Ok so I have SMC fancontrol installed but when I'm doing my videos my MBP (13" early 2011 lower model edition) heats up to 80 degrees when I have the fan running at 6000rpms. Is there something I'm missing? It's my first MBP and it worries me that it gets that hot and stays that hot for 5-6 hours during my gigs. Cooling pads won't help because it's draining power from the usb and the computer is aluminum with no heat exhaust on the bottom like PCs. It's on the back of the MBP and when the lid is open it pretty much blocks it. Are these MBP's built to withstand that kind of heat constantly? Do I have a bad apple? What does everyone else's MBP heat up to while doing videos for a long gig?

I also upgraded to 8gig ram recently. Problem with heating issues started before that though.

I do video with the same model and I get no temperature problems at all. I would definitely get Apple to have a look at your laptop.

Hey Abell,

That doesn't sound quite right, 80 degrees is quite hot! Can you let me know what the CPU level is like when its heating up this much?

Hi i have a mbp 15inch 2.2 i 7 4gb ram and my macbook gets hot aswell i would say its cause of the high cpu usage and mine doesn't charge while using sl aswell because of the new batts in the pro intelligent charging :-) i use smc fan control and up the fan speed to like 5000rpm to keep it a bit cooler its still around 50 ish with that :-)

But just thinking about it i would prob say its the grafix card thats getting hot playing videos :-) because with just ssl its charges and doesnt get that hot either :-)

yeah, that's my guess too... cuz runnin audio alone the macbook stays cool, but runnin video it gets hot in the left corner under the screen. im usin Mix Emergency.

Exactly, same here. So should I take it to apple set up my Serato real quick and have them see the temp rise? And how can I monitor my CPU usage when having SSL & MixEmergency running?

Also, I have AverMediaQuickPlay adapter plugged in when doing my video sets that is usb powered.

You can monitor this using Activity Monitor. This can be found on your computer here:

HD > Applications > Utilities > Activity Monitor

Any results from apple with ur heat issue? I installed smc fan control and run both fans at 5000 rpm... Its alot cooler but still pretty toasty inside my macbook.
Abell 6:26 PM - 7 January, 2012
No results really, I mean there's so much crap being powered through my computer (external hd, power supply, aver media player thats usb powered, sl1 thats usb powered) that is going to get hot regardless.
