the original meaning.

I was using that terminology based on both what the crowd and mood is/becomes when I drop it. I'll take it back and agree it's more of a mid-slow RnB jam then a slow jam. But that is as slow as I can dip at the clubs I work at, possibly to many uppers to get romantic. And I don't do grown folks parties usually.

Yea and I mean I wasn't the one who called it a slow jam but I just understood that it could fit into the same crate/set as a lot of those tracks.

I actually have like 3-4 diff crates that are similar, yet different enough for diff moods. So a song like "Come and talk to me" could fit into my regular 90's Warm up tracks, my Upbeat Wedding reception tracks, End of the night "last song" crate, and even my Slow grind crate....Take you down and motivation would be in my slow grind....Some cut would only fit in slow grind....Crush on you would fit in 90's warm up and the last song crate...Isley "Between the sheets" would fit in the Slow grind and Last song crate...etc. etc. etc. So they all overlap.

So yea, the BPM alone puts "Some cut" into some sets that aren't at all ratch, and it won't sound out of place if it's with the right crowd.

I too feel like the best party songs are between 92-104. After that its like a dead man's zone from 107 through 120 unless you're playing old school. And honestly, I'll put on Billie Jean and watch the crowd go crazy, but haven't we all heard the Mike Jack singles enough times in our lives?

Like many DJ's with nights at clubs where you have to mix the hip hop with the EDM and house, I have started using transitions to expedite things. But I HATE transitions, it feels like fake DJing.

ALL THAT SAID, I give tons of props to LA DJs and I'd love to come see you spin. I am the Friday resident at Boulevard3 on the Sunset Strip. Wreckingeyez and I hold down every weekend there. You are for sure invited (in fact, any DJ with the night off and in LA is invited to the mini-Vegas party we put on there every weekend).

Still loving "Pop That" and happy French finally got some love over here (I started my DJ career on the East Coast over a decade ago, so I still got love for NYC cats getting play outside the Tri-State). Wanted to ask yall about how you handle all the YMCMB type tracks. I am a fan of the beats and the hard hitting bass, but they're ALL really starting to sound the same with different lyrics. What do you all do; what songs do you play to get those ymcmb bangers in while keeping it fresh and breaking up the monotony. I agree, you have to throw those songs on at some point. I've found that earlier on in the night you play a mix of more up beat danceable songs, then later on in the night once everyone got their buzz on, throw on the 65 - 70 bpm stuff and just let them ride for a bit. I'm doing a club this weekend and the lady whose birthday it is asked if I could fit some Old School Hip Hop/rnb, Reggae, Down south and new ish., plus a couple edm tracks. I'm just trying to make sure I got all my bases covered.
