When I record my vinyl it leaves me quite disappointed with the results. Im not sure what Im doing wrong but the whole recording sounds muddy and its nowhere near loud enough. The needles are good, the weight is correct, the vinyl is clean...turning up the gain just causes it to clip..

Any help?

I don´t think this can be helped man! I felt the same way... however I´ve found that when you import them into serato, the autogain feature brings them up and they sound great (my last gig on a wickid system: I swear you couldn´t tell whether they were ripped from a cd or record!). What I do is make sure when recording that they´re all meters are top yellow and below the red on the gain... after like I said Serato´s autogain will do the rest for you.

We have an article that could help a bit. Check it out -->> Archiving Vinyl Techniques -->> www.scratchlive.net

Cheers for the article but it hasnt helped at all.

I played out this afternoon and the two tracks that I recorded sounded completely awful. The bass was none-existant and the vocals sounded so muddy you could barely make out the words. This was a track that sounds so crisp and bright when playing it, it made such a difference, just bought the mood plummeting down.

The other track was a DnB track and there was literally no sub bass at all.

Im confused by that diagram. It shows the mixer being before the sl1 unit in the signal path. Is this correct? I thought the SL1 worked as a preamp? If not then this might be where Im going wrong.

Defies the point of recording it into Serato then really doesnt it? If you have to swap the mixer and the sl1 round whenever you want to record vinyl?

The SL1 doesn't have very good phono preamps and wasn't designed for recording vinyl, most of the RIAA equalization is done in the software IIRC. That is why the diagram shows it going turntable->mixer->SL1 as you should use an external preamp to boost the signal to line level. But using a mixer as a preamp isn't a good idea either cause then you have to worry about double EQ'ing, setting multiple levels (gain, fader, master, etc). Best is to use an external self contained phono preamp.

Then there's also a bug in 1.8.1 where the software RIAA curve wasn't being applied. This is most likely why your recordings don't have any bass. You have to go into the setup menu and select line input then phono (or visa versa) input again to fix it. This should be fixed with 1.8.2 though.

thats what i do is record into acid pro and then convert the files to mp3. then i go back and deleat the og wave file so it doesnt take up so much space. works well it just takes a while to record everything.
