Currently there is a tool called Itch Sync that can build your crates exactly as your folder structure .
For users who organize their music in this fashion, it's beautiful. Tag your tracks, move them into their respective folders and run the tool.
Launch SSL or Itch and click analyze, done. After that set your cue points, etc, etc.
Beautiful!
If this could be accomplished directly in SSL & Itch with folder exclusion capability that would be great. It could check against changes and do incremental changes instead of importing the whole structure everytime.
That would eliminate having to do this externally to SSL/Itch because you need to shutdown, then run the tool. Launch the application, run analysis then continue.
It could even be setup to run analysis after the import is completed.

I wish I could just get the dang thing to work......... I say ditch the whole crate crap and just use folders like every other DVS on the market......... And if there not going to do that then +1 on them building a tool for us.

I can help too if you need. It can't load/find the itch-sync.properties file, which usually means it's either a) not in the same folder/directory as the main .jar program file, b) didn't name the file correctly, or c) not in the correct format.

Thanks to Quartz for the help. I got it working. What I had to do was the folder I made when I unzipped the download and made the properties file had to all be moved to my desktop. I had to take everything out of the folder the creator said to make and place it all on my desktop. After that everything worked just great!!

No problem, glad you got it working.
When I set it up I put all the files in it's own folder in a folder on my system drive and created a shortcut to the executable on my desktop.
Worked from day one.

Using a folder/hierarchy is very limited. The benefit of crate structures is it allows one to map one track to multiple crates which can't be achieved with folders (unless you do file copies or make symbolic links).
I've added to the list being accumulated in serato.com the idea that a hierarchy of smart crates could map to a directory structure. This would then achieve what you are after.
For the time being, I think nik39's Scratch Tools is able to create an SSL library based on directory structure.

You can still have the same track in multiple crates if you wish by adding them inside SSL. But for your based structure and organization it's much faster to use the folder structure.
That way you can dump new tracks in their respective folder, run Itch Sync, launch SSL and click analyze.
In three steps you can add many new tracks to the database.
Itch Sync and Scratch Tools can create crates from the folder structure but Itch Sync is much easier to use because it's not command line based.

^^ I agree with this statement ^^
Haven't taken the time to read the whole thread but I say dump this crate stuff, its a pain. I organize my tracks in the folders anyways so having to go into Serato and retype the folders and names then find my tracks in the folders then select and add them just sucks. Thank goodness for Itch Sync, lol!!

That being said I wouldn't mind having about Tab options for crate views.
My All view would show all my crates
My Battle view would just show the crates I setup for performances
...and so on
That would make for a cleaner view when needed

I recently just started fooling around in virtual dj and i really agree with scrapping the whole crate function, because if you have too many crates it takes forever to open. Is it possible to add a function similar to virtual dj to where you can add a favorites function to be able to add maybe your entire music folder to the left side of your screen where your crates are currently located. to me seems that the crates utilize allot of your system memory. Just a thought.
