if you choose a FAT 32 frmat you can use it on both PC and Mac. Mac's have a known "slow load time" issue with fat 32 but you are mainly concerned with PC it seems. At least this way if a buddy has a Mac, you can read and write with your external.

FAT is not a brand... its a type of file system... I got a Dell system... and I am using a 1 terabyte drive from Lacie... no issues ever... knock on wood

Note: you may not be able to write with a mac to an NTFS drive, but it reads just fine. We did a gig a couple of weeks ago and plugged our NTFS external into a Powerbook that was already there--had no problems. You can't save stuff, but who cares if you're just playing.
