Suddenly computer being very slow and audio choppy

I bought serato last week and when I installed it my computer displayed an error message saying this program could potentially harm your system. After reading through the manual it told me to click 'continue anyway' so I did.
Anyway, all was fine after installing, and I did a practice set up with all the hardware connected and it worked just fine. So I have been busy ripping my CD collection to mp3 (on an external hard drive) and importing it to Serato. Then yesterday I started up my laptop and it seemed unusually slow. I then opened serato in offline mode and (after taking ages to load up) the audio was very choppy. In task manager it seems the cpu is being used completely.I thought I might need extra RAM, but it worked fine before? My processor meets the min spec (just)
It has baffled me but I hope you could shed some light. I was looking forward to my first gig with it next week!
My specs are: XP, Intel celeron m 1.6ghz, 504mb ram

Your computer is below the minimum system requirements :(

How much drive space do you have remaining on your internal and external drive (if used)?

I have 17gb on the internal and about 230gb on the external.
Would upgrading ram help at all?

More ram will help to take some of the load off of your processor which is probably getting taxed hard.

Try to get bump your ram up to around 2GB, if possible.

Try this:

Close SSL

Open the Windows Start menu.

Open your User Music

Open the ScratchLIVE folder

Locate and rename the History folder to Old_History

Locate and Rename the databaseV2 file to Old_databaseV2

Restart SSL and allow the library to load (it may take a while as SSL rebuilds the databaseV2 file)

After SSL finishes loading, retest your system

Any luck?

It worked ok for a bit then went back to being jerky. I just dont understand why it worked fine before? Would more ram really work or is it time for a new machine?!

Honestly, a single core 1.6gHZ processor is suuuuper slow compared to the dual core beasties coming out now.

More RAM will help a bit, but it's more of a band-aid than a solid fix.

Ok thanks I think I know what I have to do!
