Serato Crashing Running Vidoes from my External HDD

3 out of my last 5 gigs with a packed club, Scratch Live has crashed on me. I am running Mix Emergency for my videos using a Seagate FreeAgent 1tb drive with Firewire. Previously I was using a 500gb Lacie Rugged Hard Drive with Firewire and never had a crash. It leads to believe it could be the hard drive causing this? I don't get a notification that my drive has been disconnected or anything though. One important thing to note is that I do usually only have about 6 to 10 gigs of free space on my hard drive at any given time. I never have crashes when I am running audio only from the internal drive.

When it crashes...the audio just dies out. The track continues to spin on my deck until it appears the "buffer" of 15 seconds has run out...then the track waveforms just disappear. Then it just stops responding. If i load in a track off of my internal HDD, nothing happens. If I try restarting Serato, it re-crashes immediately and won't open. I HAVE TO RE-BOOT my Macbook Pro to get Scratch Live to work properly again.

Mix Emergency pushes the limits of my MBP - but I am confident this isn't the main issue causing the crashes as Mix Emergency has warnings that pop up if I need to be concerned with anything.

I also cut and paste my Crash report at the bottom of this.

Before I go and buy a 1tb Lacie Ruggd or another hard drive, I wanted to try to get some insight on what might be causing this? Thanks so much everyone!

Hi DJ Kor,

Sorry to hear your having issues with your setup. From what you have described it does sound like an issue with the hard drive rather than the software at this stage.

It is recommended that you don't run your drive with less than 10-15% of free space.

Also, ME is a third party application and you will need to contact them in regards to any problem that there software is causing.

I suggest re formatting that drive MAC OS Journaled and NOT running it without any free space. Let me know how you get on and we'll take it from there.

Thank you. The hard drive space (or lack of) was on my internal, which I increased. My external hard drive has plenty of free space. Again, I don't think ME had anything to do with it...I was just hoping that based on my crash report you could help me identify the issue.

I am re-formatting my HDD as we speak - so thank you for that advice!

Side note, I have VSL as well, but I haven't been able to figure out a way to correct video delay on it. Which is why I use ME.

I ran VSL with my original hard drive for two shows with no crashes, then peak hour on Saturday it did it again. The music cuts out. The buffer "wave forms" play out and then Serato freezes up.

I have to restart my computer and everything works fine again.

I am wondering if it could be my firewire port? I've had the problem with 2 external different hard drives (both firewire bus powered) and using both VSL and Mix Emergency.

or

Could it be a corrupt database of some sort?

My computer seems to be able to handle the graphics load, etc no problem.

Any ideas?

What spec is your laptop?

For both decks to lock up does suggest the drive is a possibility, although I haven't really heard of FireWire ports going bad.

Did you reformat that drive to MacOS Extended as suggested?

Yes, I did reformat to MacOS extended as suggested on my external.

An interesting new development just occurred - last night my Scratch Live did the exact same thing again, "crashing", except this time I was only playing MP3s off of my INTERNAL drive. I haven't had a Serato crash using MP3's since the last time I updated both my TTM 57 hardware and SL at the same time.

This makes me wonder if I am having some issues with....

I would be trying 2.3.3. and not 2.2 it had issues.
You may want to try and back down to 1.9.2 just to test.
also make sure the 57sl's firmware is updated. Are you getting the USB light yellow and red?
Maybe try running your MBP in 32bit mode.
to run in 32 bit mode hold "3" and "2" down well starting up.

Also what OS are you running? I hope your still on 10.6.8 Snow leopard. and not lion.

Hey Man,

It's a 15" without a dedicated video.

But last night I had the exact same type of crash using only MP3's on an internal drive.

I am wiping my MBP as we speak, reinstalling and going back down to SL 1.9.2 and crossing my fingers.

If I get another crash with a perfectly clean MBP I think I can narrow it down to maybe a corrupt database, something f'd up in my MBP, or maybe even something going on with my TTM 57.

I'm dumbfounded....and so close to buying a new MBP, but trying to avoid needing to do that. It's frustrating investing in the "best" gear and looking like an amateur DJ peak hour of the night when you crash.

you computer has a 64 bit processor. but it can run in 332 bit mode. lots of older software was/ is still programmed in 32 bit mode.... the details are really geeky. google it if you like.

I had a similar problem with my external hard drive I switched the connection from firewire to usb and haven't had a problem since. Realistically usb deals with smaller files easily unless your loading an entire movie it shouldn't be much slower.

I would start with rebuilding your database V2 file first; sera.to

I would also recommend updating to Scratch Live 2.3.3 as this has resolved a number of issues regarding video files.

Scratch Live is a 32bit application but also runs fine in 64bit.

as a precaution though when you upgrade to Scratch live 2.3.3 the meta data is unique to 2.3.3 and you will not be able to play those files with a previous version of Scratch Live.
