I saw that on the Handbrake presets, it's set for 640x480, rather than the broadcast standard of 720x480. As most Promo Only and DVD materials are coming in at 720x480, doesn't it make sense to do a direct size copy over to mp4, rather than shrink and lose quality, then expand to fill widescreen TVs? I've been making the last 100 videos or so at 720, but I'm having some stability issues, VSL crashes once a night, even when I use task manager to shut down all other progs in memory. I have a barebones XP MCE installation on an Asus N81V Core2 DuoP8700@2.53ghz 3gb ram ATI Radeon 4650 1GB vid card 500GB HD. Running 1.9.1 with VSL 1.1. The crashes don't seem to ever reoccur on the same video, but 60% of the time it happens on the next video being loaded, the other times one is playing and I'm not loading/touching the other CDJ at all.
I should mention two things-
A) I have two different resolutions for vids, 640 / 720, AND not all vids are encoded at 29.97fps, but the majority are.
B) I used 4Easysoft to encode as Win Handbrake has no GUI until next release....
I'm going to work on this on my end too, see if i can spot anything in history with the vids used, I'll use GSpot to check the settings used which may be causing an issue. Anything I can do to help you give me some help here? My boss isn't happy when i get the crash dialog over the video....
Thanks in advance,
DVJ Rick Kraft

Hi pimp_my_dragon,
The screen resolution and fps rate shouldn't cause Video-SL to crash. It would be of great help if you could get us a crash dump, then we can try and see what is causing your crashes. There is an article on how to get this here -> www.serato.com (click link). If you can get a crash dump, please attach it to this thread :)

I'd like to say that since fixing my video framerates so that they are almost all 29.97, stability has increased dramatically. I found that vids encoded at 720x480 are rock solid if the framerates all match.
BTW, i found the main cause of crashes with my set, evidently 29.97 fps works just fine but 30fps (non-drop framecode) crashes about 50% percent of the time, seems to be much more likely after VSL's been running for a few hours. I had issues with "Jai Ho", every other time I played it, it crashed, causing me to use GSpot to analyze it and find it was running at 30.00 fps, something you might wanna know.
You can consider this to be resolved, and I'll keep the above method if I have any other problems, thanks for your support :D

no offense, i hope pimp my dragon is wrong and this issue isn't resolved...

Hey pimp_my_dragon,
As I said earlier the framerate won't cause crashes, my guess would be that something in the conversion has solved the problem. Are the converted files a different format?

no, both files are mp4, however the crashing file was obtained as a trade, i noticed with the Win program GSpot that the framerate was 30.00fps, that was the only difference I could make out. After I remade the file from scratch, no more issues, so possibly corrupt video data of some sort. I had another crash tonight, gonna have a look at those files also, see if the framerates are an issue...
Oh, and a crash while relocating lost files... actually that's happened a couple of times :( SSL seems like it won't find video files unless they remain -exactly- the same name, and even so, it's about 60% success, after a couple of times relocating it's about 80%. I tried changing folder names for ~250 video files the first time with that success rate, and also re-organizing the files in the folders (changing folders again) with about 180 videos yielded the same success rate.
Also!!! You MUST relocate your files BEFORE you drag a folder containing the orphaned files over to be a crate in SSL, otherwise you will pooch ALL your cues! Be warned!!! (I had a very bad night when I found that out....)

Oh, and a crash while relocating lost files...Are you still using Scratch Live 1.9.1? There was a bug where the Relocate Lost Files function would crash when it encountered audio files with a video file associated. This was fixed in 1.9.2, which you can get here -> www.serato.com (click link).

no, this crash is -with- 1.9.2. I had another one tonight while i was analyzing files and relocating lost files at the same time. I also don't have any audio files with video associated, i have videos, or audio, that's it, just fyi :)

If Scratch Live crashes while analyzing files it's usually due to an extremely corrupt file. If this happens again, as soon as the crash happens open Windows Explorer and go to My Music -> ScratchLIVE and open the OverviewBuilder.log file. The last file listed will be the one that Scratch Live crashed on - try removing that from your library and resuming the analyzing files process.
Analyzing files and relocating lost files at the same time will be incredibly taxing on your system. I'd recommend that you do one at a time if you can :)

That was because the serato web team was unhelpful in changing my username ;)
Since the original issue has been dealt with (the files were culprit in causing the crash) we can close this if you like.
