VSL version: 1.1.1
USB buffer: all the way to the left
Display: 60 seconds screen and audio


I have used this set-up for months and have had one small issue happen once (video froze) Updating my VSL version has solved this issue.

This is a known rock-solid set-up. I have nothing else on this partition except for the Traktor X1 controller software and the OS X. And my music/videos.

The videos came from a DJ music service that I subscribe to - they do a one time trial of videos and I signed up for that. I don't know what they were encoded with.

I set my buffer to 2 gb last night and it didn't have any effect.

There are 300gb plus available of my hard drive.

Chad, there was a program that you guys have that would show the frame rates of the video file...do you have a link for that? (just in case)

I might also download Haandbrake and the preset from the link below. Convert a couple vids using the preset and see if that helps playback for them.

The keyframes (average) of the videos seem way to large for me. You usually do not want then over 20.

Also, what's up with your framerate? What company did you download these from?

Try using the handbrake presets and encode one of your own using the presets you will find there.

The frame rate looks more problematic than anything. My guess is that the 25fps videos play ok and the 23.98(24)fps files don't. If I remember correctly Quicktime doesn't read those files very well. So where ever they came from...there is a bad encode on them. They're typically going to be either 25 or 29.97, PAL or NTSC. Some times for older videos you may see 14.985 for NTSC videos.
I've encoded some files with the correct frame rate and key frames every 150+ and they still play in VSL. I redid them after I found out what I did wrong, but still...check the frame rate. You can try to download Perian and see if it will help Quicktime with reading it.

Does anyone use a Queue Manager for Handbrake? I have 200 plus videos right now and I can see it being very cumbersome to click each one!

A video that's at 23.98 or 24FPS has either been properly reverse-telecined, or was directly converted at the native rate of the film source.

For example, almost all of the current stuff that Smashvidz posts is 23.98FPS.

Awesome to hear. There is a queue in handbrake. When you load the "source" you can then hit "Add to Queue" button.

On the handbrake article I linked you to, there is a pictorial demonstration of that process.

We were just talking about a mac the ripper program earlier. I think it would do what you are asking. We are looking into buying a copy to test.

I've scanned through it a few times. Got lost in the Windows stuff, and I don't have Compressor yet. Working with Adobe Master Suite right now and still saving up the big bucks for FC.

Make sure your Output Quality setting is on MEDIUM, Not BEST, For some reason once I installed the new version it set the default to Best, once I dropped it back down to medium it is back to normal
