ok, the problem im having is the output is too high to play a regular cd when i use SSL on a 2 channel mixer without selective input for the Phono Inputs. basically if i try to play a regular cd it plays at a volume that is to distored. i have the setup selector to line for my output selection. if i switch it to phono then the volume is again too high to play a regular cd. luckely i have had nothing but FLAWLESS nights out with my CDJ's and SSL, but i like to know i have a CD if i have to fall back on. any ideas, suggestions?

Just add an external (stereo) switch to select between SSL and CD player?

Maybe I don't understand you correct. You want to connect a normal CD player to a mixer that only has 1 phono and 1 line input a channel, together with SSL?

no. i want to be able to play a normal CD when im using my CDJ's and SSL. right now i can only use SSL if i have only CDJ's hooked up. i only use vinyl at one club i spin at so i use CDJ's 3 times a week and 1200's the other night. but i need to option of being able to play a regular CD. did htis help.

What you could do is split the CDJ output with a Y cable (it is line level so is not very sensitive) and connect one side of the split to the SSL box and the other side to a spare line input on the mixer. If there is no spare line input (or FX return) you will need to add a (passive) switch that selects a mixer line level input between SSL and the CD signal.

wow, so theres no other way do do it other than that. thats alot of work to just play a regular cd.

Couldn't you just insert the CD in your laptop and play it from there?

im talaking if it crashed, as in SSL or if i have to restart, or have a currupt file. anythign that causes it not to play. witht the vinyl you flip the switch and yoru good, well not with cd's. unless you have adjustable phono level selectors.

Get a RCA switch-adapter (works like an y-adapter, but with better quality).

I think nik39 means something like www.eScience.ca

second how will that help me? i need it to switch from one RCA to another. kind of like bypassing the SSL box i guess right?
bartaug

Yes, you need to bypass the SSL box with the switch and send the CD direct signal to the desk.

If so, your regular CDs will definitely be distorted, because the phono preamps are boosting the already line level signal of your CD players.

yeah see thats my problem Shaun, on my mixer, the one i use when i take my equipment, i can select Aux/Line or Phono level input for the phono side of the channels input. but on othe rmixers that arent capable of this im stuck. so in your expert opinion Shaun what should i do to be able to play a regular cd if restart is needed?

I know there are some mixers that are allowing you to switch from phono to line. Pretty handy, but I don't know about the other features and things on those.

9:05 PM 7 January 2005
lol, i know man i got those mixers. but im saying if i use cdjs at lets say Club X and they have a numark pro sm 1 mixer that only allows phone or line without a switch to change them. like channel 1 has phono and line, channel 2 has phono, line but no switch to change the configuration or setup of the level inputs.
dj synystr
9:10 PM 7 January 2005
not on some mixers, its only line and phono on most 2 channel mixers.

Well, you have a couple options (if anyone has anymore please chime in):
1. As Nik suggested, use a couple RCA switch-adapters (works like an y-adapter, but with better quality) on the line inputs of your mixer. This allows you to switch between which signal your mixer's line inputs receive.
2. Buy a pair of line to phono level converters (not so common). This option converts the line level thru signal (when using CD players) to a phono signal, allowing you to use the phono inputs of your two channel mixer.

ok great, thanks shaun it just took a while from the way i was explaining it i guess. one thing though. which do you suggest out of the 2.

#1 It will be the easiest to implement (meaning you'll be able to find the adapters easier). Although, one of the draw backs is that you'll have to manually switch the input selector on the RCA switch-adapters, but thats not too bad.

nah, not at all. to be honest when i use the CDJ's i dont use regular cds. i just need that as a fall back. you never know what could happen live. thanks shaun.

here is a tip.. if you need a line to phono adapter, get the FS CD adapter kit.
I have one... but i'm still debating sell my old FS Scratchamp or not

djtrackie, thats like $70 for the FS CD adapter... and then its Stanton quality. In other words, not worth it, IMHO.

lol you know i was thinking that, i sold my old FS but the cd adapter is only 50 bucks. lol @ Nik and then its Stanton quality. In other words, not worth it, IMHO.

Yeah, I know that, but that allowed you to use CDs with FS or something?
