DJ hero controller as a midi controller for SSL?

When the wii first came out some people were using them as midi controllers to do FX and VJing. Now that we have a simi DJ like interface, I'm wondering if anyone has tried to use a DJ hero controller with SSL. It would have to be the wii because its bluetooth, not the xbox or ps3. If someone has the equipment, wants to try this out, and post about the results it would be helpful. One of my CD decks went down and I need a way to replace it on the cheap.
What you would need:
Bluetooth on your computer with SSL or a USB-bluetooth adapter (10$)
Wiimote (about 40$)
Wii DJ hero controller, not the game (maybe 50$ ?)
Bluetooth to midi software (free) ((google it Bi&@#es))
knowledge of computers and critical thinking skills.
Itch seems pretty cool to me, but these controllers are dirt cheap. They have the platter to move and you could map a button to switch from CDJ to scratch or even jog. They have a slider for pitch shift. You can map play/pause, cue, and probably loop in and out to any of the open buttons. And you wouldnt need track up and down.

why not? what problems? I don't understand.
If you are talking about to many DJs, having 4000$ to drop on a pair of CDJ-2000 doesnt make you a great DJ. If DJ homeless bum can pump a party better than me, then I don't have a problem with it. If you want to play "the game" you gotta step it up.

I can see it now.
Some kid is buggin me at a gig because he's seen some DJ using a DJ Hero controller to spin with Scratch Live. Now he swears that he can DJ because he has the game. The second I turn my back he's trying to bust a move on my Techs and fucks something up.

what it all boils down to is professionalism, if you spin in your room great do this but if your getting paid to do a job be a professional and show up with some sort of professional equipment not a childs toy. If you hired someone to build you a house and they showed up with a bob the builders my 1st tool set and a tonka truck youd flip out, or if you went to the Dr and they had an operation game laying on the table so they could practice, your marganilizing what professional DJs do and bring down the value in the eyes of the consumers

I understand that there is a difference in what a profession brings and the local frat house party. But you are always going to have DJ software that is basically free once someone cracks it and puts it up for bit torrents. You cant stop the DJ winamps. They will always be there.
I think its a matter of know these people are in the amatuer DJ class. But if you know they aren't pros, they why dog on it.

because i think theres a difference between taking something like winamp which almost everyone knows what it is and what your doing on it and playing to a crowd and taking high quality professional software that is used to by real pros and cheapening it by controlling it with a childs toy. Also why on eart would someone drop 500+ on the SL1 or 3 or whatever then dumb it down with a DJ hero controller, i mean if you want to go that route it would be cheaper and simplier just to get a regular midicontroller that was made for what your asking for

using violence is a great way to get your ass taken to court and lose your business investment. I'm guessing you would probably loss your skills too. Its not very professional. When are people going to learn being a keyboard warrior isnt cool.
here is the deal. SSL is just 2 USB soundcards glued together. Its a great product. I love this shit out of mine, but there are a dozen other clones out there with similar products. You can bootleg software like PCDJ and get 2 soundcards and you have the same thing.
I bought mine like a month or 2 after they came out. I knew what it was, but I was paying for the support, service, and name. The itch midi controllers are not that much different from these "toy" controllers. Slap a Rane logo on it and half of your F'er would go out and buy 4 of them.
I want to do this just because I need a cheap replacement deck. I dont want to buy numark or stanton. I think it would be cool to just use a DJ hero controller just for the hell of it. Its more of a shits and giggles sort of thing. I just play for fun. I don't play out for cash. I'm not taking money out of anyones pocket, and I don't want to spend a lot more on my hobby.

On paper it sounds good. However why would you open up bluetooth on your machine. Not only would it eat CPU cycles your creating another point of failure. DJ hero controller is used for casual playing at home (which is a stable environment). Not at a club, frat party. If you want to try something that might be cheap give this a try.

I beg to differ. The ITCH controllers have tons of buttons and knobs on them for performance control. The DJ Hero controller has a scratch sensor (being generous here), 3 buttons, a crossfader, and an effects dial. Trying to control SSL with a DJ Hero controller, while it might be possible, strikes me as an exercise in stupidity given how limited it is as an actual control source. If you want a cheap MIDI controller to help enhance your performance with SSL, one of the Korg Nano series controllers would be a FAR smarter choice.

I would rather give away a 1200 to someone who needs a 3rd deck for emergencies before i ever see someone doing this. if its just a hobby then I'm sorry but with all due respect just use ipods. For some people this is not just a fun lil hobby to make a mockery of. For some of us it is a real career. For some of us it has a history and a following. To 90 percent of us that even remotely take this seriously seeing a vid of some jackass as scratching on ssl with a plastic dj hero remote will be a lot like watching a 3 legged dog try to run.... its kinda funny but its just a damn shame and you really wish you could make it so it could actually run right.

You could say the same with poker and video games. For some people it's a hobby. For others it's a career. I still don't see why you can't have fun with it.

Putting aside the "because you can" element that would make this a mildly entertaining for a nanosecond Youtube clip - there are better, cheaper and more effective options that will work just by plugging it into the USB port and that will stop you receiving a beatdown from not only DJs but probably the club owner, promoter, security and crowd.

Well i get all the "pro" cracks on here, but I've been djing from hard core raves to friends apartments for 15 years and it's tough to explain why there still isn't a single controller, with the feel of at least one deck, a crossfader, eqs, and some sick touch screen sample capabilities, all based on your iTunes or mp3 library of choice. Viva the iSlate, where maybe you can use your digits along with a simple "Dj hero like controller" to rock serato, ableton, and some sick sample device...at once...then we can stick to rockin the party :)

Btw, Im not usually into defending newbies, but for what it's worth, I really think the biz could use some slack on people trying to be creative...you know that sooner or later someone is going to show up, like Hendrix or Jack White with his first busted guitar, only some cheap ass mod controller an busted iPhone, and rock your pro DJ self back to the drawing board...that potential is what keeps me practicing!

I wouldn't ever try this, but I'm not gonna knock him for wanting to fuck around with something at home for a hobby. There are people who do live music shows with gameboys for fucks sake. And people pay to go see them do it, if he wants to make a dj hero controller a midi device let em.

Controllerism is a niche market but its still a market and I wouldnt be suprised if there was money to be made somewhere in this idea.

id love for a DJ any of you look up to to play a set that is just out of this world, something that just blows you guys out of the water. only later he reveals that he did it all with a dj hero controler, a walkman, and an iphone 1st gen. sure he can use the best equipment, but i think all that matters in the end is how good the music and mixing is when its done. It kind f reminds me of the end of the movie "Accepted", you guys can stick to your "Industry Standard" equipment and stuff, but why does the home, begginer, inovated DJ have to conform to what you guys know as "Right"? Haters Gonna Hate, but dont let em get you down, do your thing.
I now refer you to two things....
I'm a big fan of Skrillex, he makes great music and puts on a great show. He does it all with his laptop and a 16 pad controller. "OH NO HES A BAD PERFORMER!!! HES NOT EVEN USING TURNTABLES!!!" so what? hes putting on a good show nonetheless.

Why is there so much hate on these forums? are there no nice people here?

one
don't know why after a year this thread has come to llife...
two
I don't care if you are rocking two gerbils and a falcon. If the set is hot it's hot.
However,
using an M-audio controller is completerly different than using a DJ hero controller.
one is made for music making
the other is made for my 12 year old daughter to think she is the reincarnation of dj shortee.
great proof of concept. throw that shit on youtube...with enough hits he'll be the video of the week on tosh.0 or attack of the show.

When that happens then we'll see, but most likely that will never happen. I'd love to do and see a lot of things but I live in the here and now.

Mate, I have no idea if you can do this. Have you ever touched one of those controllers? they might not be so sturdy.
I'm gathering you need something to replace your cdj for practicing mixing at home? Seeing as you never said you were going to use it at a gig.
Looks like Scotty Doo has hooked up the mixer which isn't what you're after but he might have the tt going soon.
Can't say I'm ever going to want this myself but I like seeing people mess with this stuff too and looking forward to seeing if it works at all.
A couple of years ago I mapped my wiimote to logic and messed with that for a few minutes! it kinda sucked but I still thought it was cool to be able to do it. You might feel the same way about this when you hook it up though.. be like this feels like shit so fuck it.

I want to do this just because I need a cheap replacement deck. I dont want to buy numark or stanton. I think it would be cool to just use a DJ hero controller just for the hell of it. Its more of a shits and giggles sort of thing. I just play for fun. I don't play out for cash. I'm not taking money out of anyones pocket, and I don't want to spend a lot more on my hobby.
ha I missed this post man sorry and looks like alot of others missed it too. Look I see where your comin from!
A few weeks ago I didn't have my tt's and needed to get some practice in and decided to just hook up the MPK to the macbook and mess with it like that.
I hated it but was slightly better than using the trackpad/keyboard.

main job for a "club dj" is to keep the girls dancing and to keep people feeling good and drinking.. they mix and push buttons.. and sometimes talk.. bottom line.
if a dj is using a $2000 serato controller.. or a $30 dj hero controller.. if they got your club crackin, than your not trippin..
of course this is just a toy.. and its fun as hell djing with it.. and its fully capable as a performance controller..
so, as i am a dj, im playing out today, with my new slick dj hero controller, im gonna tear shit up, and you can go run your club that you spent way too much money on your soon to be obsolete dj gear..

@scotty doo
any sane club manager wont see DJ Hero controller as a profesional DJ setup , dude if you use it at a club , you will never be as the same level as the real profesional DJ , have you ever see diplo rocked 3000 people with a DJ hero Controller ? he rocked 3000+ People at my club with a TTM57SL and a pair of Technis 1200, see thats why im booking Diplo,Aoki,Glenn Morrison, and shit load of other profesional DJ that use profesional tools , and not you hahahahahahahahahahaha
cmon seriously , do you want people to think you seriously , say yes youve played "in a club" with your DJ Hero set up , is the club your playing is an international super club with 8 areas and won several awards and the busiest club in your town ?
and yes a DJ mainjob is to rock the night, but not with a toy too , its a club dude , cmon , just be serious hahahahahahahhahaha i cant believe that you actually use that setup in a club (im actually laughing out loud)
and if you think 2x CDJ2000 , 2 X technics mk5 and a Rane68 installed at every booth is obselete , well you my good sir , has insulted this very own forum this mixer is based
no seriusly ? duuuuude hahahahahahaha

wow.. haters.. its a freakin dj hero controller, how serious do think i am about it haha, of course its a toy.. just sayin. it works..
i take that back about expensive gear, i always appreciate a club with a dj friendly setup, 57sl, djm800, 1200's, is standard.. i go with the 05pro.. and nuff respect to the top djs breaking ground with the latest gear, aoki, diplo, craze, shiftee, atrak.. we seen the videos
could you pull off a set like craze's traktor promo with a dj hero mixer.. no of course freakin not.. of course you wouldnt use it if your getting paid $1,000's for a set..
im nowhere near the level of those guys, never said i would ever be..
so anyways, i did a set with it this past weekend at a skate jam.. it sucks as a mixer.. i used traktor, mapped a bunch of stuff, i controlled volume faders in the box.
but... it caught a lot of peoples attention. it worked.. it was fun..
just wanted to switch it up and try something new..
seriously its for FUN, what djing is supposed to be all about..

numark is the shit - opened for him last year when he was touring with his toy set.
the thing you have to realize, is that his toy set is only the last 20 minutes of his set - he rocks it (and I mean seriously rocks it) on the decks beforehand...
beast of a dj tho...
