1333 mhz memory in a 1600mhz MacBook Pro, is it possible?

Hi Guys.
I upgraded my late 2011 i7 2.4ghz quad core 17" mbp from 2x4GB ram to 2x8GB.
These are 1333mhz. Using this machine for video work.

Now considering getting a new base model 15" mbp, i7 2,3 GHz 2,3 GHz, 2x2GB Ram for DJ work.
(replacing a non unibody 15" penryn machine) The new models are 1600 mhz.

1. Would I be able to install the 2x4GB 1330 mhz sticks that came in my 17"
into the new 15" 1600mhz machine?

2. If so, would I see a substantial performance drop?

Considering doing this, then I could always buy 2x8GB, 1600mhz for the 15" later right?
Anyone with an insight, please share your knowledge.

Thanks, Warp.

If I remember correctly, you absolutely can use the 1333 sticks in your new machine, you just can't MIX the two. So you can either use 1333 OR 1600, not both.

As far as a performance for Serato/etc, I don't think you'd notice much of a performance difference between the two speeds.

But yes, you can install up to 16GB of RAM in any of the newer MBP models.

Cool, thanks!
As I said I did put 16GB into my 17" mbp (for graphics work), works great.
I have the original stock 4x4=8GB sticks laying around.

Will probably get the base 15" then (4GB Stock), install the 8GB from the 17",
then later buy 16GB for 15"and a 512 SSD, once prices comes down.

Just throwing out there, in case you haven't looked at real-world RAM pricing lately, that 2x4gb 1600Mhz RAM will be pretty cheap. $55 at OWC/Macsales, most likely a bit cheaper at a local computer store.

eshop.macsales.com

Not sure $55 or less in savings is really worth compromising the performance of a brand new $1800 laptop.

Maybe better to buy a 15" MBP refurb that actually uses 1333Mhz ram?

...and you can run Snow Leopard on that.

Thanks Mark, still a little undecided if I should get the 1GB Video Ram 2,6 ghz model instead.
> store.apple.com - Either way, when buying ram for the new machine, I'll cop 16GB, no doubt...

BTW, i asked the video guys for some advice over here > serato.com

Refurbs are kind of hard to get in my part of the world, not gonna order them from overseas.
I need a norwegian keybard ;-)

My 17" 10.7.4 mbp does run SSL nicely, waveforms are a little choppy, but I would expect serato to fix that issue, although it'll probably take some time... ;)
