Hi,

I'm thinking about buying a dongle for my laptop and subscribing to a mobile internet service in order to be able to download from iTunes while I'm out at a gig.

Obviously DJ's can't have every single song in the whole world but hey it'd be nice to!! So I thought that by having an internet connection at the gigs I could never miss a request.

Firstly... If I'm using SSL on my powerbook and running the internet to download via iTunes will it kill SSL?

Secondly... Whats the best way to get access to a newly downloaded song during the gig? As in while SSL is being used and download is happening in the back ground how can I bring that MP3 into SSL and play it as the next track or in a couple of trcks time?

Anyone tried it? Or know what'll happen?

Hello chris,

Your going to be at the mercy of your computer when it comes to doing this.
I'm going to guess if your using a Powerbook you will have issues with dropouts when accessing the wireless internet.

Try it out though.. you might find that its ok.

You can also try boosting your usb audio buffer to give your computer some more juice.
Of course this will affect latency and you might notice a slower response time when scratching.

You might be able to boost the buffer while using the airport card.
Once you've downloaded and imported the track into SSL you could turn off the airport card and lower the usb audio buffer again.

Just import it like you normally would.

Hope that helps;)

Thanks!

Ok.... if I had a second Mac of PC on the go and used the internet on this would I be able to import a track whilst SSL is playing?? Is this a problem??

Also... can I import and CD whilst SSL is playing? I use iTunes and SSL imports my playlists.

Thanks

You probably won't have any issues importing music into SSL off of a flash drive or external drive. Ripping music off of a cd while playing SSL will probably cause dropout issues.
Just try it out.

Will the flash drive work using the iTunes method? Importing the library playlist whilst using SSL??

Thanks

You can play an audio CD without ripping it!

At home, my songs are not on my laptop but on my other PC, both are connected via WiFi through a router, everything works fine with very low USB latency (at least with my Core2Duo laptop). But I wouldn't do this at a gig ;)

Just... try!

You can have iTunes read your library off of a flash drive but I would not recommend it.
Just import your music into SSL from the drive.

Every application, service, or process you have running on your computer uses resources.. CPU cycles, memory (real and virtual). As Zach S says.. try it and see how it works for your setup. I have run SSL while online with wireless on my laptop, been having chat conversations, with AVG AntiVirus running, AT HOME.. and its worked fine. I would never run the risk of an issue while getting paid to DJ! When I DJ the **ONLY** applications running on my laptop are SSL and Excel (I keep a running set list as I DJ). My laptop is not particularly powerful but it is something more than minimum specs.

Again.. see what works for you.. but I'd rather say "I'm sorry, that song doens't happen to be one of the 50,000 I have with me" than have a problem.
