Since getting my new laptop, I have had trouble with some videos not fitting the screen properly. Many are smaller than, or offset from, the screen with a bright green color filling the gap. Some others come in over-scanned and some of the video is cut off.
I have tried every possible video resolution and setting and changed projectors several times to no avail. I have noticed the the problem is more frequent on lower resolution videos (360p, 480p) than HD videos. There is no consistency to it. Some videos that won't work one minute will work later; and the source of the video (HandBrake, VidDisc, Vegas Pro) seems to make no difference.
For what it's worth, I have a Toshiba Qosmio X775 with a NVIDIA GeFroce GTX 560M video card using VGA.

I have also tried every release of Video-SL and that has made no difference.

Hi Pete Moss,
Generally speaking this is due to missing video codecs. Have you installed the recommended video codecs for using Video-SL on a Windows laptop using DirectShow ?
We recommend using both of the following codecs for DirectShow for use with Video-SL:
* FFDShow www.free-codecs.com
* Haali Media Splitter (MatroskaSplitter) haali.su
Use the defaults when installing.
Note: If no codec is found, then QuickTime will be used to decode the video.
There are also two codec packages on this link that may help; ninite.com
The K-Lite and CCCP codec packages.
Video-SL scales its performance based on the graphics card that is installed on your laptop.
There is a registry script that we have created that will Force QuickTime or Force Directshow to be used as the default decoder on your laptop which can be found here;
"How can I use QuickTime as the default decoder for Video-SL on Windows?"
Link: sera.to
Try these couple of tweaks and let me know if the performance improves and if you have any further questions regaring Video-SL.

I have installed both the FFDShow and Haali Media Splitter. I have also used the force scripts with no success.

Hi Pete Moss,
Could you try the other two codec packages and let me know if this helps. It may be the YUV setting if your are using QuickTime to decode.
Which version of QuickTime is installed on your laptop ?
Check that the graphics card settings are set for high performance.

Hi Pete Moss,
OK, there may be one other setting that may resolve this issue. Can you tell me after using the registry scripts which decoder are you using now, QuickTime or Directshow ?
Do you have MovieInfoBtach installed on your laptop ?
Download MovieInfoBatch from here; sera.to
Once you have installed MovieInfoBtach open the app and tick the 'Use Debug Panel' check box.
Now open Scratch Live and the Video-SL Plug-in you should now see the Debug panel next to the Video-SL plug-in. There you will find a setting for YUV color space, try changing the setting here and test performance.
Is it the same videos that are showing the green borders ?

I will try to install and run that this week sometime.
As for which videos do it, it can happen with any video. The strange thing is the fact that sometimes it will and sometimes it won't.

I had this same issue, the color space tweak fixed it. Also, I found that I had to use the force scripts to get windows 7 to use FFDSHOW, it was defaulting to the windows built in codecs that were causing troubles. There is a codec tweak tool that you can use to see what codecs the system is defaulting to, I used this to sort it all out.

One more thing, the 64bit version of FFDSHOW did not work correctly on my system. I uninstalled the 64bit and am using the 32bit with no trouble.

I just reread your post, the 32bit of FFDSHOW and forcing the codec fixed the offset video problem, I was having the same issue with that too

Thanks for the advice, DJ Sound Technique. I'll give that a shot. It shouldn't be necessary to do this ourselves, but I'll try to figure it out.

Well, I did what you said with partial success, Instead of green, I only get black; but they're still not all fitting properly.

Have you grabbed the most current version of the nvida driver from their site? I did that too, and also, when you are playing a video in Serato, do you see the FFDSHOW icons in the task bar?

Have you tried to force quicktime? I narrowed down the issue to something with FFDSHOW because I did not have the fit issue when I forced Quicktime.

I had the same problems and solved it with CCCP codec pack... Here serato.com is a tweak for FFDshow wich worked for me too but the videos are resized with 4:3 aspect ratio so you will probably get distorted output with 16:9 material...

I had the exact same problem. When i posted it though (even posted a video with the problem) I didnt get nearly this much help. :( Kinda wish i did.
Anyway I was able to fix the problem, and it was much easier than I expected.
I went down to my local Future Shop (BestBuy for the american's) and bought a Mac Book Pro. Never had a single problem since then. :)

Cause they don't know how to tweak it. If you know the in's & out's of serato/vsl then your fine.

I am a very VERY advanced PC users and after 6 months of trying, tweeking Bios's settings, video card drives and every codec listed on this site and a whole bunch that are not. I still could not get VSL to work as well as Video on VDJ dose. And on a PC VDJ does video very well. I hate mac's. and almost all of the problems Mac people have is user error, not hardware or software, and a few are just because they run an older mac. I only have experience with my newish (early 2011 MBP). Again. Just so im clear. Mac's are the DEVIL (love Happy Gilmore). But sometimes you got to sleep with the devil to get what you need. and a stable video experience that i never have to worry about well at a show. Thats something I think is worth sleeping with the devil for.

personally i think scratchlive started getting buggy when they came out with the version that was only compatible with SL2 & SL4. It started with the gain fucking up and then scratchlive not being able to calibrate with that version plus the added corruption issues. It was just a damn headache on pc & mac. I know for a fact that version is worthless because I'm still running SL1 and haven't had any of those issues cause Im still using 2.2.0

I run an SL4 and CDJ-2000's in HID Mode so for me running the newest version has always been the best bet. I couldnt even go that far back if i wanted too because i would loose support for both products.
